    It’s all in the process and the finish will take care of itself. So that’s what I keep telling myself anyway. I’m still learning patience in sharpening.

    There's no knowledge like that acheived through perserverance and dedious trial and error. You are now a craftsman. You helped me come to my senses by realizing Venev stones are almost as beautiful as your finished edges. Now my trial and error begins.

    Oh yeah . Laying an edge back below 18 degrees can get crazy tedious . Before I dived into precision sharpening just getting them sharp was never a problem . Making them look great and keeping an even bevel requires a certain skill set and practice . This is a whole different kind of sharpening here but anyone interested in learning the skill can learn everything right here . That turned out beautiful 👍

    Thank you so much for the insight and thorough explanation of the process. My only question is do you get your burr from single passes on each side and flipping or do you do multiple passes and then deburr?

    You’re welcome! Start off with working each side for many passes before flipping and just watch for the sharpie to be removed. I remark the edge with sharpie frequently so there’s no question about where the stone is hitting and if I have fully reprofiled and apexed the edge!

    What you need to know is that with the rear clamp spring adjusted so tight it will wear out your clamp backplate and solid bearing. I had that happen over and over again. At a certain point KME stopped sending me a replacement plate and no longer responded.. So just know that little detail. I bought another KME and have not had an issue with this new one.

    @@BLADESANDFADESOFFICIAL I did the same, it still wore the plate eventually to a point wobble and play was a problem. From what they told me, the little balls are hardened, the plates are not. I kind of get that, but why they don't offer those plates for sale is a mystery. The other wear item is the little plastic bushing between the spring and angle body. That over time also will wear and introduces its version of play. KME told me the least amount of pressure on the spring you could bear is best. I can see where you are coming from, but obviously KME doesn't expect us to put the thing through a whole lot. I love my KME but also realize it has to be handled sort of delicately when it comes to those parts.

    @robertw2042 ive spoke with them before and replaced it once. I know it’s a thing but I need things tight to get the precision I like. I also oil the detent balls and that helps but when I say “relieve pressure” I mean completely so it’s not rubbing at all and I haven’t had it wear out again. The owner said they make it like that intentionally so the larger part doesn’t have to be replaced and that it’s normal for that part to wear. They have a lifetime guarantee and have never questioned anytime I requested replacement parts. As long as you aren’t requesting parts every week or month, I don’t think they will give you any trouble. If they do contact Brian Spalding “their customer service rep” and tell him I referred you and he’ll take care of you. I do things the way they work for me and I don’t settle on any method without trying everything first. That’s the same thing I suggest to everyone else when it comes to sharpening!

    Why does that remove metal so fast? My TSprof with Venev stones do not sharpen that fast.

    The tear drop shaped one works good but I think I like the red one that I got as a kit from Erick Stiteler with the other knobs better!

    Thanks a lot for the tips and awesome job. I see a lot of guys going to 600, 1200 etc. Do you always go to 400 and just strop? Your way is obviously the best because your edge looks perfect. Really appreciate the video and knowledge

    Thanks brother and the “F” rating scale is different than the standard grit rating. F400 is equivalent to 1000 grit approximately. Its a finer scratch pattern than diamond plates because its a much better quality abrasive. The diamonds are bonded in a hard resin binder. Then the gunny juice does a excellent job polishing the rest of the way with just a couple passes!

    @@BLADESANDFADESOFFICIALthanks Sean, really digging your vids man. I've had my KME for a year and only sharpened 5 or 6 knives but nothing over 600 grit. After watching your vids, I want to go for a mirror edge on my next one. Probably try it out on a beater knife first, just in case I eff it up lol. Is there a certain angle you would recommend if you were going for a mirror edge and hair whittling sharp ?

    The way I clamped it gave me 17 at the heel and 18 at the tip which was to try to keep the edge bevel more even looking!

    I just ordered the KF-D4 and KF-Base with this set up can I achieve a mirror polish,or will I need to buy extra diamond hones?

    If you go to my sharpening playlist, I have videos showing several different ways you can go about achieving a mirror polish. You can get close with the basic kit after some practice and persistence but ultimately you’ll need something else. Lots of routes you can go after the KME Gold Series Diamond Plates that all work great and I have videos/ tutorials of all of them. My personal favorite route is simply stropping on basswood with gunny juice diamond emulsion so maybe start with checking out those videos and then second would be CGSW Resin Bonded diamond stones (10&5 micron)!!

    Are you still using the dawn soap and water on the diamond stones or just water? The H20 bottle is too funny. Ive been trying to find a stone update on what brand you've been using. You do a good job. It's cool to watch you how you've improved over the years. I know you said you were using cow hide and gunny juice I believe most recently....But I'm not sure if that's you're new preferred method....Next sharpening update let us know what you're using now and all your new findings again :D Stones, micron emulsion progression , ect....Let us know if you're using honing oil, something or another. It's all too interesting. Anyways, It's cool to watch the journey and watch you learn new techniques..... Thanks for all the videos. I do appreciate it.

    Thank you for all the kind words!! I go over my favorite progression in the video I just uploaded! And I’ve been using oil instead of water more recently. Its messy but it doesn’t dry up and you don’t have to worry about corrosion! Basic mineral oil or any oil will do the job!

    No Thats from previous sharpening trying to sharpen blades with short grinds with the standard clamp. Has to do with how close to the clamp the apex is and the angle. It would’ve happened with any stone

    Raise the angle or get the edge out further from the clamp or use the pen knife clamp jaws!

    I know alot of my older videos got copyright strikes for background music that was supposed to be free and in order to keep the videos I had to cut those sections. Since then I haven’t been using any type of music to avoid that issue. Idk if that’s what you’re referring to but id assume it probably is.

    this kind of blew my mind cause most people apply a lot of pressure when profiling, but you used a heavy grit and only a few passes. My confusion is over the stropping, why do you strop by hand? wont this defeat the purpose of the precision bevel? and it seems like your pressing harder when you strop?

    I reprofiled before hand off camera to keep the video from being insanely long! And when you strop by hand you can feel when you are at the exact angle, when you strop guided you have no way to feel the feedback from the strop so if it isn’t making perfect contact flat with the edge bevel you wont know until its too late after you possibly rounded your apex. Also simply based off of the results I’ve gotten from doing it both ways many many times and in hand stropping always gives me far better results! Everything I do is based off sharpening hundreds of knives every kind of way you can imagine and finding what works best for me! Lots of trial and error!

    KME is as easy as it gets. Its going to be harder with other systems unless you spend hundreds of dollars on different clamps.

    I mean it doesn’t hurt to try but its not easy to build a following and build a reputation etc. its not something that can be done overnight. The market is not very large, most people don’t want to pay for quality precision work. Once their knife is dull they just sell it and buy a new one. The amount of people that actually value this kind of sharpening is a small niche within the entire knife community and nobody outside of it. It’s not something thats been very profitable for me especially with the money I have in sharpening equipment and the time I dedicate to constantly find ways to further improve. It’s definitely not a “hustle”, its more of a thing that you can make a little money from time to time if it’s something you are passionate about and skilled at. You might find that your experience is completely different than mine though, you’ll never know unless you try it!
