I've had flat feet since my youth which resulted in slight inward bending at the knees. I'm 39 and run alot. I used to get lots of back and knee pains. My podiatrist told me to 1. get in the habit intentionally making an arch when standing, 2. land on the front half of foot when walking/jogging, 3. wear proper fitting footwaer and good inserts. All these alterations have made a huge impact.

rosey saz I purchased the Dr Scholls gel inserts. They make a huge difference. My knees were in pain because while running I wasn't making and maintaining a strong postured foot arch which also led to me landing on my foot the wrong way. Never really had hip pain but alot of lower back pain.

rosey saz Yes they do. I tried quite a few brands throughout the years, even a custom pair from a podiatrist, and the ones that work best for me are the dr scholls. You have to find what works for you. Also as I previously stated get into the habit of intentionally arching your feet. Best of luck.

I've just ordered myself some insoles but I've heard not to depend on them and as you say -exercise the arch of your feet. But I've not figured out how to do that yet. Is it when your curl your toes up tight till the arch feels a strain? Or the towel method?

What I learned as a consequence of wearing a support for a curvature of my spine is exactly what this guy says it will make you weaker and now not wearing the support my back is far worse. Learn from my experience, I also have on flat foot and one knee that curves in as a result. Wear the support while you are walking but when you don't need to be walking much do the exercises regularly and walk bare feet. Otherwise it will get worse. Thanks heaps for this video 😊

With your foot dig a hole in sand a foot down, use ever part of the foot to dig. In a downward motion use toes, heal to dig. To scoop use top, inner, and outter parts of foot. You will figure differnt combinations and methods on your own. If dont live near a beach. Get a plastic kids swimming pool fill with sand. Add water to sand for grip and resistance. Or just do it dry you pick. (There other elements you could strengthing your foot with mud, small pebbles, snow, beans.) Dig 3 holes with each foot, keep going till you fill a burn. From your core to your foot differnt muscles will engage during the workout. we are our own best teacher.

One thing that massively helped and is helping me with flat feet is Musculus tibialis anterior training. it is one muscle that hardly mentioned with flat feet issue and exercise aimed just at training base of the foot does not help the actual cause. so i strongly advise training this muscle. theres loads of videos on KZread on how to do that. good luck!

Thank you so much for this video! I will definitely add this to my routine. I’ve been suffering from my ankle joints swelling after standing/walking for long periods of time and it’s gotten very difficult to have a normal routine. It gets difficult when exercising because I can’t be at 100% and I fear that I might injure other muscles. And as I’m growing older, I can feel how my flat feet are affecting my lower back and thighs muscles. So again, hopefully these exercises can help me! Thank you!

I can confirm that #2 technique is definitely correct and even recommended by specialists. I used to do these exercises as a kid and similiar ones like folding a napkin with my toes and it did help to some degree back then. Also #1 is what I've been told to do as well as walking barefoot on grass or pebblestone. Supposedly that helps a lot. Working 12hr shifts out of which I have to stay on my feet for 10hrs is a real pain so I'd suggest using at least some basic insoles to soften the contact between the foot and the ground. After almost two decades I kind of got used to having this pain in my feet and I envy everyone with normal feet. Great video.

The last part of your video totally resonated with me. I had custom orthotics for 5 years. I recently weekend myself off of it because I didn't want to become reliant. Here I am strength training and can't feel my left glute among other things. I had asked my trainer and peers about this. Seemed like I was right and my muscles in my feet/arches have weakend and become tight. You are right that orthotics are a double-edge sword. So tough to fix. I will work on it though. I have signed up for your APT Solution. I totally understand that feet are the main part of getting grounded and working on gait and balance. Long road ahead of me. Thanks!

VERY HELPFUL!!! Thank you a lot! I also wish i would watch it earlier. This actually what kids should watch in school and what doctors suppose to recommend. I killed my feet by working 8 hours a day standing at the register and wearing flats. And when i went to the doctor all she recommended is shoes and compression hoses. It helped for the first week. But then started hurting again. Thank god i have a job where i can seat now and i defiantly start doing these exercises every day. Because, like you said, wearing shoes without exercises doesn't help all the way. Thank you again!!!!

