How to get clean metal
The last video we had removed all the paint but there was still rust on the hood and front fenders. Today Mark removed the naval jelly from the hood and fenders with a putty knife, used concrete and metal prep from Klean Strip to scrub the remnants from the naval jelly. This also helps remove and surface rust we weren't able to scrape off. Now we also had a guest at the shop who brought in a grill that had a lot of rust and some serious pitting that naval jelly just won't remove. For something like that you would probably want to dip but the better option would be just to remake the whole thing.
Hopefully the next video we start tackling the rust from underneath the Cadillac.

I tried some naval jelly back when I was a young man on some wheels. I didn't care about the chrome, I just wanted the rust gone and it did the trick. Also it didn't hurt the chrome, so that was a plus. I would use it again and recommend it to anyone for removing the rust. Thanks for the info and I enjoyed the show. Ronnie.

I have seen blasting go right and also go very wrong for sheet metal. The most important factor is the operator and their experience, with the various types of media available it is possible to get good results bug never a guarantee. Luckily there is a commercial dip tank somewhat local to me. One interesting thing that I would love some experience with are the new laser forms of rust removal. Wray, I am not sure if you have seen them yet, but the physics behind it is very clever. I haven't seen it firsthand so I cannot vouch for it's effectiveness. I hope to someday get your classes completed, I have plans to someday do a 1956 Maserati A6g 2000 (the Zagato coachworks) with all modern suspension and drivetrain. keep up the good work Wray, I always look forward to new videos.

For parts like the grill shell you mentioned, I have built a frame around the part, and put sheets of painter's plastic inside the frame in a way where it will not be punctured. Then pour hot water and oxalic acid (available in 5 pound bags for under $20). Stir it up and lay the part in the mix, brushing it every so often. After a day or so, it should be fairly clean.

The point was the damage was already there. After removing the rust you would have to fill each tine segment of the grille and sand them to perfection. It would be far easier with better results to make new and better ones.

I tried naval jelly when I got my first car 39 years ago because my brother in law told me to use it to remove rust. I guess I was too impatient and expected faster results. Ended up sanding and grinding it but that left a rough surface that took a lot of fill primer to smooth it all out again

If you put plastic sheet over the naval jelly or paint stripper while it's still wet, it will keep it from drying quickly and yield better results.

When sand blasting its not heat it's pressure that wrecks the panel , my small blaster was running on 125 cfm compressor and i have never felt one bit of heat it's instantly cooling with the air , but i have seen a flat bonnet destroyed with just air from a 250 cfm compressor he never even got abrasive onto the panel , all that pressure through a 1/2" nozzle does the damage

Great video Wray! I am wondering if the navel jelly gets trapped/seeps under the chrome trim up at the base of the windshield? Will it do any damage in the inside window channel? Can’t wait to see this project move forward. Thanks. 👍

You can use Baking soda to neutralize the phosphoric acid.

Instead of sand blasting and potential deformation of panels, what about other media like walnut shells or glass bead? I was able to buy a gallon of phosphoric acid and brush it on. The resulting black compound is iron phosphate, i believe. The automotive paint stores sell phosphoric acid but it is so dilute as to be worthless. You can probably buy it off of the internet.

Can you give us an idea of what type of pitting is acceptable to leave and what needs to be replaced? I can dig out the rust out of some pits but I am afraid to leave it. What do you recommend, if the metal is still strong can I leave it if I remove all the rust with the navel jelly and phosphoric acid?

If the rust craters are real deep, you will need to fill them. Any deep imperfection in the skin of the sheet metal can come back and haunt you later. The paint will shrink in the very hot sun and the imperfections can start to show. Best to change out the sheet metal that is pitted severely.

How do you assess for hidden rust as in unit-body cars like older Alfas.? The approach is different than separate body chassis cars like the Cadillac.

To properly restore and remove rust from a unibody collector car you have to dip the whole car structure or continuous spray with Rust 911, After cleaning all of the rust out the bad spots will reveal themselves. Sandblasting a unibody collector car should be made a crime. Stay tuned!

Just curious why use this method of stripping. I have stripped cars before and I have come across a system called dustless blasting. It uses a glass media and water and works really fast. I have a few cars I need to strip. The system is kinda of expensive though.

Wray, I may have missed it somewhere but what did you use to clean up and neutralize the phosphoric acid and naval jelly before putting a primer on the panels? Thanks, Tom

After all metal work is completed, you can wash the panels down with mild soap and water dry real fast ( I use a heat gun on large panels) I use a rosebud on my torch for large panels, keep it far away from the panel. Follow up with scotch brite. Epoxy primer will stick to butter.

I have been told that if you lay clingwrap/ceramwrap over the area you have applied navel jelly to, that it helps speed up the process. Have you tried/experienced this?

  • @proshaper

I have tried the saran wrap technique, I don't think it makes any difference. Each application only removes so much rust. On tough spots you might need five or six applications. It is a super easy process and the results speak for themselves.

This is good to keep it wet if you are working on it outside. I did mine outside, did it at 9pm and woke up to it and it was sunny outside. I feel like the wrap kept it wet and working longer.

1:30 no skill is involved but patience and attention to detail sure is. Those are increasingly rare skills these days, especially young folks, who can't seem to stay on a simple task for more than 5 contiguous minutes at a time before checking their phones.
