If you’ve opened up a bag of flour or a box of cereal and seen disgusting bugs crawling around, then you’re not alone. These are pantry pests, or stored product pests, and they’re more common than you might think.
These are insects that will infest dry foods typically stored in boxes or bags. These are items like cereal, dry pasta, corn, flour, rice and other grains, spices, bird seed, and even dried fruit and dry pet food.
The most common pantry pests you will see are indian meal moths, grain beetles, and weevils.
To confirm pantry pest activity, look in or around your pantry or where foodstuff is stored. Having bugs in the kitchen is pretty common, so spotting a tiny bug crawling on your countertops is not enough; you really want to focus on the stored food. The best way to confirm activity is to look for the adult pantry pests themselves. So keep an eye out for moths flying in or around the pantry and bugs crawling around in stored food. Be sure to also check any cupboards, drawers, and shelving.
Once you have confirmed pantry pest activity, it’s time to begin treatment. The first thing you need to do is throw out the contaminated food. If one package is infested, it’s safe to assume they all are.
Vacuum all cracks and crevices in the pantry shelving or cabinets. If your shelving is adjustable, clean out the peg holes with a toothpick and vacuum.
Next, use Novacide aerosol. Novacide is an aerosol insecticide that is labeled to control common pantry pests like rice weevils, saw toothed grain beetles, and moths. You’re going to just spot treat the back and sides of the shelving where there might be cracks and crevices. Spot spray the shelving in quick bursts so a fine mist is applied.
Next, use a Pro Pest Pantry Moth and Beetle Trap. This is a ready to use, pesticide-free trap that uses a pheromone scented glue board to trap pantry pests. Simply remove the protecting paper from the pre-baited glue and fold the trap into a pyramid shape.
Place the trap on the pantry shelving where it won’t get smashed and will be left generally undisturbed. The trap’s pheromone bait will lure adult pantry pests to the trap where they will get stuck in the glue.
Finally, for stubborn pantry pests that slip by previous treatments, use Pyrid. This is an aerosol insecticide that is labeled for many pests and delivers a quick kill. Unlike Novacide, Pyrid does not leave any residual and is instead used as a knockdown spray. This can be applied as a direct or space spray to any pests that remain in the pantry.
Once you’ve finished treating your pantry, it’s time to start thinking about prevention. If you can, buy only about a week or two’s worth of food at a time. Pantries that hold foods for extended periods of time are more likely to see an infestation.
When buying dry foods at the grocery store, take a look at the packaging. If you see any holes, rips, tears, or other openings, like our bag of grains, don’t buy that package.
And when storing food, it is best to keep it in tight-fitting or sealed containers. Put cereals, rice, and flour in containers that can be air-sealed. Even plastic tupperware can help. This is especially true for dry pet food. Pet food and bird seed are often overlooked and extremely conducive for pantry pests, so put your pet’s food in containers.

I’ve had the exterminator here three times already to treat a drug store beetle infestation. I’ve lived in my house for 40 years, and never had any kind of insect problem, but here we are! I first noticed the bugs in April 2023, and bought some over the counter products, which did nothing at all. It is now September, and the infestation is just beginning to resolve. I emptied out the pantry months ago, and now see only about a dozen beetles per day. At one point, I had thousands per day, and I just wanted to move! Luckily, they haven’t spread past the pantry, perhaps a few in the kitchen. The exterminator said the problem was one of the worst he’s ever seen, and that it probably began a year ago without my noticing. He also said it could have come from flour, dog food, anything.

So we’ve been having really bad nats all over the kitchen. We looked into the pantry and there were literally small patches of eggs on our spices. I was so disgusted that I just threw everything out of my pantry. I wasted food but it’s better safe than sorry. I’m trying this method and I’m buying new foods. If you buy something that you won’t eat or leave it open JUST THROW IT AWAY.

