One thing I don't think he mentioned, on top of challenging yourself by doing Iai Counter only hunts, just doing a hunt and standing around the monster dodging their attacks is a very good way for new players to adapt to them. This works for any weapon. Just start a hunt against a monster you're having particular trouble with and just dodge around their attacks, maybe poke them once or twice after certain attacks to begin gauging how big of an opening you have to do your stuff. Stagger them to see what their go to wake up move is, etc.. I really wish the Arena would allow a straight 1v1 brawl with a monster of your choice with nothing on the line as practice at all hunter ranks/village ranks. Personally, coming from World as a Hammer main, I spent roughly 30 hunts immediately after the tutorial in the Arena against Kulu Ya Ku with the longsword to try and learn how to counter and everything. Took a couple of hours but I eventually go to the point where you'd feel bad for the Kulu after awhile. While this did help with hunting other monsters, not being able to learn monster specific moves until I actually started a hunt for them, ended up resulting in me getting hit and even carted far too often. Even opted to use dual daggers instead, as the weapon requires very little brain power and allowed me to mash my way through the village quests in 2 days. (While still having to go to work, mind you.) So this video has been a big help, I'ma go home and just start iai countering my ass off till I get good. Or lose my sanity, have a midlife crisis then a mental breakdown and end up using the bow. Whichever comes first.

Definitely going to practice with these counters. I get greedy with attacks and go on the offensive too often with no regard to openings. Caveman brain says "OOGA DOOGA!" lol

Please note that I switched my RB and RT button and failed to mention it, sorry if anyone is confused. The first version I made of this is by far my most successful video, howewer I was never quite satisfied with it and also I learned some new stuff since then. @@RomanGuro I am just starting Rise and I don't remember LS being this finicky in World. But it's been a while since I played that one. I was trying to do the counters with NO quick sheath lol and failed hard. So will be farming monsters for the gear now. Thank you for pointing this out

Glad to see the unofficial part 2 for this technique! It really is something you have to feel and practice is always your friend with spirit counters. Magnamalo is such an excellent partner because of his varied move set and quick attacks. Tigrex is a close second because he has double counter windows with his charge and spin attacks. Great video as always dude! Would love to see you do a “Part 2” for barrel bomb tech specifically with the double wirebug attack!

Yeah, as the video mentioned Teostra and Valstrax are also great partners. Teostra has a lot of firebeams and explosions that can sometimes be quite difficult to get the timing correct (it's difficult to see where the hitbox is precisely, and also when). Valstrax, on the other hand, forces you to use loads of double and triple counters. Maybe even a quadruple counter when he's enraged

Coming from MHW as a CB main. Decided to go LS in MHR. After a few rounds with Maganamalo after watching this vid, I'm glad I made the switch. Subscribed!

As a beginner ls player in mhr your skill feels unreal man, thanks for the video that was super helpful!

I'm so happy I understand every bit of this and confident I know helm breaker and lvling up spirit guage etc yay

I also learned that you can put small barrel bomb to activate serene pose. Pretty neat trick as well. Especially powerful when monster is sleeping. 😁

I prefer my boys Tigrex and Rajang as training sacks. Tigrex pattern is really straightforward while Rajang is kinda tricky but fun. Practice with the Akuma Rajang, and you will be good in no time.

it's definitely something you have to feel because even if you watch attack by your eyes, you still need to wait when the monster cast it's attack against you, I mean, you need to wait, see and feel, sometime, you only need to feel ... Exemple, when you fight against Apex Rathalos or Apex Zinogre, their time to yelling when they are not yet enrage, take much more time, I mean their movement when they are trying to yell. You need to take this into account , and see their movement with you eyes and know which moment you have to counter slash it . Taking it into account is what I call the feeling, when monster in enraged, their yelling is more faster, so you have to quickly unsheathe your blade and slashing spirit the hell out of it...so yes , the feeling is very important+Observation(watching closely)+ alot practice are keys to master that Overpowered Spirit counter

While these chumps were waiting for the PC release. I have been studying the blade on a 6.2 inc screen. Mastering my inner weeb. Now that I got all of the frames in the world, I see mango's dive bomb from a mile away.

New to player a Monster Hunter game. Gunlance was my first pick, But didnt like the move set, I am sure it might change at higher levels. Then Insect Glaive that I love 🙂 I watch a youtube play Longsword and seeing him "dash" out of damage, I was thinking, Can i do that !!!! Find the weapon a bit strange, That for sure. Get this combo down and a few others, But my timing man. ha ha ha Well going to give it a bit more time, Hope i soon figurer it out 🙂 Thanks kindly.

So about quick sheathe, its extreme difficult to get level 3 quick sheathe in low rank making it annoying to build arround it, is ot still worth using reallt weak armor peices for quick sheathe or no.

it’s a skill called quick sheathe 3!

when i do the Iai Spriti Flash it does not show those white glowing around you like when you do it. did i miss something?

tbh, I didn't know that the double slash had I-frames (even when I have played Long Sword since the begining, alongside Insect Glaive) Guess there's something to be learn everyday

I believe it's called hyper-armour, not i-frames, as you take chip damage

Play with LS you need to control your anxiety . This man anxiety is 0, insane

im struggling to used it against monster im not familliar with, like magnamalo or mitzu, even zenoger, i alway fall on thier delay atack......ther are also my current spar mate, along with malzeno....

Also playing in switch lite , very hard to counter

I've literally tried everything now but for some reason, I can't get this to work. Not even against the dummy. .2 of a second is a rather big window but for god sake, I can't make it work what frames are you running when you play? edit: never mind... I'm just incredibly dumb and didn't know that only the spirit slash is a counter...

I do it manually, but many people like to target the monster (press in right joystick) and then hit L1 to focus camera on monster. Hope that helps.

I guess the best thing you can do is just observe... that means no attacking, just try to not get hit by anything. That way you will learn quickly about openings.

Honestly the biggest challenge isnt the timing its how to stop my hunter from doing a roll or zr attack and actually do the stupid sheath

The counter is mainly to higher your spirit level, not to deal damage.

They are a little bit easier compared to Iceborne yes.

I actually don't like Iai Counters, it makes speedruns look boring. Iai Counter has cost you a bug, the same as SnS counter for expl.

Countering in sunbreak is BS thats why I switch to SnS

In my experience there are two kinds of Longsword players. The inconsistent idiot that trips you every 3 seconds while attacking the head all in persuit of landing a helmbreaker. Or The actual man who has been practicing the blade that knows what a counter is and tries to land them as best as they can. Goes for the tail first, and feels bag if you stagger EVER. Now I know there is a third kind, and you sir - are that third kind.

theres also 2 types of mh players. the idiots who cant slot in a single flinch free and whine all the time. and the chads who slot in flinch free 1 and still out dps your ass.

@@user-xo2og8kv1o Yup. Flinch free has never been cheaper to slot. After that there is nothing a longsword player can do to you. The heavy weapons on the other hand can still put you in the air or on the ground.
