How to fly rc plane without self level gyro

If you want to fly rc planes to their fullest potential, then you must learn how to fly without the self level mode. Stabilization=FMS or SAFE=Spektrum. This video is a brief tutorial on how to do this safely and understand the differences in self level and gyro for wind mitigation. Optimized=FMS or AX3X=Spektrum. Good stuff Will. I get the idea that new / learning pilots in future months might really benefit if they have the chance to locate and go through your series. You do a fine job with your communication and display. As you were talking about how to bank the aircraft, then hold it in the turn with elevator - etc. I thought of something that we did along those lines. Just about everyone has a problem while learning - of giving the wrong stick movement when the plane is coming towards themselves - and trying to roll the wrong way. So we would mention that the student might 'pre-program' the turn in their mind. Think about 3 control movements all following each other. Enter a turn with left, then back, then right. "Left - back - right!" Or - right - back - left. It seemed to help that they were putting those moves on the wall of their brain so that it was easier to keep up with what direction they needed to use for that third step - so they could finish a turn with success.

The point of this video is to help the Safe or stabilized mode pilots to not be afraid to fly the airplane and enjoy doing it. The point about using safe as a panic mode is valid and some pilots use safe for landings still. Flying without the gyro to me is more fun and requires me to be on the sticks more. I enjoy landing all my water planes and STOL planes with out safe or stabilized mode. It requires a finer touch but after practice I can get a better spot on landing. Great video enjoyed watching.

Like you, I grew up flying before gyros were around. I have several planes with gyros since I made the switch to Spektrum from FrSKY. Some planes really seem to fly better with a gyro, but not all. I see many pilots at my field fly in safe and are afraid to fly in AS3X, but want to do the cool aerobatics they see others do. Hence this video to help them out. Thanks for the support Tug, appreciate it.

Great video! I've never used safe since I learned to fly in 1980 with glow powered planes and it wasn't available then!

You and I learned around the same time. First time I played with safe was when a new pilot asked me to fly his plane for him a bout a year ago.. I've found it's helpful for those new pilots thats don't have a buddy box/coach handy.. At least it might reduce the number of crashes a little.😎

These are very helpful and the best i have seen but i dont recall you saying what controls you are using to turn, Rudder, ailerons or a combination? When to use each or not to would be helpful. The landing tips are very helpful. THANKS!

Thanks for the feedback. I've made a few videos for new pilots on flying 101 and speak about the rudder use. Not sure you'e checked them out yet. A few of them dig into the rudder and aileron mixing on turns. Some plane don't require mixing Ail/rud while others do. I made a video specifically about the use of the rudder and how new pilots can really excel by learning how to use it.. Thanks for watching and commenting. Btw, if you find you still need some additional information on the ail/rud mix. Let me know.. I'm always open to help. Will

SAFE is great to learn on, but you need to wean yourself off of it early in the learning phase. If you can't fly yourself out of an bad situation, you certainly don't have the presence of mind to flip a switch. The reward for switching off SAFE is the same reward that many of us have forgotten. We learned to ride a bicycle with the aid of training wheels. Once they were removed and we successfully rode the bike, NOBODY ever asked their parents to put the training wheels back on. Think about that.

I totally agree with your training wheels analogy. SAFE/Stabilized is a good learning tool, but if pilots want to fly the fun aerobatic or scale warbirds, they need to get off that self leveling (bank limiting) system..
