Excellent advice. Exactly what I constantly struggle with. My son is an accomplished guitarist and he gave me good advice. “Sometimes you’re done with a song. Move on to the next song.” In other words perfection is a high bar. The thing is…after i have left that song alone for a while I come back and I play it better. Good advice.

My challenge is picking notes with speed and accuracy. So it’s the technical and mechanical skills.

First off, i am left handed. It has taken me almost 3 years to gain enough coordination in my right hand to pick/ strum simple songs but im slowly getting it. Oddly enough I can fingerpick better than i can strum.

Great advice again Kevin, one point you made that I use all the time is recording your progress, that I do about every 10 days or no longer that 2 weeks, I found that frequency gave me two things. 1.. it was a commitment I made to myself, this commitment then acted as a motivator to practice daily because I couldn’t wait to hear my improvements and if I didn’t practice boy that was disappointing. So that motivated me to put more effort. And 2.. this frequency keeps your journey moving along at a nice pace, suddenly after 6 months it’s amazing how you improve, also playing a tune after 6 months and then listening to that exact tune you recorded 6 months prior will blow you away you will definitely hear incredible improvements. Thank you Kevin I really enjoy your style.

Thanks for this encouragement! About seven months in and often get a bit discouraged about changing chord speed or strumming going off track. But I have come so far also, I can "solo" and have fun just riffing. But definitely need make a roadmap for the new year.

Well Said Kevin. You have really helped me so far. Not only your lessons, but the way you explain things with patience. This is sage advice I wish i could have absorbed a couple years ago. I am trying to finish my first song, while recording myself. So hard....... I am very good at so many things, but not this. This is quite a challenge. TY for encouragement.

When you take your first step you are on the way to becoming a marathon runner. When you play your first note you are a guitarist. The question to ask yourself is how far along the journey you want to take yourself.

I have been teaching myself how to play guitar. As you so rightfully state, it is about mindset and and loads of patience. In the beginning you feel as if you are not progressing, but as time goes by, with practice and working on certain areas, as timing strumming etc. I normally take a break and drink a cup of coffee and then back to the guitar. Through your videos and advice, I have progressed to point whereby I sound and play much . Practice makes perfect, although at times you want to bang your head against the wall, but persevere and tell yourself "I will get there"...Thank you for your effort and advice. It is really appreciated.

Interesting and helpful. My struggle with the guitar has to do with having played years ago and picking it back up......things I used to do without issues are now borderline impossible. I picked up the guitar in high school in the 60's.......then marriage, children, and now well into retirement (age 79) I have recently picked up the guitar. Chords that were easy to navigate and picking patterns that are in my head - are not in my fingers. For the last three months I have been spending a hour a day moving from chord to chord with various picking patterns I see improvement but is happens slowly ........advice - keep practicing changing from chord to chord and different strumming and picking patters. I do not try to play songs. as it would be a train wreck at this stage. That will come. So, at age 79 with arthritis in my hands .... I am giving it all I have and to be sure, some of the fun is in the journey, at least for me!

I learned bluegrass banjo in my youth. In my 20’s I tried guitar but got frustrated with the size of the fretboard compared to 5 string banjo. Also, fingerpicking never let me develop a strumming hand so I gave up. I’m 62 and trying again, you’re helping me in the reboot.

Thanks for the great videos, Kevin. I'm 75 years old and two months into learning guitar. Your instruction is very helpful. I've stumbled on a cool song by The Band, "Evangeline". It's in 3/4 time with fairly easy chords , although I suck right now I'm slowly making progress. An instructional video on this song would be great when you get a chance. Thanks

Kevin I’ve been playing guitar now for about 8yrs. Sometimes I play ok And sometimes I play bad. I make one mistake after another which becomes frustrating. How long have you been playing and do you ever experience this and if so, how do you get past it? Bob

Hi Bob. Absolutely I do. It is ok to take a short break. Then come back to it. When this happens I am usually rushing things. I have been playing since i was 15. But after college didn’t play much. But have been playing everyday now for the past 9 years or so.
