Would love to see much more mixing videos on this channel, like you did on your main 5-6 years ago.

His channel was a true hidden gem back then.
Rick's expression 6:07 , when the engineer is explaining the rack equipment. You better not mess up! 😎

Exactly what I was thinking lool, Ricks eyes look like they're holding a gun to GL'S head haha

I was thinking the same! When you say midrange what do you mean exactly? 👀 490 and 470Hz 😰

Hahaha!!!! Glad I wasn’t the only one who thought that 😂
Thank you for wrangling your friend in by making him explain the WHY! Great video as usual.
Thank you for showing us the sound of 25 years ago.
Rick please make more content like this. This is my favourite type of content from your channel. I know it may be a bit niche but this is killer. Keep up the great content
What a stunningly useful video, Rick! Whenever GL was falling into the common “a little bit of this and that, let’s move on” thing, the fact that you stopped to go deeper is where the gold really lies. Great job to both of course. And Greg!

We’re seeing Rick the taskmaster, but god damn, it made this a 100% more useful video than if he let GL just yadda yadda over the details!!

@@three3fitty573 Giving him the eagle eyes the whole time during the preamp part 😅
When you get Tom to explain the reasoning behind the decisions, that is so extra helpful, great way of lifting up these videos so it doesn't have so much calculus trigonometry class vibes.
I agree with many others, it‘s great to see you getting back into the control room. More videos on production techniques, recording and mixing would be appreciated.
Honestly - just listen to the room mics. 80% is Gregg's spectacular playing, 20% comes from the pro-grade, well tuned drumkit in a good room. Everything after that is just flavor, it's really hard to screw up such a good source.
I love how Rick is looking at the engineer as he is explaining things @ 6:56. It's the exact same look I give to my audio students when they're explaining something to others. That I'm ready to jump in if one little thing is incorrect or needs clarity look lol. A great teacher and musician.
Love the mixing context especially from someone with Rick's credentials and not trying to sell me the latest plugin or gear.
I still have the modern drummer from 1983 Alex Van Halen issue with greg's picture in an ad and he slightly bald. Yes He had hair work, and it lists him playing for the maynard ferguson jazz band. Then I remember him joining Dave's band and being like Wow that's the same dude!! He was a hell of a player then and he still one monster on the drums today!!
Love the simplicity of the mixing stage: shows how good of a sound you got on the way in. That’s the way!

Hey Rick Yes more recording videos please
Long time fan first time caller... A 'tape machine' plugin is great on basement recordings, I slap it on the master of everything.
I did use a little eq in my recording setup, but no compression at all. Only well-placed and balanced quality drum microphones.
I think a lot of people are looking to why their drum don't sound as good, as we see there is nothing very special done here, except we tend to underestimate a great sounding drum kit, tuned and setup well in a good sounding room, and with a great drummer hitting the drum, in my experience that makes 80% of the sound. Record it well of course is mandatory, which in my mind means "do not make mistakes" in placement, phase, mic choice etc.
I would be very interested in seeing more of this kind of content. I'm just starting to record at home and this was very informative. Thank you.
Being a mix engineer is largely about playing with tools to arrive at a goal. It's just tool after tool after tool. __ to add a little __, __ to add some __, etc etc etc. It's crazy how loaded a project can get. Sometimes I feel like I'm overdoing things, then I see videos like this and think "damn, maybe NOT ENOUGH actually.."
We were missing this mix vídeos rick!
I absolutely love a live room for drums! Concrete floor with concrete walls equals 💥!!!!!
"except for that compressor", lol. Yeah, that was a huge change! Can hear the tape emulator too but only because it's side by side.
Rick seemed a little annoyed and waiting to pounce when the other guy didn't give enough info haha. It's okay everyone has bad days or maybe Rick deals with this guy a lot and is aware how he is. Rick also knows to explain things in detail for youtube videos.

This guy is GL. We have been working together for 23 years and he’s part of my family. He’s been in many of my videos but isn’t used to explaining things on camera. It’s difficult if you’re not used to it.
An point almost always ignored is were to place the drum kit in the room - were does the kit and the room ( especially the low end ) interact best. Same actually goes for any other instrument. Moving the source by a feet can dramatically sound different and placing it in the right soot will ensure optimal response and then will require much less processing And its quite an easy task to fulfill
Please Rick, please please please make more videos like this!

This is phenomenal, Rick thank you.
Loved this style video - really great to see and hear effect and thought behind why its being applied.
This was so helpful, thank you so much. I am so happy man
That's how you do it (that +/- 470Hz dip you take out in multiple channels is basically a 'problem' frequency of that particular room and as I understand it might differ from room to room)
More of this, please!
awesome tips and gear
Looove to see the production videos back again!
This is great guys, highly appreciated!
Great, great video. Thank you for the pro tips
This was epic - well done.
The interaction of each individual involved colors the sound and the songs in a never ending churn, Rick is the personification of Art, as he demonstrates here without demonstration.
Lool Rick is such a teacher. "Yea but why are we doing that though??"
Wow! It's been a long time. Thank you!!!
Fantastic! More of this would incredible - thankyou
Wow! I learned so much from this video!
