How to get a Gel Cast! -- 3 Washdays! 1 Video! How to use a gel cast to control washday results!

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Oh the gel cast! There are SOOO many misconceptions around the gel cast. I will be honest, I really thought it was a bad thing when I first started. I did NOT want crunchy hair. But turns out that this is actually a tool that you can use to control how your hair turns out on washday!

One year into wearing my hair naturally curly and after soaking up all curl info like sponge, to water. I now have frizz free defined curls every washday. I have hair that is finely predicatable. I have been having no problems with refreshing my hair type. I leave my hair til day 4 b4 re washing. My scalp is happy and healthy. I finely feel like I'm at the point where I no longer have any questions or need help 😱🤯. I started watching your channel when I couldn't get a curl clump in my 2aish hair. I now have nurtured my hair back to its natural healthy 3b 3c curls. Yay Their is hope hang in there everyone on this journey and thanks so much Courtney for everything ❤

Thank you for sharing how your hair looks when it's straighter/brushed out and air-dried! Mine tends to look the same way when I do that, but my hair has been getting curlier and curlier when I do scrunch/use product, so seeing how your hair looks both ways gives me hope on my curly journey!

Thanks for the great video! Showing multiple wash days must have taken a while, I really appreciate the time you took to do that rather than just trying to pump out as many videos as possible. A great follow up to this video would be to see your second day, third day, etc results with each of these casts and how you refresh them. Would love to see that!

Last wash day I used a 1/2 & 1/2 mix of their air dry cream & protein cream while in shower (I then wet plop), followed by strengthening foam, then shape up aqua gel and WOW did I get the best results EVER! This was Sunday & it's Tuesday afternoon as I write this & I haven't done anything else but take my hair out of its satin wrap in the morning & voila! I can already tell tomorrow will still be rocking!

I truly appreciate all these videos! I spent so much time on both moisture and protein masks and used ALL the products and got no curls this last wash day 😅 but watching your video answered my questions. My hair dried straight and beautiful but was unfortunately too too weighed down with all my curl creams and Leave-In, foam and masks do hold a curl LOL My last wash before this one was great and the curls looks smooth and perfect even on day four after brushing through them. But I didn't weigh my hair down with a bunch of products.

As you said, every hair is different. I use half of teaspoon of leave-in on my hair and half of a teaspoon of a gel and I get a super super super hard cast. 🤷🏻‍♀️ I used a teaspoon of the soufflé and a pump of the CurlSmith foam and even after I scrunched the hard cast, it looked like I still had a cast. I am washing today and will use will half of the amount of these products. Hopefully, it will turnout great. Thanks for this video. It is extremely helpful. 🙏🏻♥️

Please be careful everyone! You can give yourself brain damage, swelling, and concussions by shaking your head around. I have read several stories of Curly haired people who shook their heads and hair too much for many years and ended up with brain swelling. I noticed for myself I was having small side effects, and now I ONLY slowly move my head around in big circles while flipping my hair around.

;) so glad I stumbled on this curly girl never knew, in 60's with dye dark hair over 40 yrs and long, so got some curly strand some dry flat stiff, ugh, and to top it off put powder on the roots over and over, that gets brushed in, so I just clip it back on both side and forget about it, and oh my gosh, can this be a dream of healthy hair, so silly me bought so much stuff, waiting on a gel, so a custard came and tried Pytho stuff which I gather is not a get the head clean but moisture, it made my hair soft yet dried a bit different not all the flyaways and dry part a bit smoother not alot but some with is a start 1st try but going nuts on what to do. Never new curly then remember brothers and sister pounding on the door when I took 2 hours to blow dry so not sure even this 2 whatever I can see hair on the floor and told thick yet now after all yada yada I don't think so, I am no face bbb and hopefully someone can hit me up to help (same name) have not had nice hair for over 20 years.

Courtney, thank you for mentioning that cast isn't necessary. I would add that it's bad news for some hair types. For my medium/coarse textured, medium porosity, medium thickness hair I avoid hard hold gels like the plague because they give me crunch that will not scrunch out. The only gels I've tried that give me a cast are medium hold gels and they have their own problems for me. Somehow with curl creams I either get a hard cast or they don't hold well overnight.

I found with the In Shower Style Fixer that I don't use enough since I don't section in the shower. I typically go with Ouidad, but decided to go back to the CS Souffle again now that I know more and I forgot to emulsify thegel in my hands. It was so hard I couldn't break the cast and couldn't fluff it at all. I had to just wash my hair again to loosen it. So if you want your hair to not move at all you can try it that way. I wouldn't recommend it though.

