I finally figured out my hair would never be as curly as yours. I know you’ve told us a million times but it just sank in. I LOVE my scalp brush, it’s like the cheapest thing I’ve bought. I dislike gel in every form and I’m having fun trying different shampoo and conditioner. I’m ok with drug store products and feel really happy about my previously undiscovered wavy hair. Thanks for being awesome.

I just want to say if you have any flakiness in your scalp, a scalp brush is a life saver! I have mild seborrhoeic dermatitis and used to use physical scalp scrubs as a pre-shampoo to keep it under control but the scalp brush is so much cheaper and saves me $ on an extra product!

Courtney, having shorter hair, does make it a little more difficult/impossible for a pineapple. I cut my hair short 8 months ago. It is now longer, but not yet to my shoulders. I saw someone do this, and it has changed my hair. I look silly but... I put a high unicorn pony with the top parts of my hair (the hair kind of flopping over my forehead) and the bottom hairs pulled back in a separate loose pony. I either wear a cap or just sleep on the silk pillowcase. My hair has so much volume after doing that. I have been able to extend my wash days as well. I can do a shake and go the 1st 2 days without a refresh. In all fairness, though, my scalp never gets greasy, so IDK if your results would be the same or not. I would love to see you try it.

I use the spray/mister more than anything else. Think it depends on if you refresh your hair between wash days without adding too much water by using your wet hands and over touching your hair. My hair frizzes super easy so misting helps before refreshing.

A small part of me gasped and died when you mentioned hair oils haha. My coarse hair drinks that stuff up!! But I totally agree that not everyone needs them and when my hair was much healthier I noticed it would get weighed down easily by oils. Also this cut and style is so cute!!

I have very coarse hair also. I need hair oils. I also need a scalp brush to really scrub my scalp and stop it from itching. A satin bonnet is essential. Without it, my thick coarse hair looks like a funky Armenian mess, even though I sleep on a satin pillow. I also really need a spray bottle. I use Curlsmith's bond treatment before I wash my hair. Spray bottles are necessary to dampen the hair. Bond repairs are necessary for my color treated hair. I'm 51, so I like to hide the bit of gray I do have.

Ha, I was just looking at refresher sprays to see if I "need" one! You saved me, lol. I shall try the wet hands with tiny bit of styling product maneuver. My Flairisol sprayer is now best used to mist the watercolor paints in my palette to reactivate them and get them nice and juicy for painting. My Denman brush and scalp scrubber sit around unused... I did recently purchase the Olaplex No 7 oil to try for moisture retention on my ends, smoothing frizz, and scrunching out any gel cast (I do live in a desert climate and my hair is almost all gray and tends to get dry). We shall see how that goes...

  • @musikluver

Flairisol bottle is a must for me! If you apply your products properly, misting and using water can reactivate your product helping you use less product. I also bought a super cute hair wrap that I use in place of a bonnet and it protects my hair while I fly! 🎉

Hey Courtney, regarding 'the bonnet'- I have wavy/curly hair, which gets pulled straighter easily. The bonnets I prefer have narrower bands (wide bands press down my fringe pieces!)- BUT to use them, I also must use fabric headbands (the ones that are gathered where meant to go at the nape, but wider where meant to sit atop) backwards- the narrow part on my forehead on top of the bonnet band, the wider part stretched wide and across the back of my head to help hold my hair up. This way I do not need to use any sort of holder in my hair (e.g. pineapple). The locks of hair at my neck do get flattened, but this happens no matter what I do. I understand some curlies do not need any helpers to keep their hair up in their bonnet, but my hair is fine and can be slippery. Idk if this helps anyone, just sharing the thought!

  • @amandacochilla2862

My super fine wavy curly hair is short enough (just below my ears) that I only use one of those headbands with the narrow part on my forhead and the wide part gathering up the hait at the back of my head. I've tried a few bonnets, but they fall off.

