Coturnix Quail Male to Female Ratio

You need to make sure that you don't have too many roosters in your flock but at the same time, if you don't have enough your egg fertility might suffer. So what is the correct ratio? In this video I get that all cleared up for you.

    Hi Chris, I have been enjoying watching your rabbit and quail videos. I started raising NZ/CA cross rabbits a few months ago and added quail 2 weeks ago. I made the mistake of feeding the quail late the other day and got my hand pecked a bunch. It didn’t hurt that much but I was surprised. I am keeping the feeder full now that I know what can happen if I don’t. I will probably be adding jumbo quail once I get used to incubating the eggs. Thank you for all the good info! Been loving your videos. Thank you for all the knowledge you share. I've only been raising quail for about 9 months now and I'm about to replace my breeders. What do you do with your older breeders? I've always been told that older birds are too tough to eat.

    Hi Chris, new follow. I've watched several of your videos today. Very informative! I can't have chickens so I think I'd like to get quail for the eggs first then maybe when I'm more comfortable for the meat as well. I would like to start small and keep them in the house so no worries about predators. How many do you recommend starting with for eggs only. There are 2 of us and we only eat eggs on average once a week.

    Hey Chris! Have you ever talked about keeping pests out of the hutch? I have a wasp problem, and I keep killing them, but they really like my quail hutch. Any thoughts?

    Longtime listener, first time caller… super helpful videos! Curious at your recommended covey size? We just hatched 46 and trying to plan the number of pens I’ll be needing to build this week. Thanks!

    It really depends more on the cage size. You can house them all together if you have a big enough cage. Just follow the 1 rooster for ever 5 to 6 hens rule and go as big as you want. I tend to keep them in groups of 20 or so myself and it works well.

    I have a cage about the same size as yours. I had 2 roosters and 7 hens. the other rooster wouldn't leave it alone. it will not let any other rooster live in there.

    I saw the video of the animal control coming out to your neighbor. To make your pens less noticeable from the street why not paint them forest green instead of white? My outbuildings are forest green so they blend into the scenery. It's hard to see them as they are next to green shrubs and trees.

    It might be a good idea to remove the male for a week and then reintroduce for about 3 days, and then repeat. They can stay fertile for up to 10 days after being bred.

    @@Slightlyrednecked thank you 👍 have few eggs incubating some are looking good. I actually didn't know they stayed fertile for a while after the male is removed.. learn something new now and then lol

    If we raise quail in the garage, will it smell?

  • @kelliwiemers6445

    They're very dusty. If you clean the bedding or poop tray regularly it shouldn't smell unless you have a whole lot in a small space. I think it's the dander and dust you may need to think about. I saw someone tape AC filters around a box fan and it seemed to do well at keeping the dust at bay. Just make sure it has good ventilation. I had a few quail in a building and they were fine as long as I kept the poop tray clean.

    How do you tell the sex of the birds before they reach sexual maturity

  • @Slightlyrednecked

    @Slightlyrednecked

    Жыл бұрын

    if they aren't feather sexable then you have to wait until they are mature. Jumbo browns like the onese i raise are feather sexable so you can tell the males form the females by the color of the feathers on their chest at about 3 weeks old.