I sprinkled salt all over in my silver ware drawer and I haven't seen any magots or mites in there since. I sprinkled cayenne pepper all along the carpet against the walls and I think it may have helped get rid of the cockroaches but I also give CBN monthly gifts, I'm a big believer in faithful Tithing and giving offerings. Tithe means giving the 10% of the income that belongs to the Lord. 😉👍🙏 I also sprinkle cinnamon on top of our fridge and in our cupboards it keeps the tiny brown mites away. It's messy but it works ,I got the idea from relatives they put cinnamon in the kids sand box to keep sand spiders out. One thing is that make sure to not let the pasta sit in the cupboard too long, we were still getting magots in the pasta boxes despite the cinnamon we sprinkled.

We've been having a moth issue in our pantry for some time, which I should have tackled earlier. Today I got to it and threw tons of food out, cleaned everything and vacuumed and I'm now in the process of clearing the shelving holes. Those sre an absolute nightmare, as I have about 100 of them and each one takes time to clear. I'm about 60% done and so far all but 2 were clean, with all the remaining having disgusting nests in them.

After our last infestation, we started storing rice and pasta in the freezer. They're never going on the shelf again because we can't be sure if they already have moths or eggs in them. They can also enter your house in dry dog and cat food or bird seed. If you store them in your house, keep them sealed up good. Our biggest infestation came from a box of dog bone treats we got at a tractor supply shop. We kept them in the kitchen for easy access for the pups. That was not a good idea. They got into everything.

Years ago i bought hamster grains and there was tiny reddish brown bugs in the bag. They started taking over my room because i kept the bag in a corner in my bedroom because i owned the hamster. They were also all over the cage harassing her and she was always scratching. I threw out the bag and washed the cage and they were gone. I didn't have to spray anything even when i bought new food there wasn't any more breeding. I hope we can get rid of those weevil grubs as easily..... This situation's worst in my opinion because the hamster food bag had beetles. I'm sure they had eggs and grubs in there but i didn't see anything other than adult insects, but now in my pantry there are these tiny maggot things with little legs and i can't deal with it because i have an extreme phobia of worms.

I would look for natural products, when my daughter had a spider infestation in an empty condo she used a mint spray so you just get a mint oil I had a health food store, and mix it with water and spray it anywhere or you think the bugs are. Most bugs hate mint. I have Eucalyptus oil so I’ve been using that and the weevils definitely don’t like it. But I have still not gotten rid of them. I’m wondering if boric acid will kill them. Since ants and other bugs can’t handle boric acid. The dollar stores have it and it’s cheap.

I freeze things if it's just a tiny bit or I am not sure. That way you don't have to throw everything out. Just make sure to find out how long you have to keep it frozen to completely kill it. I also try and freeze all the stuff that was near it because there could be eggs even just on the outside packaging. You have to choose which to start with. And it doesn't hurt to freeze things like rice and flour or crackers and especially dry pet foods when you first bring them home. Stay safe. Wash your hands and wear that mask.

If you see weevils in rice bags after some time storing them, don't throw away the rice unless its already moldy and smells bad. Just remove the rice from the contaminated bag and let it sunbathe for a day spread evenly on a flat surface (can be cloth, cardboards, tarp.) Weevils will get out of their own as they don't like heat exposure. Then repeat the next day/s if there are some left. After that store on an airtight container and your rice is usable again. Edit. You can sift the rice also before storing to remove the powdered rice the weevils ate to avoid molds, because it will suck moisture after some time.

I had an infestation of something in my flat a few years back. Tiny little bettles spotted crawling on the cielings, walls and the TV screen! The also congregated and or died in large numbers on the window sill for some reason. Found the main source fairly quickly, a box of museli opened and unused for years. I dumped all my dried food and used normal insecticide spray from the grocery store to fumigate all the surfaces and cupboards. Then cleaned them and restocked. I didn't get all of them, but the guys that remained only seem interested in eat holes through my stock cubes.... unfortunately I found evidence these guys followed me. That and I found a bag of spegehetti which had been eaten in half, but it was unopened, so arrived infested.

To avoid missing something, it's always suggested to throw away dried goods. If you decide, you can keep your food, but when in doubt throw it out. We like to go by the method of being thorough and want to make sure that we get any and all sources of infestation. Sometimes you don't see the eggs or a small infestation in a bag of rice, end up keeping it, now you have a problem all over again. So this video is designed to make sure we 100% eliminate the issue.
