How To Gather Cactus Fruit And Making Bushcraft Breakfast
To day we demonstrate how to gather prickly pear cactus fruit, also known as tunas. Then we use them to make jam for our fresh bannock and coffee.

I forgot to post my bannock bread recipe, so here I go: 1 cup flour, 1 teaspoon baking powder, 1/4 teaspoon of salt, 1/4 teaspoon sugar, 1/4 cup dry milk powder, 2 tablespoons of butter, 1/3 cup water. Mix all the ingredients except for the water, into a ziplock bag, blend them all together. Heat up cast iron and add oil. Once the pan is warm, mix water into your ziplock bag and mix it up. Add the goo onto the pan, cook for about 8 minutes then turn the loaf over. Cook for about another 8. Then bannock is ready.

haha! funny story about those things. I moved to Arizona when I was 8. LOVED it. 2nd day we went gathering those things so we could make jelly. Reached too far and lost my balance and landed head first into a *huge* prickly pear cactus. The jelly was great, the learning experience even better.

Those are edible raw, and they have a sweet and sour taste to them, also there are other varieties here in Tunisia, that are bigger and sweeter, there are some that even grow late in September, that goes big and red and have more thorns than the red small ones, but they are Extremely sweeter and more delicious, hope I see them in your videos some day
That bannock looks really good. I love making agua de tuna during the humid summers of Florida. So refreshing

Junkyard Fox I usually use about 6 tunas. I process them like how you did, I place them in the blender with about 2 cups of water. I pour it into a pitcher using a strainer to get rid of the seeds. I add about 4 more cups of water and add sugar. So delicious

A technique I used once to eat the prickly pear fruit was take a sharp stick and pierce it from the top, break off from the cactus pad, skin it with a sharp knife and eat it like a pop-sickle. I thought it tasted like a combination of kiwi and strawberry.

That looks good. I'm gonna try that. Some nopalitos fried up with onion, garlic, and chicken would be good too. Now I'm hungry. Think I'll have to cook something up for dinner now.
Thank you for sharing! So awesome!
Loving your videos. I just found your channel. I grew up in Las Vegas, NV and learned so much while camping in the desert. I used large rocks to hit the ground near the cactus trees to test for snakes. Also, eating the snakes can be quite tasty (there are millions of them in the desert). Just soak in buttermilk to get rid of the gamey taste, and BBQ them.
Always have been in favorites list
Found some in a park here in south Florida! Never seen any on this side of the country until today!! So amazing
Thank you James
Good video James. I don't have any recipes but I do eat the fruit everytime we to Mexico. I also enjoy the young prickly pear made into a salad. That stuff is hard to get fresh in Canada. Take care boys.
Damn, my mouth started watering when you peeled those fruits. LOL
I just had a weekend of some wild edibles but haven't even started writing. These fruits were in there as well. Cheers. Good video

I helped my aunt make so much freaking tuna jelly last year, it took a week to do it all...makes for excellent gifts, and you can add flavors to it, we had 8 flavors, about 5 gallons of each...pitty I don't like jelly or jams. Definitely going to have to just try smashing tunas on some bannock..that looks amazingly good.

The bannock bread recipe seems so simple, but I would worry about the butter in it going rancid before you had a chance to cook it out in the desert heat. Or is it something you would prepare that day to be used within a few hours? Without the butter, I'll bet you could store many portions over long term to always have one ready.
