How To Fix Subaru Gas Smell
Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары
If your Subaru Forester or Outback smells like gas when you start it up in the morning and turn on your defrost or just generally. I have an easy fix for you that only takes a 10mm socket or wrench (to remove the fuel line guards for access) and a phillips screw driver to tighten the fuel line clamps.

Just bought a 2005 Subaru Outback and this morning was the first time I smelled gasoline. Thanks for this video, I think I'll be able to fix it.

Gratitude! Thank you brother this is just what I needed. Me and my babies send so much gratitude!
Thanks for finding and posting this video Brian. Good knowledge to have. Always love the easy fixes too. Enjoyed the pre-"BFATE" commentary on The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. I have not watched it, so will check it out. Thanks again.

the book is even better! :D Hitchhikers guide to the galaxy that is :) Douglas Adams was a genius
Hello wonderful Subaru experts. I have an issue I would like a little feedback on if possible. I have an 2007 forester, 117000 miles (non turbo). I had intermittent overheating issues. Changed thermo, rad cap and rad. My local shop did the combustion gas check in coolant and it was negative. I did the thermostat hack where you drill holes in top of thermostat. Our excellent Briansmobile1 has some videos on it. The rad lower hose was not getting warm. Well it worked sorta, I drove an interstate drive of 30 mins, no overheat and lower hose was same temp as upper. I got it home and looked in overflow tank and saw some fairly consistent bubbles, say one small one every second or two. I almost certain this indicates head gasket. I have lots of trouble with this subbie. I don’t want to put anymore $ in it. So now the questions, 1. Could it be anything other than head gaskets? 2. Has anyone else done the thermostat “hack” , how long will it run (I know it can be different for different cars) before the head gasket goes catastrophic? Thank you for your time and awesome videos! Awesome job! Big fan!!!
Could this also lead to sputtering and decreased acceleration? Problem goes away after it's been running for a about an hour. It is winter here in Michigan so just curious if this is a simple fix or if I should take it in.
Idiocracy is too hard to think about these days. Just sit back and watch where we are.
I have the 2001 Outback and the raw gas smell started this August. Changing the filthy air cleaner fixed it.
This was happening to my 2001 Forester so I tightened the hose clamps. Later my engine began to overheat… did I over tighten the clamps or something else all together?? Gas smell did seem to go away however
The Hitchhikers Guide movie you showed is a spin-off from a very good old BBC series, based on the books by Douglas Adams. The BBC series was very funny, but it's quite dry humour so some people just don't get it. You should check it out🤣👍🇦🇺
I got a 2005 Subaru Legacy with 152,000 miles thanks for this, Im also reallly surprised when it started smelling because i do regular maintenance.
i have a 2000 legacy outback and had to battle those smells for so long. Keep a close eye looking for any moisture on the fuel lines. I found the ones connecting the fuel rails leaking right in the middle! Ended up replacing all of them. Total pain but worth it.

AWESOME!!!
The movie, of the TV series, of the book, of the radio show, of the script that was thought of one afternoon, while sitting on the bathroom floor, after slipping on a wet towel. Yes well worth it, and even more so that the radio shows are also "available" for listening, at the usual places.
Okay. I'm worried... I inherited a 2008 Forester with low miles, and I can feel/taste on my lips some kind of fumes that make me practically fall asleep behind the wheel... It's not sweet like coolant, and I think I notice it more when the heater or the fan is blowing... I'm sure that I would rather hear thermostat, or evap canister instead of the "H.C" word.
Hi Brain. Great tip. Do have any idea how to seal tire cement cans the ones with the brush inside . I’ve tried tape to seal the can or add some car pain thinner same with my liquid tape keeps drying out . Always watching AL 👍🇺🇸

Thanks Al. Often times it's not the air getting into the can after the lid's on, but the oxygen in the can that displaces the used product that reacts and dries it out. Try burping the oxygen out as you close it with something oxygen-free like CO2, Argon, C25 etc. can help. I've seen people do it. I generally squish the air out of wood glue bottles and anything else in a soft container. Welding shielding gas, canned air for electronics etc. can often be used. There was a guy in a shop I worked at that used refrigerant. I've seen propane used. I would go for something inert and non-flamable and easy to apply. Doing that and cleaning the sealing surfaces should be plenty preventative.

Thanks Brain. I’ll give it a shot . My wife said try it with a vacuum pump like the ones used to preserve food in plastic bags.
I thought you were going to talk about the rubber "o-ring" on the the fuel pump cover, below the rear seat. I've had 2 friends on mine upgrade the pump and the rubber thing not being well sitted and the car smelling of gas.

I heard an old vapor filter can also be responsible for fuel smell. What's a vapor filter is my first question
@imakedookie
Жыл бұрын
that should be a vapor canister, a block of carbon housed in plastic meant to capture evaporated fuel and use it without releasing to atmosphere (theoretically)... the housing cracks, the hoses age and split, etc, and they have to be periodically replaced.
sweet and I thought the smell was from my rotted out filler neck lol
Im smelling gas also in my 2010 Impreza can you do a video so i can do it myself please

I'd smoke the tank if you can. You can use a gallon ice cream bucket and rent a food grade dance party fog machine to fill the bucket. Then blow on a hose into the bucket to push it into the filler neck. Pull the back seat so you can check the top of the tank seal and lines.

@@briansmobile1 thanks I’ll give it a shot, just picked up a smoke machine recently, hadn’t even thought to use it on the filler end.
My 2006 Subaru Outback does not have clamps that may be tightened. It has clips. It smells like gas when you turn on the heater. Does anyone habe suggestions please???
