One of the best things to use instead of paper are used drier sheets. They are amazingly strong, thin and porous with embedded fibers. They mold into the super glue instantly and to the shape of the object. You can wash them first if you are worried about residual fabric softener.

I use carbon fiber filament strands, or carbon fiber cloth. And you can also use fiberglass cloth. Adds strength compared to paper. Another FYI tip, baking soda is a gap filler and causes cyanoacrylate (crazy glue) to instantly "fire"; bond.

Tyvek is also a good reinforcement fabric to use. Often used in credit card pouches from the bank or reusable painters coveralls.

I used this method on my drill battery case. The internal posts had cracked so it was hanging open. Supposedly, 'irreparable'. Unscrewed all the parts, wrapped the broken posts in paper and crazy glued the paper on. reapplied several coats. Screwed back together. PERFECT! Saved myself $100 in new battery cost. Total job cost: $3. Been using it for months now... THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU!!!

I use dryer sheets after they have been run through the dryer[fresh ones don't stick] The omni-directional strands are far stronger with even less layers.

Great idea ! Even better if you spread the glue out evenly and add a dusting of baking soda it will dry the glue instantly and make a hard plastic like layer incorporated with the dryer sheet with a couple of layers of this it will really add strength to the tab . I used only baking soda and super glue in 3 applications to repair a broken piece of plastic on my cars AC vent mounting tab , just had to sand down a little of the uneven build up and it worked great and strong !

I'm a baking soda/ super glue firm believer!. How do you usually apply yours? I'm definitely no professional LOL

I find using tissue or toilet paper the best. Separate the ply and it sticks to the contours of the plastic much more easily. You can work so fast with. You are so right, this is an incredibly strong repair. And paintable.

Thank you for this. I was able to reattach my bumper on my Mazda 6 with this technique in addition to some JB-Weld plastic bonder. Saved over $1000 as the replacement bumper cover is ridiculous expensive.

TIP: I use plastic screen material instead of paper and results are amazingly strong welds because plastic screen becomes part of the weld when glue gats into the tiny squares the screen provides. Never had one come back for repairs.

