I agonized over trying this fix on my XJ because I didn't want to cut up my cowl, but I got tired of years of having a puddle on the passenger side. In the end I did the following: -I duct taped a length 3/4" flex irrigation pipe to my shop vac so I could suck out all the dirt and leaves that had accumulated around the fresh air intake to have a better chance that any water that ended up there did not get trapped and overflowed that little lip. -I noticed that I could also reproduce the leak if I sprayed water onto the firewall and suspected it was getting in around the blower motor, so i applied a generous amount of RTV where the bottom of the blower meets the firewall to force any water to continue down the firewall. -I replaced the cowl seal, cleaning out the old glue really well, to try to limit the amount of water getting down onto the firewall. It has been a pretty wet winter on the Oregon coast, and so far there has been no leak. Keeping my fingers crossed.

Takes a hour to take the dash out and another to reseal the firewall

Is that the correct way to do it?

Thinking about adding small hinges to the cutout, and putting in a air filter and door keep it in place

If it still leaks check the seal around your blower motor. Common for lower blower motor seal leaks

I've suspected that area on the jeep. Ill have to take the blower motor out and double check that seal.

Wiper clips are the same on a 2000. I don't think that you did a "fix" by taping up the cowl.

KZread keeps recommending me videos on how to fix problems that my XJ doesn't even have... it's been two weeks of cowl leak videos and now I'm checking my firewall carpet for moisture. This is getting ridiculous 😅

OOOOOOhhhhhhh my God! I can't believe how many videos show this ridiculous crap! NEVER butcher any car like this. Do you really think a whole team of automotive engineers designed failures this stupid into vehicles? That drain tub has NOTHING to do with 99% of these Jeep leaks! If you had taken your time to INSPECT during the cowl cover disassembly, you would have noticed the factory tape covering one round and one oblong hole on the leaking side was either loose, damaged, or missing. This is due to years of too much heat around the hood area destroying all soft materials--just like your under hood light and the paint on top. Clean the metal well, dab on a thin coat of RTV silicone around those holes, and apply some thick Rhino-type duct tape over the 2 holes. I put another thin layer around the tape edges when I'm done. That's it--ALL of it. After you let it dry a while to set up, it was really a simple 20 minute fix!!! There is no excuse at all to butcher up these vehicles the way people are doing. SMFH. }:(

I was thinking the same thing. Why are we endorsing cutting the body up which only increases the probability of more leaks! This car IS super janky, but the cure shown is worse than the illness. Gonna try your fix as I think that's the issue.

I agree, why don't they just get a hose in there and suck out the crap. I would NEVER butcher my '92 and have it rust away where I cannot even see it. There has to be another way to fix this, even if it goes behind the dash or something. I would NEVER cut into my '92 XJ.