I agree with honestly all of these! The perfect hair care towel is very great, but you don't neeeeed one 😂 I'm honestly soo glad you didn't mention 'not needing a diffuser' let's be real, you don't NEED one but man with my hair air drying and not being super thick, it will take literally ALL DAY to dry maybe even into the next if I threw it into a bun for work that day! I didn't buy an oil for a long time after my healthy hair journey, I chose the Curlsmith bonding oil after seeing so many out there, and it's nice to use to scrunch out the crunch with! It leaves my hair super shiny ☺️

For me, some kind of spray bottle is necessary, but after a couple of fine mist bottles just stopped working, I find a regular cheap spray bottle works just fine. My hair dries out while I’m styling so I need to rewet some sections. And I can get a great refresh just by spraying with water +/- a little gel. I also consider my satin cap a necessity so my longish curls don’t end up flopping around all night. I’ve found I like a TangleTeazer brush as much as a Denman and it’s multipurpose as I can detangle with it also. I agree about many of the intense treatments. I’ve found myself treating problems I don’t have, which is silly. I do like an occasional protein treatment, but I don’t think I really need bond repair at this point. Great video, as always.

Same here re mist bottle!! Except different reason; water doesn't penetrate my (thick, half Indian) hair very well so a regular spray bottle or using my hands does next to nothing😬 refreshed for the first time with the mister and my waves came back (still need to get hair-friendly sleep item)! Re scalp brush, I've thought of it before and may get one in the future. However I was told the secret by my hair-dressing family: when your hair's washed in a salon they use the knuckles closest to fingernails!! And that hasn't failed me yet :)

Thanks to tiktok I learned my hair is not straight or damaged! I've been loving all your videos but this one especially when it came to a refresh spray. Here’s an interesting observation I made. I went a few months without doing a bond treatment/deep conditioning session, figuring I really didn’t need it. Then I started having problems with my hair, it wouldn’t behave no matter what I tried. Then it hit me to try an Olaplex/Curlsmith treatment and surprisingly it made a difference. My hair was great again. 🤷‍♀️ So I try to do at least one a month now. But those products work well during the transition phase.

Also, if you buy hair products from a store that allows returns, use it if you try a product you don't like!! Don't feel obligated to keep a product you don't like! I had to return so many products that I used once and made my scalp itch. On another topic, I'm seriously considering using a different brush after seeing several youtubers say they don't use denman brushes anymore. I love the results with my denman brush but I hate that no matter how much I detangle and how careful I am, I still end up pulling some hair out. My hair I think has gotten thinner from using it.😢

Thank you for this very informative post! The only item that I need for me is the mist sprayer bottle. I use distilled water as our well water is very hard. Since I’m “pushing “ eighty, I wash my hair once a week or less as there is now much less hair then 20years ago. However, my hair loves, loves, loves moisture. A misty or rainy day makes my natural waves and curls practically yell “eeeeee haaaaaa”! Every morning from my second day on,I spritz my hair and scrunch it.Ta Da🎉! May you have a blessed and joyful Resurrection Sunday✝️. “It is finished”💜!

Hey Courtney! My sis in Christ! Happy Resurrection Day to you & yours. Oh, there are so many of thing I stopped using & doing, realizing & learning what my hair is, which is low to medium porosity & is healthy. In addition to what you said, I stopped the weekly clarifying & deep conditioning, with a heated cap, for 30 minutes. Now I may do it maybe every other week & just deep condish for maybe 5 minutes. I also regret refresh sprays, they really don't do much of anything for me, too. I rather do what you said. I also regret getting the Denmen brush. I find it pulls on my hair & I have taken out some rows. I like the wet brush and the tangle teezer. I regret get the CS Bond Curl Rehab Salve, bc afterwards, I learned my hair is already healthy and low to medium porosity and because my is lp & healthy, I don't need to use oil for pp(pre-poo). Also, I learned that I don't need both cc (curl cream) & leave-in conditioner, I am using just a little, just to use them up & it'll be a while bc I have so much of them. 😆 I just used up the last of the cowash & not doing that anymore. But I do love my scalp brush! I like wearing the silk bonnet in the winter, keeps me warmer while sleeping. I really don't think a mist bottle is not that great for me. It take so much just to rewet my hair. I rather use just a regular spray bottle.

