Rice weevils are smaller than even grains of rice, growing only to be as large as 3 to 4.6 millimeters in length. They have dark brown bodies, and you may even notice some lighter brown patches if you can see them up close enough. You can tell a weevil apart from other pests like a grain beetle because you’ll notice the weevil’s long snout. It’s hard to miss, even when they’re that small.
To confirm rice weevil activity, look in or around your pantry or where foodstuff is stored. You may see a few rice weevils wandering the shelves, but focus on finding the source of your infestation. Look inside bags or boxes of grains and other stored foods. Remember, since rice weevils spend their developmental stages within grains, you’ll only see adults during your inspection. Be sure to also check any cupboards, drawers, and shelving.
After identifying your pest and inspecting for activity on your property, it’s time to start treatment.
Before starting any treatment, be sure to wear your personal protective equipment, or PPE, and remember to keep all people and pets off the treated areas until dry.
Before starting your treatment, you need to clear out your pantry. Start by throwing out boxed and bagged foodstuffs. Next, vacuum all cracks and crevices in the pantry shelving or cabinets. If your shelving is adjustable, clean out the peg holes with a toothpick and vacuum. Rice weevils may be found in these tight spaces as they travel from place to place. Be sure to throw out the vacuum’s bag or clean the canister when you’re done. Then wipe down the pantry shelves with water to clean up any food residue. Do not use any strong cleaners or bleach, as these will keep pests away from the pesticides you’ll soon apply.
Once you’ve cleared and cleaned your pantry, you’ll need to use insecticide aerosols labeled for rice weevils like Pyrid and Novacide. Pyrid is an insecticide aerosol that’s often used as a flushing agent, and it’s great to treat tight cracks and crevices where rice weevils or other pests may be hiding. To use Pyrid as a crack and crevice treatment, just remove the white applicator, attach the provided red applicator, and make sure the straw is firmly affixed in the spout. Shake the can, and spray along the lengths of any cracks and crevices in your pantry where rice weevils could be hiding. Next, apply Novacide. Novacide is another insecticide aerosol, but this one contains an insect growth regulator, or IGR. Just shake the can, hold it upside-down, and spray 1-2 inches or product every couple of inches.

I have a lot of rice and took bags to the bathtub, stayed up for hours while my wife and son slept. every time they would come to the top and climb up to the top of the bag, i would tap the bag and have them fall into a container. When I had a bunch, I would tap it into the toilet and flush after a while. I did this for hours. I vacuumed and wiped-out cupboards and drawers, spent the following day throwing some food items and transferred good items to zip-lock bags. Instead of throwing out the rice though, I put it in a pot with a lid, into the oven at the suggested 180F for 15 minutes , I dunno which website wrote that info but still on my stove-top, with the lid still on, a weevil crawled up to the top of the rice. Well, I put it in at 300F for 30 minutes. I think because I had a large quantity of rice in my biggest pot, the heat didn't reach the center, the first time. I don't have a method for easily separating the dead weevils from the rice, there's so many, I just plan on rinsing them out as I use the rice. They are so small and seem like clean-ish and harmless bugs, compared to what I hear about cockroaches, dirty cockroaches who shi* everywhere. But here I am. a day after the big-clean. Woke up and killed 3 more rice weebles. I am not too worried, I killed hundreds the day before. Maybe thousands...

best thing to do with rice, flour and cereals and other grains is to freeze them for a few days sift them.then use o2 absorbers and vacuum seal them. bugs are in everything we eat so no sense in throwing the food away. anything you cook will kill whatever critter there is anyway.

First freeze it for a few days to kill weevils Then leave out for 3 days, the sudden warmth will make the eggs hatch The refreeze for another three days and that kill the hatched babies Then remove from freezer and let thaw for a few days Never ever pack with oxygen absorber until you know all moisture from freezer is out or else it will cause mold

If you have a deep freezer with space, keep it in the freezer. Scoop portions into a smaller container to use for a month or so at a time. I had an issue with them in a bag and everything I've scooped out of the freezer has been fine, they haven't come back from eggs or anything, I just have to wash before use. Future bags will spend some time in the freezer immediately before use to see if that does it without keeping them in it for good.

Adult rice weevils are capable of penetrating through food packaging and can invade through very small gaps in box folds. You can always inspect packages for any holes, and if a package is see-through, you can move the product around and see if there are any weevils inside. However if you're dealing with a large infestation we do recommend you throw away such packaged foods before you start cleaning/treatment in order to ensure total elimination.

I bought a 50lb bag of rice from an Asian market a couple of months ago and soon after we started a kitchen remodel and the rice just sat there until I noticed today that it’s infested with these and things and now they’re in everything… all the unopened pasta boxes too. I freaked out and dumped the entire pantry in the dumpster. I’m worried they’ll damage the furniture

Hi Justin, that's understandable. Weevils are safe to eat... just most people don't want to think about eating bugs in their rice! You can put the bag of a rice in a freezer overnight -- this will kill the weevils while leaving the rice unharmed. Then you can cook the rice normally if you want.

Note: Weevils are in many grain foods when you purchase them in the form of EGGS. If you destroy the EGGS before storing you won't have a problem with them in your packages if sealed properly. Some people put them in the freezer for at least 3 days. You might try to microwave about 2 pounds of dry goods (rice, beans ECT) at a time for about 20 or 30 seconds. I have done this but not enough time has past to see how well it works. My thinking is the EGGS get destroyed in the microwave. Has anyone else tried this microwave idea? .

My cats had a water fountain. I went to change out the water…I saw a ton floating inside by the filter! I also would find one floating in their water dish. I’ve found them hardened in my scented wax burner. I’ve found one crawling on my arm, in bed! I realized they had to be pantry bugs, when an hour ago…I saw hundreds in the pancake mix! Some still moving. My heebies have now been freaking jeebied! After researching, I am going to buy huge trash bags, throwing everything out that wasn’t properly sealed, wiping everything down with vinegar/lemon essential oil. A woman said she was saved once someone told her to do this: Sprinkle pepper, dried bay leaves, & cloves in pantry where food will be stored. She hasn’t had an issue since. I heard sprinkled cinnamon works for other bugs. I do have many items in sealed containers, but not everything. I am so creeped out just thinking about what I’ll see as I pull unsealed items out….I think I’ll refrain from being nosy/inspecting it & just toss it in the trash bag 😂

Not the best advice in this video. To throw out your entire pantry is absolutely insane, and do you really want to use chemicals where your store food? Yeah, yeah, it’s safe once it’s dry, or doesn’t cause harm to humans, but who’s telling you that? The chemical companies. When have they ever lied before? Anyway, what I’ve done in the past is move everything into thicker sealable bags. If weevils are in there, they now stay in there assuming it’s properly sealed. I’ll then take those bags and rotate them through my freezer for a few days, but when I pull them out, the bag stays sealed and the food stays inside. If there were weevils they are now dead and can be rinsed, washed or strained out. Now you don’t need to money out the window. Once everything is in bags pull everything out you pantry, clean, and spray surfaces with straight vinegar. Personally, I just let it dry on surfaces. To keep from having an issue again, anything new you buy put into a sealable bag and freeze for a few days and then move to pantry.
