How to Get More Hens When Incubating Eggs: The SR Quail Update 2-7-17

It always seems that you end up with 70% of your hatch being roosters. In this video I discuss some ideas and steps you can take to try and improve your odds and get more hens when incubating eggs.

    15 years ago I bred hedgehogs. One of the little secrets was that a female with a slightly more acidic body chemistry was more likely to have female babies, and a slightly more base female would have males. Females are more valuable there too, so you added a couple drops of vinegar to the water bottles for the females. No need to do it for the males, it didn't change anything. I lived in an area with very hard water (high base) and had a 20/80 female to male ratio. Started adding apple cider vinegar to the water and within 2 months it was a 60/40 F/M. Live litter size actually went up too (we think the high base was causing birth defects). No idea if it would work on birds too.

    It works with humans as well. The ph of the "environment" is better for X or Y depending on if its acidic or alkali (so you can douche with baking soda, or vinegar before conception to give one sex a better chance of reaching the goal.

    Good info , ive had only 2 quail hatches so far. First one didnt go well ( home built fridgabator that im still toying with and adjusting on ) and i only had 11 out of 48 hatch. 10 females 1 male. Second hatch i had a 50 % hatch rate and ended up with 27 males and 15 females. Those were all shipped eggs both times. Hoping to get to try out some of my own eggs soon if these birds get to breeding.

    Thanks for the info! Ran my first batch in my new incubator last spring, and it ran hot the whole time. I got 15 roosters and 3 hens out of it. About half the batch didn't hatch though, due to the temp issues I was having i think. I fixed one of the fans that was messed up and am trying again. It's keeping a solid lower temp this time. Hoping for more hens this go around.

Anyway, three plays later, we scored......

    I would think that the lower hen to rooster ratio would be easier to test in a breeding run. Meaning one rooster and only 2 or 3 hens in a pen. Otherwise how would you really know. And you would have to keep the eggs seperate in the incubator. I may have to try that this coming spring. I'll let you know if I do and the results

    For humans if a woman is more acidic in body pH they will tend to have more girls. pH also affects men's swimmers but opposite from what I've read. There were a lot of studies done for it and it was found to be true. So there are things humans can do to increase odds of having one gender over the other. I'm sure the same would apply for animals, though I dont know what pH would be for more female quail. What you're feeding could have good scientific basis for producing more of one gender than the other. 🙂

    I have 3 hens and 2 roosters, their first clutch resulted in 4 hens and 2 roosters. It's still too early to tell gender of their second clutch. If the incubation temperature theory holds true I expect more roosters as the heat made my incubator overheat in the afternoon.

  • @Slightlyrednecked

    @Slightlyrednecked

    6 жыл бұрын

    It seems like I always get more roosters than hens. And really the way the temperature works is that it doesn't change the gender of the bird, just keeps the other gender from hatching at all. I don't mind the extra roosters but I generally incubate a lot more eggs so they just become meat birds. Roosters taste the same as hens do so no big deal for me. :)

    I think you need to remake this video, because I found myself listening to the train and the bird more than you and having to go back over to get what you were saying. Sorry, it's a shame because you spoke well. Anyway, I wanted to say how interesting the information was. Last year I hatched 30 chickens using hens to brood. 7 were Roosters. All hens left some eggs that would have hatched in a day or so. I don't have an incubator so they died. I wonder if they would have been Roosters. I also feed yoghurt to my hens now and then. I keep a high'ish density of roosters because they are free roaming and need protection and I like a diversity of breeds in the flock. Some meat and some good egg layers. Probably not a lot of difference between chickens and quail? Thank you for all the information I intend breeding rabbits this year too.

I just lost 3-4 baby's due to low humidity and their shell dried out. i was helping this one out and using warm water to moisten up the shell. I got it out and lives for about an hour but died shortly after. as crazy as it sounds I have a little ER area set up for my birds for injures ect... I even made a oxygen unit with a battery operated fish pump tubing and a sewing thimble for the face mask. as crazy as this sounds Iv save a few birds and even brought back a baby duck that drowned in a bathtub. but never tried what I just did. the Quail was wet and very dead. I remembered the old touching a 9 volt on the tongue trick and thought what the heck. well the little thing is as crazy as it sounds alive and walking around in the brooder. any thoughts on this ? thanks for your time.