What hair type do you have? I feel like if your hair is 2C or curlier you would get better results airdrying without twists. For volume, you can flip all of your hair to one side and scrunch. Wait for 10 minutes, then flip your hair again. Once your hair is dry, shake out.

I am probably 2B. I definitely agree with you! But I am immensely lazy and don’t often want to bother with product and unpredictability. And my hair health is not good enough yet that I can do a product-free air dry like Courtney. The twists function as a product-free, heat-free alternative to a blow-out. I’m probably not doing my curl memory any favors, I guess.

So, a few years ago I used mousse on my hair(it hasn't been it's natural shape in a long time and really doesn't hold it's shape well anymore either) which left my hair crunchy and gross feeling. I'm pretty much striving for that texture? Is it normal to possibly get it from mousse?

I have 2b-c hair. My hair is very long and medium thickness. I have just recently started curly girl method. I have used 2-3 thick gels and the cast is beautiful. I have done crunching with and without oil. My hair looks beautiful for about an hour maybe less. It holds and fluffs a bit better with using oil. After this it quickly starts to loose definition. Any suggestions?

I have medium-coarse, low porosity hair. My hair just won’t absorb too much of anything. So anyone who is having trouble getting a cast, I use mousse on wet hair, plop, then GENTLY glaze gel on top of damp hair, scrunch, then microplop the excess water & product. I also get a cast so strong I could wear my hair straight up in the air. When I apply gel to wet hair, I never get a cast.

Courtney I just had an epiphany!! You know how you get real oily in your roots!! Its because you rinse the conditioner out upside down instead of letting the water first hit the top of your hair and rinsing it out that way! I know this because I have tried both ways rinsing out the conditioner upside down will leave more conditioner in the front top part of my hair where the water doesnt directly hit it. I know this is why for my hair and I just wanna know can you just flip the other way and rinse out the conditioner from the top portion first running down and see if that helps your oiliness!!! I hope this helps I hope you try it if it can work for you!!

hi! hairstylist here:) so when you’re conditioning you want to generally stay away from the scalp when you’re putting it on because your scalp has natural oils that your mids and ends don’t have. so flip your head upside down and just get your mids and ends THEN if your really feel inclined, run just a bit of that conditioner up to your roots (but i honestly wouldn’t recommend it). hope this helps!

  • @purple_diver

@ the "grey" comment, as someone who went entirely white/silver extremely early it's not that hair. It's something else. My hair since finally figuring out what my 2c/3a very thick hair needs are is never frizzy anymore. Plus, now that my hair is getting the protein/moisture it needs, I can even brush it between washes when I just want to keep it back off my face (it's super long, too, so off the face can be a relief lol). Silver hair is AWESOME I use semi-permanent purple, turquoise, pink hair colour and it works perfectly with no damage and no bleach. Best of luck to you, I'm sure you'll find what you're hair needs it just takes time. :)

My advice is to put gel in it if you have to air dry. But if I’m being honest, diffusing is what turned my hair from flat to voluminous! Sure, volume with air-dried hair is POSSIBLE, but when shaking your hair out it won’t last for longer than maybe 40+ minutes. Diffusing gives me volume that lasts for 2 days straight. When you say the time it takes to blow-dry, I’m confused! My hair takes 30 minutes to blow-dry with diffusing. But maybe that’s because I take bigger sections? I don’t know! Either way, air or blow dry, GEL SAVES YOUR HAIR FROM FRIZZ!

Hi. I am new to the wavy hair experience (I think my hair is changing as I age). I think I understand this process, but I do have a question. I take showers at night usually and I put gel in the shower and scrunch. I get the crunchy gel cast, but then go to sleep on it and I wake up and it is not great. Do I have to move my showers to the morning when I have a lot less time? Or, can I re-wet my hair in the morning, then apply the gel, dry, SOTC, etc? If I do that, do I apply gel only in the morning, or both at night and in the morning? Thanks.

I have tried to use the reactivator spray from Curlsmith but it doesn’t work on my wavy hair! I have low porosity hair and the product just lingers on my hair strands like a gooey oily residue 😫 spent a lot on it too. No matter how much I tried to get it to absorb into my hair it just wouldn’t. And because of the residue it would weight my hair down and pull my waves down and it would make it matte so bad 🥺 I was so disappointed. Crazy how some products work amazing on different hair! I’d advise anyone to try a sample of this (if you can get a sample, especially if you have low porosity hair like me! It might work great for you but might not too).
