How to Get a Drum Tight Picture Backing | Canvas Backing Paper | Hanging Considerations

This video demonstrates how to get a "drum tight" finish when applying backing paper to a canvas or picture.
I also debate about which hanging method to use.
The follow-up video about the front and process used to protect the art can be found here • Protecting Eco Dyed Da...

    Thanks so much for taking the time to make this. I’ve just focused on the front of the painting and all of a sudden I need to know all these particular finishing details. It’s so foreign to me but I know these details to craft matter when presenting to people.

    Tried this, looked terrible while it was still wet and just glued, about an hour later I looked at it--perfectly flat and true to your words--drum tight! BIG thanks for the tip!

    thank you for making this video. I won a Steve Hanks signed print in an online auction and when I got it home it had areas of black mold. So I needed to break down the entire setup including the beveled matte. This caused me to lose the paper backing. I cleaned everything up with Isopropyl alcohol, I followed your method to put the paper backing on and it came out beautiful.

    This takes work to glue backing paper on this way, but appears well worth it. One thing sure: avoid doublesided tape.

    I am in the research stage. I suspect dampening the inside of the dust cover could trap moisture and could lead to mold growing. I want to keep moisture away from my paintings and prints.

    Hi, the dampness is very short lived. Being paper, it dries. In my experience it does not have any lasting moisture once dry to worry about. I have done this for years and have never had any issues. Be sure to just gently moisten the paper (not getting it soaking wet) and not the item it is being put on. Dampening the paper simply causes it to tighten upon drying so it is not a sloppy/lose finish on the back - looks more professional. My father who was an art teacher also papered the back of his paintings. Thanks for watching, Em PS: this is for papering the back where the paper is not put direclty on the art. As you see in this video, there is a wooden frame the the paper is being applied to, not the canvas back itself. Or if the item is in a frame, the paper is put on the frame and not directly on the art piece.

    Also haven't had any issues with this moisture either because it is damp, however, I use a thin line of double sided tape instead of glue, and a misting bottle or spray bottle with water or alcohol on the paper after I've attached it with the double sided tape. Then I take a little fan or hair dryer and watch it dry and shrink which is actually cool to see it tighten and look so good after! The water makes the paper shrink and tighten up for that "drum" type look. Most folks who frame pictures professionally do this as well.

    Wow, I don't know what to suggest. I'd be interested in your final decision. I like the backing process. Have you ever had one rip after getting it drum tight or is the paper pretty tough? My final decision would be: On Etsy a lot of sellers will give the option of what kind of hanger they prefer, like you mentioned. That would be a little extra work, but would your pictures store better with no hanger, so it really wouldn't matter what kind you use. Let the customer decide. If they have no preference, then tell them how it will come?

    I ordered heavy duty craft paper as that was all that was available for 36” wide. I have several open canvases I want to do this to- how difficult will this be? Then I put the D rings on?

    Hi, that should work. Don't think it would be too hard, unless the item is very large. Just be sure to follow the proceedures here about dampening the paper (not soaking wet) because that dampness is what goes tight upon drying. I would just do one first to make sure you like it. Or test on something smaller to get the hang of it. I would use a bookbinders or PVA glue that is water based. Thank you for watching, Em

    Thank you for creating this video!! I just purchased a painting (looks like 1980's). Question: What's the fastest and simplest way to remove the canvas paper backing without damaging anything and how do I get ALL of the paper off the wood? I want to paint over the painting.

    Hi, good question. I don't know what they used for the glue (water soluble or sovent, etc.) Personally, I would gently take the paper off from the hollow part of the back over to the frame area first. And then take a scraper to gently scrape on an area to take of some of the paper/glue off the frame (or sandpaper). Then sanding it down may be the best option - and clean the dust up after. If you can get the back damp in case it is water soluable glue, you could try dampening a towel and setting the painting back on top of the wet/damp towel and see if that will soften the glue (some glues will not hold up to water/dampness. In that case maybe it would be easier to scrpe off the debis? This is assuming you are talking about a painting stretched over a wood frame and glue used to adhere it to the frame. Perhaps others with more expereince about how to refurbish used paintings have a better idea. Thank you for watching, Em

    Have the paper ever become loose after some time? Do you put a new backing on or re dampened the paper and add new glue?

  • @emsplace

    @emsplace

    HI, I have never had a problem with it coming loose. I suppose after many... years depending upon conditions. But for me, I have some small curio frames done in this technique that I have had in my curio cabinet for decades with no issue. I can't speak to glue formula changes from a manufacturer over the years, but so far so good for what I used. Which is usually a PVA bookbinders glue and sometimes Elmer's Glue All. I just use any brown mid-weight kraft paper or paper bag. In this video I think it was a brown paper bag from the grocery store. Those works good and comes in various thickness depending upon the size and store. I save my paper bags so have a lot in the closet to choose from. Thanks for watching, Em
