Phil, I've applied bathroom ceiling paint to my shower area (Dulux bathroom easy care) and I have bubbling up in one area already only after taking about a dozen showers. I've two fans in the bathroom extracting the steam from the area but there's already a small area about the size of ones hand that has started to ripple. I've dried the area and left for a couple of days and just applied this peel stop to the whole of the area around the shower. Will this stop the rippling or am I wasting my time here? Grateful for a response.

I've just moved into a place where they clearly just painted onto the plaster - masking tape takes off chunks of paint and there's places where the paint is flaking off. Clearly if I just paint it now it's not going to hold to the wall. Would you recommend I use this in the flaking areas and then paint the whole thing with a generic primer? Or coat the whole wall with this stuff? Or sand the paint off to go back to the plaster?

Great video Phil.... 1 room in my house has an issue which I believe is because the mist coat was either not used or something similar... when I moved in 8 years ago I was painting and the old paint was coming off the walls onto the roller in some places... my late uncle done some decorating in his lifetime so I called him and he said it was down to a failed or no mist coat... he said it could be a nightmare to correct so painted it quickly for me. (I honestly couldn't believe how quickly he painted this room) he said the trick was to not let the roller get too dry to prevent it picking up the old emulsion on the wall... hes now passed away and id like to repaint that room. I was thinking I could try to do with a roller I dont let dry out and keep it loaded up with paint all the time but im not confident ill do a good job and may leave too much paint on the walls as I'm use to rolling out paint and then laying it off etc... would you be able to tell me what the remedy for my situation is please so I can paint like normal... someone recently told me id have to use a wallpaper steamer and remove all the paint and start again from fresh plaster with a mist coat etc... is that true😬

I think there is PVA in peel stop Phil you can smell it i think its PVA mixed with a vinyl polymer and probably some other additives. I think the oil based clear sealer does a better job at holding edges down etc but is a lot less convenient. i mainly use the oil sealer for paint scuttles and kettles. even though it say peel stop works on plastic it doesn't ive tried using it for paint scuttles to stop paint peeling and it didn't work at all for that the oil sealer works every time. the peel stop only seem's effective on porous surfaces

@@ProfessionalPainterDecorator thanks very much for replying. It's the gloss paint finish that's peeling. Just in bits where it's crazed and then peeled on a cabinet above the kettle. I've tried to scrape it off but it's stuck on good. I also tried a paint stripper but didn't budge it. So I'm now thinking of sanding a little then applying peel stop and maybe filler to smooth it out prior to the primer and top coat. What's your thoughts? Cheers

I've just started to strip the walls in my living room and the taking the paper off has caused the 3 layers of vinyl paint on the adjacent wall to peel off the plaster. I've taken as much off as possible (about 2/3's of the wall) but the rest just won't budge. Would this method work on the remaining paint layers before I sand and repaint the whole wall?

  • @ProfessionalPainterDecorator

get all your wallpaper off, then soak your wall again where the paint is with hot soapy water a couple more times, that will soften up the loose paint so you can get a bit more off. once you've done that and it's all dry. Use the peel stop to bind those edges down.. you can coat the whole wall up.... then skim over those paint edges with filler.. sand so the wall is smooth again.

nice. im not a P&D... but even i know how to use contract matt, which my builders didnt when i had my kitchen done in the summer. Total donuts.... contract matt really should go on really damp or drying plaster, not on completely dried plaster. So what occurs.. .top coats of paint are stuck to a paint layer that isnt bound to the plaster. You're far better off watering down your normal paint at least 50% on dry plaster. And make sure if it is sanded to clean it up first (which they also didnt do ) As with a lot of things... better to do it yourself... a lot of trades cut corners, dont want to spend the time, want to take your money etc.. Get the pro traders in for the job in hand... never trust a builder to decorate.. ever !

  • @ProfessionalPainterDecorator

Building was a different department at college than p&d... Other side of the campus. I know nothing about building... Totally different trade. Wash coat new plaster with contract Matt, 20-30% If spraying you can go more than that as it needs to soak in. So the thinner the better. Don't use durable Matt paints for wash coating. It doesn't soak in enough and can peel away from the surface. Also no point wash coating with expensive paint. A dedicated bare plaster primer is ideal . Screwfix do one. Tikkurila Optiva Primer is another. Can be used straight out the can, but I still add a bit of water to help soak in more.
