This is called Sashiko and is a Japanese mending technique. There are lots of different patterns you can do, and it looks so cool!

yes, strange (?) that she doesn’t mention where this comes from or give any credit. made me not want to watch her videos.

@@BetaniaAllen these aren’t traditional sashiko patterns and visible mending is done in a number of cultures.
This is an amazing tutorial! Visible mending always looked so daunting but after watch this I feel more confident. My favorite pair of jeans just got a hole in the knee and I wanted to try visible mending rather than just throwing them out or having a hole in them

You can do it!
Awesome. I've watched several other vids but your concise and eloquent explanations coupled with your efficient and accurate sowing has really helped consolidate the techniques into something I can try. Thanks.

Glad it was helpful!
These are lots of fun. My kids still talk about the funny patches I used to put on their jeans.

What a great memory!
Hi Melissa!! Wonderful vlog.. I love doing this to jeans, I was taught by my grandma how to sew & mend & even learned some in 4-H (made my own outfit & won 1st prize!!).. My kids always loved when I mended their clothes cause they did know what design I would do.... 💜💜🧵🧵

Yes, they finish more difficult looking than they actually are to sew!
Your jeans have so much character! Do you recommend embroidering the patch before we stitch it on the jeans or after?

It just dawned on me that embroidery stitches are in fact functional and not only for the looks! Nevermind the question. I'll give it a try on my old jeans! :-)

Yes, the embroidery helps secure the patch in place 🙂
Love this video! I'm wondering if there is a particular book that you could recommend for someone just starting this craft? Thank you!

There's this book called "the ultimate sashiko sourcebook: patterns, projects, and inspirations" that has a BUNCH of different embroidery techniques like this. Plus it was published in 2005 so you can probably find it in a library

I haven't read any mending books, so I can't give a particular recommendation.
