How to Fix your Laptop

Repairing a laptop may sound like a brain surgery, but in fact it is more like a nose job if you are careful. With some experience, you can fix wires, connectors or cooling fan easily, or not. It could be worth a shot!

    Quick safety tips: 1) avoid getting a vacuum too close to your motherboard because it builds-up lots of static and there's a risk of ESD damaging components - a hand-pumped blower's safer, and 2) insert something through the grill to hold fan still when you blow it out because if you turn the fan backwards fast enough it can create a negative current and damage upstream components. At least that's what I've always read; if I'm wrong please correct me!

  • @Kenjismusic

    @Kenjismusic

    No u are actually right so far i see, the modern vacuum cleaners arent waking that much static but still dangerous to do, better ground yourself and the vacuum cleaner, but thats too much work.

    There are always back EMF control when fans are involved. When you power off the fan it will continue to spin and there is circuitry designed to sink that backwards voltage. Also, motherboards are usually covered with dialectric spray lacquer and are usually not bothered by discharge. This was a huge problem in the 90s and early 2000s but we have learned since then. These are small concerns but wont cause any issues in any reasonably modern Fan/circuit board.

    Back when I was doing tech-work, I had developed the concept of the Four C's. The four C's are: Cables, Connectors, Components and Clues. Cables are by far the weakest link, followed by Connectors. Components (video cards, sound cards, fans, PSU) are generally pretty reliable, but can fail. And the Clues? That is what many Users do not have, and that leads to more trouble than all the others!

  • @snoopdogie187

    correction: strange since in most cheap notebooks its always the video and or PSU failing..... The fan is mechanical, it will fail over the course of time. A good piece of hardware will realize it failed and alert you, or at least adjust to not overheat it self. Even in my well used, nearly a decade old Toshiba, what failed was the plastic case.... original fan, PSU, all boards, cables, etc.(except the hard drive that I damaged a little when I put it down too hard one day, but even that is still usable, just a few bad sectors, but I replaced it anyway since I don't like any problems.) Well used.... it either ran Folding@Home at 100% CPU usage, or I was using it for school work, or it was traveling with me between classes and home. It did this for a few years, then when I wasn't going to school, it would still travel with me to work and back, I would walk around with it a lot, etc. The case is cracked in so many places, that it cases problems when I move it, otherwise it works fine. In a Dell my mom used, the power supple jack failed, that I just re-soldered. That and the screen hinges failed, Those both happened after it was at least 5 years old. My ex has a IBM X60s, older than my Toshiba, that works perfectly, all that was ever changed was the fan. Quality matters in these components.

    Lenovo also has this interesting warranty option: If for example your hard drive is broken, they can just send you the hard drive, and you replace it yourself. And since it was so easy to open of course I've done some modding: Original HDD went where the optical drive used to be, and was replaced with an SSD. I've put the original optical drive in an external case. Way more practical that way.

    Okay certified computer tech here: Cleaning the dust out of your computer every year or two is important to maintaining the device's health and usability but don't try this vacuum method, 9/10 times your computer will probably be fine but this can make the fan spin way faster than it is supposed to and can ruin the bearings in your fan, causing it to cool far less effectively and potentially cause heavy damage to the system. Also vacuums that aren't specially designed for computers can cause a ton of static charge to build up and can potentially kill vulnerable components in your computer, just stick to short bursts of compressed air or (if you are capable of reassembling it) take the computer apart and manually clean it. Compressed air is generally safer for the average user though.

  • @tilasole3252

    @tilasole3252

    So the vacuum on it's own makes the fan spin faster for a few seconds than it normally would and that causes damage?

  • @Tomd4850

    @Tomd4850

    2 жыл бұрын

    Completely correct about the potential for ESD with common household vacuums. ESD is a far greater concern than simply spinning fans beyond their typical usage speed! Only use vacuums designed for ESD sensitive environments, but compressed or high velocity blowing air will nearly always do a better job at loosening dust and debris and has virtually zero chance of causing harmful ESD. However, blowing air over fans can cause them to spin far greater than their bearings are rated for as well, more so than most vacuums. Always secure fan blades during cleaning. BTW, what certifications do you hold to be a "certified computer tech"? 🤨
