Hi! Which system are the grit sizes recommendations referring to? For example P180 (FEPA) is 180 (CAMI), but P1500 (FEPA) equals to 800 (CAMI). I'm not sure which grit sizes to get, my grit sizes come in the P-numbers (FEPA)

After watching this video, I had the confidence to do this myself to my car. Got a $15 from the auto parts store with the polish and protectant along with a buffing and sanding kit. Grabbed a few sheets of sand paper from the hardware store too just to make sure. I had my headlights looking like new in under an hour. Saved me a ton of money and I hope that it lasts. If it doesn't, I know that I can do it again myself!

Is it me or the yellowish layer that forms over time is not the lens cover, but just the "protective UV layer"? So I should polish the headlamp and apply a product which filters UV so It won´t be yellowish again?

  • @madtonesbr

kits come in various forms. The one I use is $20 ish and it has 3 different grades of sand paper, 2 grades of polish and a uv sealer. It also comes with a backer to use in your drill. For $20 i can do about 8-10 cars or 5-6 if the lens are really bad on 3-4 or four of them. I get a lot of my work from my towing business and do it during off time while having a beer or 3 in the evenings. It takes about 10 mins per lens and charge $35 ech lens or $45 if they are really bad. If i lived in bigger populated area I could get paid to drink beer lol.

Make friends with the guys that own a couple car washes, tire shops, mechanic shops, get me some business cards made. Just a tip... I would suggest your sanding steps should be vertical - horizontal - vertical. You want your first and last groves to be vertical. This will insure your light dispersion pattern his spread across the road surface, similar to a vertical prism distribution. Having horizontal lines after the last step will cause lights waves to be shot up into the sky.

After trying many different headlight restoration kits, and spending over a hundred dollars, not to forget the labor I put into trying to make these products work, I figured out the perfect way to get clear headlights again. I shopped online and bought replacement headlights. It took me less time to instal them, and now they are perfect. I did have to realign them as to not blind my fellow motorist driving the opposite way. I am very happy now and tell all my friends, to just buy new headlight assemblies and save time, and aggravation.

The best auto parts store brand boxed kit I've found is the Sylvania one. It's all done by hand with 400/1000/2000 grit, followed by Meguiars plastic X compound on an orbital, topped off with the supplied UV clear coat. I've done over 20 cars with this specific kit and it has worked wonders on even the worst headlights.

For the camera comparison it would've been cool if you showed the exposure meter for a scientific comparison. For example, set the camera exposure so the meter shows a couple of stops under exposed on the original, then presumably at the same camera settings the after would show a couple of stops over exposed. You would then be able to say based on the exposure difference the cleaning allows (e.g.,) 4 times as much light to pass.

Great video, My headlights are nowhere near as bad as those ones looked on the Honda, but would I be able to just use 2500-3000 wet n dry paper to clean them up a little then Polish and re coat them. Or would I have to go through the whole process??? Thanks

Hi KZread doesn't allow links so I will try to describe as best I can, both can be found on Amazon. From what he is holding, the closest thing I see might be from the Meguiar's G2980 Headlight kit that's about $24. If you don't car about getting one that is almost exactly like his, you can just search Sanding Block and they are less than $10.

  • @markeyboi6545

Car manufacturers should just make the headlight cover/lens removable and then you can just buy a new headlight cover on ebay for $5 - $10 and replace your old one.

  • @oz_medias

They have to be fully sealed so they don't fog up or collect water/moisture. You can separate the lenses but it takes practice to do it without breaking one. Just do a little networking and you'll find you can buy a lens, which normally sells for $300, for less than $50. I've seen some manufacturers sell lenses for over $1000 but you can get the same, manufacturer branded lens, for a fraction of that cost if you do some networking. (real life, face to face, not Facebook, Instagram and crap like that)

That was his Porsche. And considering his car would have numerous layers of his own sealant products already on the paint, he probably knew that the lens sealant would not have any effect on the paint of his Porsche. Also if you paid attention to the previous shot, there was mask around the headlight. He probably just had to get a quick shot of him applying it and maybe didn't do so, or something didn't work, beforehand. Nice work criticising a professional detailer though.