I recently got a diffuser thinking that it would be a total game changer for my hair. Honestly, I've found that I don't need it. I barely notice any extra curl spring (although it is really nice for being able to wash my hair at night and go to sleep with it dry). That doesn't seem to be a popular opinion, though.

I use a bamboo pillowcase instead of a hair towel or tshirt. I fold the pillowcase in half lengthwise (this makes it a long, thin rectangle), then put three safety pins along the edge with the opening for the pillow to hold it in the long rectangular shape. That makes it somewhat resemble a hair-drying towel. It's easy to use for plopping, microplopping, or just getting my hair out of the way while I put my face lotion on. I also don't sleep on a silk pillowcase. I use the same bamboo pillowcases as I use for my hair towel substitute. They're incredibly smooth and absorbent, cheaper than silk, I don't worry so much about staining them with hair dye (I'm currently rocking purple roots, hot pink length, and coral tips) or drooling on them, and I don't have to wash them by hand. I do still buy silk scrunchies (Fisher's Finery brand), as I haven't found anything else that works as well. The bamboo scrunchies I bought have wider and stiffer elastic. I get chronic migraines; the extra pull on my hair is intolerable. My partner's hair is long, so he uses them. I do need scalp treatments, but, that's because I have psoriasis. Of course, it's worst on my scalp. I use both prescriptions and non-prescription treatments, depending on what my scalp wants. My favorite scalp treatment is from Derma E; it's good as-is, but it's _great_ after I add a few extra ingredients that have been clinically shown to reduce psoriasis plaques.

Thank you for this video! I am doing the cg m since about two months now and with your channel learned so much!!! Here in The Netherlands they keep mentioning you NEED a heat cap to deep condition with a mask. I have never seen it in your videos so I am would like to hear your thoughts on that.

I have a scalp brush but don't use it as often as I thought I'd be! It just feels good and that's why I haven't tossed it in the garbage. The dilemma! I used to be able to use the Denman brush with hardly any issue when I had virgin low porosity hair! I do agree the brush design is quite outdated and wet brushes work better! I find myself using my spray bottle more often with my bleached hair. It really helps with brush styling. I like my cotton microfiber towels but when in doubt, I WET PLOP! I tried using a t-shirt maybe twice, but I couldn't get the plop to stay. I bought a couple diffuser caps and I think I only had one good day with one. I'll use a bonnet after just styling my hair and don't want to try a pineapple. These days I like my hair up when I sleep, otherwise I wake up with a rat's nest! I have a satin scarf I still have yet to try. 😂 I got even more buildup with co-washes when I had my hair permed! NEVER AGAIN! I'd been using a hair oil to seal in hydration when I got it bleached and also use it for a pre shampoo treatment. I find my hair LOVES curl cream as of late. I'll use a LCO or LOC method when I want to look at least half decent but want to seal any moisture. I've bought a few refresh sprays and I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong, but refreshing in general really isn't my strong suit either! I've been using bonding treatments for my newly processed hair! I did use them when I had low porosity hair just to maintain my mane's health. I'm not sure I'd ever needed scalp treatments since I wash my hair every 3 or 4 days. That said, I like your opinions here! My hair seems to be in rebellion right now and not just because I got it processed. God give me patience!

Thanks for this video! I started with CHM a half year ago and I thought I have to buy EVERYTHING single thing that seem to work great for everyone else. But I am to lazy to use the Denman Brush, I can not sleep with my hair together and also not with a cap or bonnet or whatever. Also I started to use again products that are not CHM approved because I like them and after I realize that I dont have to follow every single "rule" i felt a lot better. Thansk for your videos!

Have you tried Curl Keeper's refresher spray? I'm not a fan of spraying anything but thought I'd try it. I have low density, fine hair. 2a/b to 3b. This gives volume and hold. I don't use it all the time. Sprays get all over the place lol. But I like it as a treat. Note :It can feel producty if you use too much. I also like their cream hairspray, Tweek. It's versatile. Great hold. Easier to apply directly to areas like roots. I use it to glaze over my hair after I've brush styled and micro plopped ( with the Perfect Hair Towel lol) and it gives volume.

