    I'm not sure if you can change citizenships just like that but you can get a residence permit based on remigration. Finland allows dual citizenships too.

    You don't need to "change citizenship", you can be both an American Citizen and a Finnish Citizen. I'm both a British Citizen and an Irish Citizen, I have both passports. I want to move to Finland, it's so beautiful. Luckily I have an EU passport so I won't need to apply for a visa or residency permit.

    Thanks for the video Aleksi, really informative stuff! I've been thinking about this haha. The language is quite a struggle for me! I don't live in Finland currently so I don't get much practice at all other than Skype calls, even reading a children's book is challenging for me. I'm not sure what else I can do to improve on it after reading From Start to Finnish! I still can't form a grammatically correct Finnish sentence half the time 😂

I know some countries, for example the USA can grant you citizenship if you have some military service in the US defense forces. Can a non Finn serve in the Finnish Defense Force and maybe use that to add to their citizenship application?

    Kiitoksia for this informative video! I guess I would have to wait 4 years since I have relatives in Finland. I heard that if your grandparents were born in Finland, you can get citizenship that way. But what if that was prior to independence? It shouldn’t make a difference because Finnish church records are so well kept.

    This one is the rarest and possibly not many people know about it. It is not written anywhere except in the application itself. You can get exempted from language requirement if your JOB requires Finnish citizenship, and there is no way around it. Basically if your employer proves that in order for you to perform your work duties, the citizenship is a must! Happens in very rare and distinct jobs but it is an option to select in the application and then ou can attach the letter of explanation.

    well, i think the way Finland looks at it is that IF you want to live there you need to prove that you will be a productive person in society there and can prove it, not like the USA where we just take anyone.

    My father (now passed) was born in Finland and was a dual (canadian) citizen at the time of his passing, I have relatives there, the family farm has been in the family for around 300 years. I would quite happily move to finland and give up my canadian citizenship to do so, with the state of this country these days I am very seriously wanting to look into it. Just wondering how those factors would play into the process...

    Finland allows dual citizenship. I coached an American moving to Finald who was in a similar situation. His grandparents were Finnish, and he had the documents proving that, so he was able to apply for a residence permit based on immigration. I'm happy to answer more questions if you have any. My mom is Finnish, my dad is Swedish and I'm born in Sweden. I read that I had to visit Finland after my 18 birthday to be a Finnish citizen (I might be wrong) but I haven't done that. I've only been to Finland (on short holidays) when I was around 4 years old. Somehow I've been getting the envelopes for both the Finnish and Swedish EU vote. Could I be a Finnish citizen without knowing it? And how can I vote from 2 countries in the same election? It sounds wrong and I did not take advantage of it, I only voted using the Swedish one.

  • @HakureiMikko

    @HakureiMikko

    If you received documents to vote for Finland i the EU elections I'm pretty certain that you are a citizen. You would have been granted citizenship upon birth through your mother's citizenship. Also, it seems you have not lost your Finnish citizenship at the age of 22 (by virtue of being a resident of a nordic country i.e. Sweden for at least seven years prior to turning 22). I suggest you contact the embassy for confirmation. I was thinking you would have had some confirmation by being called for military duty however, if I recall correctly those who carry dual citizenship are called in their country of residence. So, in the case of Sweden, not very likely. As a side note, back before 2003, those who acquired a foreign citizenship automatically lost the Finnish one. I just reclaimed mine recently. Fortunately, as a former citizen (formerly former?) I was able to do so by declaration. Cheers!
