Paul Taylor (English comedian living in France) has a funny video about speaking without an accent. The problem as a foreigner without an accent, is that you inevitably still make grammar mistakes, but not the kind that a native would ever make. But since you have no foreign accent, people don't think you're a foreigner who speaks very well (with the occasional mistake), but instead they think you're a stupid native speaker :-).

I'm studying french and Spanish. It's crazy how I can understand 60% of this conversation without every studied italian. Really motivates me to learn it in the future

Yes you're probably being favored by those two languages. I'm Brazilian (Portuguese native speaker) and I'm also fluent in french. I can understand almost everything they say, and I've never studied Italian before.

Same here...I understand and speak a good amount of Spanish with a decent level of fluency, and I understood a good chunk of this! I tried to learn Italian in college, but I kept getting confused with similar sounding verbs that meant different things.

E' stupefacente come Katie parla italiano. non ci si riesce a credere. Solo al minuro 5:23 quando dice "me lo sto immaginando", si sente che l'ha pronunciato con una "g" molto debole, mendre invece gli italiani la pronunciano più rafforzata, quasi una doppia gg. ma a parte questo è incredibile.

I am from the US with Italian ancestry on my dad's side (but no one speaks it because they stopped teaching it to their children for some reason) I live in a Spanish speaking country for 5 years now and speak Spanish well, then learned to speak Brazilian Portuguese to an intermediate level, but have only studied Italian off and on because of two things: 1) I heard and/or read that the tense Italians use in the south when talking about the past is different than the tense that most Italians use... 2) My ancestors come from Sicily and Calabria, so I am interested in speaking with a generally more southern accent but want to also be able to not be judged by people from the north / center as speaking Italian in a "strange" way if southerners do indeed use a different past tense Do you happen to have a video about common mistakes people make when learning Italian and/or how to go about learning Italian when it's got so many accents (not to mention all of its other languages and dialects)?

I never learned Italian, but having studied French and Latin in school for five years and having later learned Spanish, I can follow most of this conversation. i would love to learn Italian - it sounds so beautiful.

I'm not able to get rid of my German accent when I speak Spanish because I can't do the trilled "R" sound that Spanish people do. If there are many R's in a word, it's like a tongue twister for me.

Parlo l'italiano con un grande accento è non capisco come sbarazzarsi di questo, ma questo video è utile

18:39 una volta ho sentito qualcuno dire: "if you fail big enough it can be exhilarating". Questo (non ricordo piú chi) stava parlando appunto di quanto sia meglio rischiare dei fallimenti (o situazioni imbarazzanti) piuttosto che ritrovarsi anziani, magari con disabilità fisiche e la volontà di ritornare indietro a provare quelle esperienze a cui si aveva rinunciato per paura di fallire.

Io imparo Italiano e anche parlo "ano" invece "anno" hahaha. E anche io ho non lo saputo. Sono di Polonia ma anche amo Italia e lingua Italiana. Saluti di Varsovia.

This almost sounds like some dialect of Spanish... I've never seen a conversation in Italian before. Phonetics and intonation is nearly the same. I can see the that the woman must be from a country where germanic languages are spoken, maybe UK or Germany. I can see that from her pronunciation, especially when unaspirated sounds appear in her speech.

It depends on your life circumstances I guess. If, say, you are planning on going and living in Japan, Japanese is for sure going to be more useful than Chinese

Adeso io no pó parlare italiano. Io só parlo due o tre parole. Io ho studiato solamente un poco de italiano, ma lo spagnolo é piu importante per me. Dopo che imparare "bene" spangnolo Io ritornaro con l'italiano. L'italiano é troppo belo.

Krashen is so very right. Speaking a second language at native level involves rediscovering the world thru the new language in the same way a child embarks on the journey of entering adulthood. It requires the same intense desire of belonging that is in fact the desire of being a subject of language and thus of the world. Lovely indeed but not for everyone. There's nothing lacking in speaking a foreign language with an accent since, as an adult, you're already a subject (you've already been civilized, hence "castrated" by your native language) so why do it again?

Hey, you forgot to introduce the dog whose paws we see at the end! If Katie is English, how come the few times she speaks English, she sounds mostly American? 😂

Ma quante situazioni imbarazzanti ho avuto in varie lingue! Alcune mi turbano ancora dopo molti aNNi))) un altro esempio (per fortuna non mio) è il famoso "pene arrabbiato" al posto di "penne all'arrabbiata". Cmq come avete giustamente notato è importante riderci sopra
