How to Get Accepted to the JET Program ✨APPLICATION ADVICE ✨

In this video I'll go through the American application for the 2021 JET Program intake and give you some advice on filling it out and answering some questions along the way!
I intend this to be a multipart series. I'll be following up with a video on the Statement of Purpose next, so subscribe to catch it when it comes out to up your chances of getting accepted to the JET Program in any year (the application hardly changes)!
Thanks for watching!

    TBH if you answer anime to any of these questions that isn't specifically the act of creating it on a professional level then this isn't the job for you. Japan is not anime paradise. In fact it's quite the opposite. Otaku, is not an endearing term. You will not make it a full year. Do this job only if you enjoy teaching or want to do something new and can handle change and culture shock.

    Hi Allison, thank you so much for making these they help so much! I graduate next December and I plan on applying next fall. My biggest worry though is that I don’t really have much work experience, I wanted to know your opinion on how much that might affect my application and whether I should focus on other parts of the application or fleshing that out when I do start filling. Thank you!

    I'm teaching myself japanese right now (using the japanese from zero books) but do you think taking official college courses in japanese will look better on the application? There are web classes that I can enroll in but I'm wondering if it's really worth it? Does that matter to JET? Or if I can teach myself a considerable amount of japanese will that look just as good?

  • @AllisoninTokyo

    College courses may look a bit better, but I wouldn’t go out of my way to take them if you don’t want to! Personally I like college classes for the structure, but if you’re able to self-study then it will probably work out fine! I know plenty of people who never studied any Japanese before coming over. They do ask your self study hours, and at the interview they’ll test your skills. Honestly as long as you can introduce yourself they’ll give you a point I think 😂

    Hi Allison! Thank you so much for making this video! I am applying for JET 2022. What if I am not proficient in the Japanese language yet? Would it reflect poorly on my application?

    Just curious, I'm planning on completing coaching qualifications for football/soccer before I go, will having these qualifications make my application stand out? I'm hoping if I get in I can help with football clubs at schools or in the community :)

    Hi Allison, Thank you for a great video! Just one question, regarding the TEFL/TESOL certificates do you think that having one would significantly strengthen my application? Thanks.

  • @AllisoninTokyo

    @AllisoninTokyo

    It will definitely strengthen it! If you think you're lacking in other areas then it may be a good idea to get it. If you're thinking of teaching outside of JET one day then it would definitely be worth getting!

    Hi Allison! I'm currently filling out my application for Jet 2022 and I have a question regarding the interests/hobbies/sports section, can I put simple activities such as reading and hiking? Also, what if i dont have any honors or awards would that reflect poorly on my application?

  • @AllisoninTokyo

    @AllisoninTokyo

    Yes, that's what they expect!! Simply things are fine, just to show you have interests 😂 and no, I feel most people don't really have awards in college anyways, so I think you will be fine!

    Hi Allison, I am half Japanese but born and raised in USA and have a little knowledge of Japanese culture and am self teaching myself Japanese but I have heard that JET wants non Asian people to help spread their culture. Would you think it hinders or helps to mention you are half Japanese?

  • @AllisoninTokyo

    Hi! It definitely helps, especially if you talk about how you want to connect with your roots more (or something). I know tons of people of Asian descent and several half-Japanese people on JET! It really won't hinder you at all!!