Good morning!! I could not get into co-washing. It never worked for me and I wash my hair weekly. As my hair has gotten healthier I am using less curl cream. I am hoping to eliminate it when I have finished it up. My hair is fine so I don't use much on wash day. I wish I never bought the denman brush it just sits in a drawer. I absolutely love my spray bottle and perfect hair care towel though! Have a wonderful day everyone!😊

Thank you for this video, it's so helpful for starters. ❤ When I tell people I am naturally wavy they think it's such a hassle because of influencers lol. I use just a plastic spray bottle and the scalp brush Only because my hair is so oily recently..i hardly used this earlier when my scalp was just dry/normal. So glad someone is out there telling people not to overspend unnecessarily on 😂 I didn't get a bonnet for my hair until my hair was very long and I realised scarves were just not working as I move so much in my sleep lol.

The bonnet worked better on my longer hair. I just cut my hair two weeks ago (and it's her same length) and I'm struggling with what to do since the smaller pineapple just falls out along my nape. So I'm trying the bonnet again because so much hair falls out of pineapple. I don't wanna but a silk pillowcase either. 🤦🏽‍♀️🤷🏽‍♀️

As someone who's had fantasy hair color well over a decade and only washing my hair once or twice a week I own one co-wash for those twice a week days or while camping as dry shampoo does nothing for me. With colored hair its nice having the benefit of a conditioner w hint of shampoo. (Grateful I don't suffer oily hair and can go a week ) * I too get great results refreshing with running some water through my hair and crunching in my "magical" leave in conditioner and maybe a mouse if i plan to diffuse for volume. 😢my hair is still learning as am I. Theres still lingering chemical damage, my hair grows slow , it's layered and I want to grow it to one length so my trimming off the damaged ends happen sporadically when i have the length to cut.

I think a bonnet or satin cap is beneficial for a couple of reasons. One is if you want to have your pillow cases match your sheets, it’s easier to just use a separate thing for the hair. Two, and somewhat more important, is that a bonnet can protect your hair if you are using a CPAP. The CPAP was damaging my hair (giving me bangs I didn’t want from the breakage) and a satin lined beanie cap saved my hair. Not entirely related to having wavy hair but totally related to healthy hair and not talked about much.

Love this video but I actually disagree with your opinion on not needing oil. I found when I first started in 2018-19 I didn't see any improvements in frizz and moisture retention until I incorporated oil into my regiment. The difference I felt after using argan oil was night and day. I recommended oil to some of my other friends with curls and even straight hair and using a few drops after leave in conditioner made a world of difference. Specifically for frizzy, thirsty hair. I don't think you need it if you have very soft and thin hair.

Personally I SWEAR by satin bonnet because I’m a crazy a sleeper so here is a very low chance that I’ll even stay on my pillow so a fancy pillow case is just a waste of money plus it’ll just get tangled without a bonnet and all of my volume that I get from styling just goes away if not using a bonnet so bonnets are really really good for me and I hope that this helped you

For my very healthy, fine, wavy curly hair I absolutely do not need a gel. I detest how they make my hair feel and look (even after SOTC), and after diffusing for an hour my hair still won't be 100% dry until the following day. I much prefer a good mousse. And I don't need a curl cream, an oil, dry shampoo, refresh spray, deep conditioner/mask,/treatment, etc. I wash my hair about every 10 days and only refresh with water, a teeny bit of leave-in and a little mousse if I have to leave the house. All I need is shampoo, conditioner, leave-in conditioner, and mousse/foam. Love Curlsmith Shine line and their Bouncy Strength Volume Foam! And I don't need tools other than a diffuser (Conair, bought on sale at Ulta for $25), a pick and a wet brush. I also do not need a satin pillow case. Can't sleep on one. Yes, I have bought several, but they are too hot on my ears and cause them to itch and blister. My satin bonnet allows me to keep my ears uncovered and no itchy, blistery ears! Happy Easter, Courtney!