My flat feet and knocked knees have always been my biggest insecurity, and now that I'm in my mid-30's, I'm really noticing the painful impacts it's having on the rest of my body, all the way up to my neck and shoulders. I was told I'd need either surgery or just to wear Super-Feet insoles to fix my problems. But after a few years of wearing them, and nothing's changed, I figured there had to be something I could do that wasn't as invasive and ridiculous as surgery. Thank you so much for posting these videos. I'm looking forward to starting these exercises tonight and am excited and hopeful to see and feel results.

Blake, your videos are really very instructive. Thank you. As you say, wearing orthotics are a double-edged sword. I've had to wear them for years as I can't stand for very long without them (my back starts to ache). I've done all the exercises you show, and roll my feel out on tennis balls in the morning before getting out of bed. Would you recommend trying to walk barefoot for short periods of time if you're doing the foot exercises in an attempt to strengthen your arches? I really never go barefoot, even in my home. Thanks.

Really helpful, especially as I'm pregnant now and my feet are feeling doubly tired due to my relaxed ligaments. I do have the issue with knocked knees during squats, and have in fact a slightly torn mcl in my right knee. I do have knee braces, however I found my muscles getting weaker after long term use.. (after a couple of weeks). I feel that my entire lower half is off kilter, so I have to modify exercise in order to not strain myself. My question is, as I'm looking to ease back into my more rigorous exercise routine after delivery, are there more strengthening exercises and stretches I can implement post partum that would help realign my hip-knee-ankle joints?

Do you mind making a video on how to help support your heels. I feel that i dnt have enough support on my heels. I can not stand very long or else the middle of my foot to my heels start to hurt and sometimes really gets swollen. Im not sure why. Ive gone to the doctors and they referred me to a specialist. I went to a specialist and they said they could give me a cortizone shot but I was also told that cortizone shots arent good to use. What do you think about that?

Besides exercise #1!!!!!(if you have minor weakened arches it may work, I don't know), I really do condone everything he showed in this video. Having been a victim of EXTREMELY FLAT FEET since I was born, every other exercise he shows is extremely helpful! I have done them all in post-op corrective surgery to help exercise muscles I had actually never used before because my "flat feet" were so excessive. However I will add that I wasn't told to do these these exercises until in physical therapy after my corrective surgery for my extremely pronated feet. BUT!! I do very much condone every thing he is trying to express, except for #1 if you have flat feet. #1 will only serve to serve you pain and suffering without any results unless you only have a very, very slight pronation. ALSO remember, consult your doctor before attempting any exercises to get a full understanding of your condition before you decide to take things into your own hands!

This may sound dumb, but If you work at a desk, might try switching your outside button on the mouse to the "left click". This puts more reliance on outside of foot pushing down and helps frame your eyesight to keep forward/framed. Even better if you switch to left hand mouse so domianat hand doesn't do all that work, balances out your proprioception

Oh wow the dexterity you have with your toes on the third exercise is incredible! Is that the norm? Only my big toe has any sort of precision, the rest just follow - and even that takes real effort! My arches aren't too bad but I'm noticing the effects of pronation on my ankles and knees and need to rectify it before I develop real problems. Willing to try these exercises daily as a means of building the muscles in the arches in the hope that I can begin to realign my ankles and knees. Nice video, thanks!

Very helpful. I'm currently working on rebuilding my arches, but my right foot is flatter than my left. I thought it might be, but a physical therapist recently confirmed it. Due to a left knee injury quite a while ago, I've been putting a huge amount of my weight on my right leg which is affecting my right arch. I'm also having lower back pain on the right, so I'll be having therapy to treat my knee, my back and my feet. Yeah, I'm a mess. LOL! I didn't know about the exercise with the towel, so I'll be adding that one to the list. Thanks for sharing!
