My sweet dad, now gone 14 years, taught me basic electrics and plumbing. The rest I’ve taught myself with books, KZread videos, and watching/helping others work. Half the battle is having access to proper tools and safety gear. The hardest thing I’ve ever encountered was moving heavy drywall. I draw the line at that now that I’m a senior. I also draw the line at huge power tools: bandsaws, chainsaws, etc. Today I’m installing a new kitchen faucet.

I love that you did this video. I also taught myself how to use tools originally because I couldn’t afford to pay tradesman when I bought my first house. That first year I had to repair a roof, plumbing, broken water heater, tiling, window glazing. That was the year I made the wonkiest ugly birdhouse ever, but my birds didn’t mind it. I was so proud of what I did and continue to take on these challenges alone. ❤

I definitely agree with you 1000%👍 when you said, "Who cares if it's not perfect? It's unique!" 😊 Grew up DIY-ing due to frugal (leaning on the stingy side) parents even if they can afford. I used to feel unfortunate about it, but aging made me realized that it was truly a blessing. It enabled me to always create something out from seemingly nothing.

50 years ago I took a woodworking class at the local high school at night I loved every minute. Safety was the first thing we were taught for each tool and machine. I made several pieces of furniture which I still have. Now that I'm cleaning out my house I have lots of tools and many duplicates which I will donate. It is so satisfying to accomplish a project with your own hands! Benita, I so relate to this video and enjoy your practical solutions! Wish I was there to help! Continued good luck.

I love this! My dad was a carpenter. I was the only daughter with 3 brothers. My dad always let my brothers help with projects but never invited me. When I was 16, he was removing an old fireplace and brick wall. I asked if I could help, and he laughed at the idea. Then he went to the hardware store, and while he was gone, I grabbed a rubber mallot and took the whole wall down by myself. He couldn't believe his eyes when he got home and saw the bricks on the floor.

I love this video! I’ve been a “tool woman” for about 45 years. I also watched my mother use tools. My favorite place as a kid was a hardware store. I am fortunate to have a handy, supportive spouse who encouraged me and was my boss in his electrical firm for 10 years. No one is born with these skills; not even guys. And they are not universally gifted. I would have loved seeing this in my twenties. Don’t let negative beliefs keep you from the satisfaction and empowerment DIY can give. Is there frustration? You bet! But, oh, when you persevere? No greater feeling of accomplishment! If Ana White can do it, so can you.

🪚Just a great, individual, video topic Benita, beautifully filmed and explained. It's a great tip to share or barter tools, saves money and storage! 🛠️A lot comes down to confidence, and seeking out information built up over time...covers so much in life ☺️ I'm part way through building a 📚case, it's not too hard. Also a shout out to the local tool library. I don't know that every country has them but in my local regional centre, about 20 minutes from my town, we have a tool library where people donate tools they no longer use, and some have been specially purchased at trade prices or donated. For a reasonable annual fee you can borrow almost anything you might ever need. Much cheaper that tool hire, but that is also an option for one off projects.

My father was a contractor & master carpenter, and he made sure I not only knew how to use basic hand tools but took me to a hardware store to help chose ones that would fit my hands and strength level (very important). I was always following him around our small farm watching him do projects & he never said “only boys do that”. Took me & my brother up on the roof of a pole barn he was building & taught us to hammer nails to put the shingles on-every project was a learning experience, and I have always been grateful for the time he spent to make me more independent. Still, I marvel at your skill level & attention to detail on all the projects you get up to! Please Everyone do wear Hearing, Eye, and Hand protection, especially when operating power tools--safety is Paramount.

I learned DIY from my Dad and the first thing I bought in 1980 when I got married was a tool box 🙂 I used it a lot, so did my husband, and I enjoyed this so much! Putting us shelves and frames with artwork, fixing things etc was fun and so economical, perfect as we started our new life with a small budget. But the best of it all was the pleasure of enjoying our creations 🥰 Fast forward 44 years later, the tool box had to be replaced at some point but a lot of the tools are still with us!💞 I agree 100% that DIY is not just for men, and we taught our daughter and son the sameskills, as well as painting. Thank you for this wonderful and very useful video!

Lots of people start something and then give up because they lack skill and knowledge around DIY projects, and they don't think they have the aptitude to do it. But they do. They really do. It's important to do it again and again and learn as you go and not give up. Skill is acquired bit by bit, by doing, by failing, and by doing again, no matter how simple or complicated the project. Kudos Benita!!❤

I had a construction company yet learned so much of trades that weren’t mine. None of my boyfriends could do DIY so I did it all. It’s nice to see women doing this type of renovation but I will say there is a huge difference between a competent DIY enthusiast and a skilled tradesperson. My brother is a furniture maker and the sheer amount of tools he has is incredible. Yet he looks at a misshapen corner and can cut a perfect shelf with just that look and his handsaw. PS - don’t forget respiratory safety wear too and always be mindful of asbestos when renovating older buildings.

You know I’ve always love to see your DIY, so inspiring. I had learned the minimal basics from my brother when he used to live in the same city, then I had hired a contractor for renovation after my divorce, learned some from him as well. Now I’ve just moved after 23 years to a new place, wanting to change many things in here (all the cabinet handles) and putting up heavy mirrors and etc. Nothing major since it’s an apartment, but I always crave for more knowledge of DIY. Thank you Benita for this video, the washing station turned out so functional and lovely!!!

Another lovely and inspiring video, thank you (tack så jättemycket). We became homeowners last summer in southern Sweden, an 80s timemachine pretty much. So we are working on the learning to do everything together. I am moistly scared of the noise and my bad eyesight, but so far I've mastered cutting hedges and branches with powertools (that's new for me as an old apartment girl). It's such a great feeling after when you mange to do things on your own, as you say don't have to be perfect first time.

Fantastic video, Benita! I find that my hesitance to DIY is a mental hangup - my mom and dad were extremely handy and built our house together, but for some reason I've always felt like I am not good at *crafty* things - even as a kid I had problems with Legos, and as an adult I struggled putting together Ikea furniture - it's like I can't visualize how things are put together. Last week my husband and I were stacking wood and his pile was perfectly square and mine looked like a "Pinterest Fail." I think a class is a great idea, as well as asking tradespeople who work on our house if I can tag along and see how they do projects.

Love watching you get all the machines out, Benita. I've got an antique email blue washing station, just like yours. Still works fine outside in my garden. As the daughter of a math man and a stepfather with a building firm, I was expected to do all. Like driving the big company trucks, parking was my fun at the end of a school day. I can assure you that handling tools was a plus in my job. The tools are way fancier though 😉my late HB had two left hands, so of course I did all.

@spoly8139 Since I was left alone, I’ve realised I can do a lot more than I thought I could. It’s given me confidence. My first jobs were building ikea furniture! I’ve now plastered walls. Decorated. Removed shelves. Filled holes and sanded. It’s not always perfect and I still get overwhelmed, but the feeling when I’ve done it is amazing! I cleaned my pond out today. It took hours. I was sceptical I could do it alone, but I did. Just start small and you will grow in confidence. And do you know what….if you get half way through and need help then that’s okay too. I’ve rang my dad numerous times because I’ve got in over my head. He always tells me I did well to try. Good luck to you.😊
