How a Katana Swordmaster Fights with a Naginata

Спорт

Asayama Ichiden Ryu has 15 Naginata Kata. But today, not even the headmaster, Seki Sensei, knows how to perform them, but only the documents are left. However, Seki Sensei has trained and watched many other Ryuha styles, so he will share his knowledge about the Naginata with us.
So today, Seki sensei, the 22nd headmaster of Kobudo Asayama Ichiden Ryu with 400 years of history, will explain more about the Naginata and introduce some fighting techniques. He will talk about how to win against a Naginata with a katana too, so please watch this video until the end. By the way, we have started a new online lesson on Sundays at 10:30 pm JST. Check out our Patreon page for more information!

    It's likely they are too vague to easily interpret. Often these were written so only insiders would understand them. Big systems might eventually get detailed manuals because they were so popular the secrets were just out, but smaller ones wanted to keep their secrets. The Liechtenauer system is a good example. Lots of manuals which are detailed, but without them the poem left by Liechtenauer himself would mean nothing. It's called Liechtenauer's Zettle if you want to look it up.

    While the Naginata is regarded as a distinctively Japanese weapon, other cultures had similar weapons, including European polearms, such as the Kuse, Glaive (both look like an oversized kitchen knife on a pole), and the Säbelhellebarde (small halberd head with a saber blade instead of a spike). The Chinese also went quite overboard with glaive-style weapons and created really big ones... There were also more cut-focussed straight blades, such as partisan, and schwertspiess (the latter is a shortsword mounted on a pole), and some that resemble the Jumonji Yari, such as Spetuum and some partisan. The latter seems to me far more popular in Europe, though not as popular as halberds, poleaxes, and bills, which all are more axelike and heftier weapons.

    I’ve always admired the Naginata, it’s such an exceptionally graceful weapon, perhaps one of the most graceful in any cultures’ martial arts traditions. I’m always a supporter of keeping alive - or recreating, where we must - the martial arts traditions of the past, so of course I would absolutely love to see the 15 techniques of your school practiced once again! I’m also a big fan of practicing the commonly used battlefield weapons such as the spear, along with the appropriate techniques - or the more rare duelling techniques, where they exist (such as all the amazingly crazy stuff in German legal duelling codes, such as the two-handed duelling shield), so this neatly encompasses both of my interests!

    This is very interesting, because most of what I have heard about the Naginata was in army formations, in which they fought side by side to take advantage of it's length, so they could only attack forwards. But in individual combat it's completely unique, similar to a Bo staff, but still unique.

    I think you are thinking of the Yari. The Naginata was mostly used by the Samurai in the Heian and Kamakura periods. After the Mongol Invasions the Naginata began to fall out of favour as battles became more about formations rather than groups of individuals fighting each other. The Yari, most famously in the Sengoku Period, was used in massive formations. It replaced the Naginata as the main melee weapon of the Samurai.

  • @edi9892

    @edi9892

    Ай бұрын

    I wouldn't recommend that weapon in formation, unless it was at the sides of a formation, similar to how many Zweihänder were used, including also Chinese and Japanese two-handed swords (basically when you get flanked and quickly need some skirmishers to save your main formation from breaking). I'd rather equip my troops with Jumonji Yari, or modify the naginata similar to the German Säbelhellebarde (basically a short saber blade with an additional small, blunt axehead and a small hook). Both weapons have two advantages over the Naginata: they can be used to push and pull, allowing for more effective use in tight spaces such as tight formations. Plus, you can whack helmets with the latter weapon without damaging the blade.

  • @greyvr4336

    @greyvr4336

    Naginata shouldn't hook as well as a bill or halberd, but they do have a large roundel just behind the blade like the one on a pole axe, except on a pole axe it's usually lower down and a push assist instead of a hook aid. It's not well modeled on these wooden ones, but it's there on many when assembled.

    When I was little, my brother who was four years older than me went to a kendo class on the rooftop floor of the police station in town from nursery school to about the third grade of primary school, and he always took me to watch his training, and in junior high and high school there was a kendo club and my classroom was next to the kendo club training hall in my first year of high school, so I miss these sounds of blows. My great-grandfather on my mother's side was the last samurai in the family, and he was a great-grandfather of the family. The ships of the US Navy and European merchants came to Japan chasing whales and suddenly appeared in Edo Bay, firing 100 blank shots into the city of Edo (now called Tokyo), which was already a big city at that time, and he was also a great-grandfather of the Emperor and Shogun (the one and only being and the highest authority in Japan). The Shogun was appointed by the Emperor to manage and govern the military, political and legal affairs of the country and was the sole and supreme authority in Japan.) In the time (only 170 years ago) when he landed in Japan without the permission of the Emperor and the Shogun (a shogun who was appointed by the Emperor to manage and govern the warriors), he started to map a large river flowing through Edo by using a survey boat, ignoring its Japanese name and giving it a new English name, his grandmother was a warrior and a member of the family order of the lord of a castle and priest in Kumamoto prefecture, Kyushu, and he was a member of the Naginata As the daughter of a samurai, my grandmother had learnt naginata from a young age and had many matches with warriors with katana, and she repeatedly recommended that I learn naginata. My great uncles, who worked hard to rebuild Kumamoto Castle after Japan was defeated by European countries and the US, who burnt 100 Japanese towns and villages, were all learning kendo. She often said that kendo and naginata were the source of spirituality from the point of view of the Japanese and her samurai family. However, I am not good at sports, so I chose to join the Literature Club and read a lot of classic Japanese literature. Now that I am older, looking back and thinking about it, I wish I had learnt kendo as well to carry on the tradition.

    ive always been facinated by the naginate since i see it brought up in fighting manga, but rarely even used in them, so it always came across as this mysterious weapon that was spoken of, but never actually shown. would love to learn more about it, and if possible, maybe a spear vs naginata demonstration to really see the difference in the weapons?

    I'd watch videos talking about the 15 kata. Especially I'd love a discussion about the scrolls. When they're from, where they're from, how the tradition didn't get passed down, a viewing of the scrolls, and various ways to interpret the scrolls.

    If it possible, is there something, how to defense against knifes? It would be great, If there are some Samurai technics. It would be great, if Sensei could show more of that. Because the knife is more a danger today as the sword.

    Definitely want to see the 15 kata. Recreating forms is a time-honored tradition in HEMA. Interestingly, in advanced Tendo Ryu kata, the Naginata-ka has an auxiliary weapon, kaiken, tanto, or wakizashi, in their obi when uchi-tachi get inside of the effective range (uchi-ma) of the naginata.

    What I enjoy most about this video series is seeing how similar many of the techniques are between the European arts and more familiar with and the Japanese. Yes, there are definitely differences partly due to weapon differences and partly due to other factors like clothing & how one can move in it. But for me its most interesting focusing on the similar ideas, philosophies & techniques.

    Thank you for your teaching! I'm studying at Katori Shinto Ryu, and naginata is my favorite weapon studied there, very tricky and powerful! Although there's no such hand switching in our katas, it's done mostly when you're preparing for attack. I would really like to watch theese naginata techiques, please!

    Really interesting video!! I used to watch the naginata practice session after fencing practice was over when I attended ToDai on exchange. I would really love to learn more about the naginata kata because the weapon and movement style is so graceful. One weapon that is extremely cool but I have no idea how to fight with is a kusarigama. I would also be very interested to hear Seki Sensei's thoughts on this kind of weapon.
