How To Get Everyone In Focus In A Group Photo
Today we're talking about how to get everyone in focus in a group photo.
Getting everyone in focus in a group photo is something I get asked about ALL of the time, so let's break down how to do this.
There are three elements to insuring everyone in your group photo is in focus, those elements are Depth of field, Where you focus, and your lens, so let's do this!

    I’ve never made a comment on your videos but I need to now. Thank you. I started photography in 2015 and went crazy. Your manual video was what I saw before I even got my camera. I learned manual in a day. Within a few months I was selling work. I’ve sold to magazines, businesses and have been hired to shoot events, products, etc. I’ve taught at workshops and post production has become my forte. I’ll be in Seattle with Greg Benz and Nick Page next month. It’s guys like you that make this stuff all so simple for beginners and now just 4 years later I’m teaching people the deep topics of photography and just now starting to build video library here on KZread. Thanks man. Your work means a lot.

    With some forethought it can definitely be used in the field, and you can also estimate distances. It's not for everyone, and I totally understand that, but it's definitely usable in the field.

    It could be used in the field but not for a fast pace job like a wedding, you don't have time to faff with an app. You need to be going in to that knowing what you need from experience... which ultimately is where everyone should end up in time ergo not needing the app.

    Especially if you haven't studied photography. I can see where you may be confused by what I believe is a simple and easy app. For example I'm shooting a very large group tomorrow (40-80 people) on an elevated platform inside a church. I have opted for my L series lens at 28mm at around 15 feet from my nearest subject and found today (with my strobes and large umbrellas) I can get a nice exposure at F9.5. That gives me only 2.34 meters in front to play with or 7.67 ft (which is plenty) with an infinite depth of field behind. Easy peasy.

    Great video, one the hardest thing I seen for people new to depth of field is remembering to focus on a center half way point of the area you want your everything in focus. They forget on put the focus point where they want the focus to start and mess up thinking they need a bigger DOF.

    What if you use autofocus, you can see on the camera what's being seen as in focus?

  • @spyrosheniadis

    @spyrosheniadis

    5 жыл бұрын

    Yes and no. First, when you're focusing, the camera actually has the aperture open to its largest size so that it can "see" what it is focusing on, and so you can see the scene in the viewfinder. So when you're focusing and you look through the viewfinder, you're not getting an accurate visual of what will or will not be in focus in the actual photo. Despite that, you can still get an idea of what will be in focus through the viewfinder, but even that isn't perfect. To do that, you have to use the Depth of Field Preview Button. Most cameras have one. What you do is focus on your subject, and then press the button, which closes the aperture down to the setting you have for the photo, and you get a preview of what the depth of field will look like (hence the name of the button). Be aware of two things when using this: 1. The viewfinder will get darker, because the aperture closes down to the setting you are using for the photo, and it may make it difficult for you to see, which may make it hard to determine if the depth of field is adequate 2. The preview isn't perfect, and so you should still verify it with a test photo that you check to make absolutely sure everyone you want in focus will be in focus.