Yes that is good. I use a structural epoxy made by Norton. It has a Viper on the front of the dual cylinder tube with the two part mixtures. I use metal screen because it is able to bend and form into whatever position you need and the structural epoxy is thick and will stick to anything. It is black too which is good because you won't notice the repair in between seams or from under the car. I also have stamped out the rectangles of these types of cutouts on bumpers with a thin aluminum and made a rectangular washer with a simple metal shear and put one on either side with epoxy and used vice grips to sandwich it together. I have also done it by heating up the bumper that is broken if the plastic is still all there and I use a propane torch and get it melted and put two metal cutouts on the part where the slit is and I squeeze it again with vice grips and make sure is dries while in the right angle. Then I will use an artist brush and brush structural epoxy on the repair everywhere and make it thick and let it cure then use a Dremel to grind it and shape it to the perfect size. The final and easiest way I have done it is to use cotton balls and structural epoxy and I will literally just squirt the structural epoxy onto the place where the bumper has come off under the rear quarter and I load it up and smash cotton balls that I pull apart and make the cotton thin and fluffy and I just keep pressing cotton into the epoxy and smashing it into the surface of both the place where the bumper covers, the bumper cover, and whatever else is there to attach it to. Just make sure you can smash the bumper in flush and don't add too much cotton puff mixed with structural epoxy. It is amazing what it will do. It allows you to fiberglass essentially to plastic parts. I will just mash in like a handful of cotton or polyester puffy stuffing into the area and use an artist brush to keep spreading more epoxy on the polyester stuffing and it flattens it and makes a bridge or bracket or whatever you call it. Then the final time I just put a very thick dollop of structural epoxy on the thing in between bumper cover and everything else in that area so that it will adhere and I smash the bumper cover on and then clamp it down with a hand squeeze clamp with rubber pads if it will fit and turn on a space heater and point it towards the area and let her rip about two feet away on high. If the hand pump clamp doesn't work you can use a rubber sanding block for a pad to not scratch the bumper cover and find a broom handle or something to wedge in between a wall or a curb or even a stack of heavy brick or a toolbox to press on it where it is flush and the factory wanted it installed. Then wait a half hour with space heater onto it to cure and you will not be having issues with that thing ever again. Rarely do people have to take those back bumper covers off. But the front is a different story. I would not do this to the front. For front I always use the Norton structural epoxy and cut my own plastic to repair anything. Use plastic from scrap parts of cars like under trays and fenderwells or plastic boxes you buy at home Depot if you must. Plant pots also work. They are decent plastic. I like to use plastic scrap I get for free from the local junkyard that comes from other cars under trays. The final way to do this is to put the bumper cover into place and tape it flush and where it is suppose to sit. If you have the access open to the rear fenderwell on the side you are fixing (the bumper cover must be in place on both sides where you want it to stay) then you can use structural epoxy on the seams from behind the bumper cover and zig zag a line on the seam where bumper and fender are. Then either press in some plastic screen, thin wire mesh, Painters tape (this will make you have to cover everything on top of the painters tape) or fiberglass cloth, pink or yellow fiberglass insulation stuff, or even paper and random stuff like a piece of a ziplock bag or a grocery bag cut down or whatever you can find. I have seen people use sticks on the side of the road to fix a falling off bumper cover with a structural epoxy like Norton or Lord Fusor because the epoxy is doing most of the job. The rest CAN act as a place to put the epoxy and a way to make the epoxy cure where you want it to instead of thinking of the object or material used as something that is a splint or a bracket or whatever you want to call it. Paper tape for mud and Sheetrock joints works with thin glues too and epoxy. It just gives structure to the epoxy while it cures and becomes the structure itself. The fastest way if you have room and you just want to go quick is to use the metal tape for air conditioning duct repair and install work. It is ultra sticky and can be formed into any shape and bent and made to contour to anything instantly like aluminum foil. You can use that on any part that won't be seen just to secure it and make a shape and form to put your epoxy onto. Just rough up the spots where the epoxy will be sticking to with 36 grit really lightly and for just a second. It will instantly give a rough surface. Then use the metal tape and only use just enough to stick to the surface you have to work with. You want to use the surface for the epoxy not the tape. So if it is a 2 inch by 3 inch piece missing on a bend make the metal tape 3.2 inches by 2.2 inches and however much bigger it needs to account for the curve or bend of the voided portion or part. Stick the metal tape on and form it, use two or three layers if you have to and do both sides if you have to. The structural epoxy will do the work. Make sure the part just beyond where the tape stops is sanded with a really rough grit paper like 36 or 60 grit at least (the rougher the better, those hairy pieces will act in your favor here) and use a rag and acetone really quick to rub the surface you sanded for the epoxy to grab. Then use Norton structural epoxy and either use the mixing tip to apply it in a zig zag on the tap and overlap onto the plastic by an inch or use an artists brush but make it thick. The structural polyurethane and structural epoxy will both do what you need probably but I would use the Norton's structural polyurethane because it is just the best. Lots of companies make it like 3m, Lord Fusor (Lord Products) even JB Weld and I think even Gorilla might make something polyurethane but it is a much better option that super glue and your typical epoxiea you find in the store. Night and day difference.

Mike! I just tried this on my Mercedes Benz passenger side mirror housing. I took it apart and it snapped at a weak point. I cleaned that baby up with Lacquer thinner and cut two strips of paper the appropriate size. I glued the two sections together first .... then applied the paper on the inside of mirror housing on the crack and then super glued it on top. Mike Incredible man. Solid as a rock. Didn’t even need backing soda to make it stronger. Thank you so much for sharing your wisdom and experience with all of us !!!! U Da Man!!!

Thank you for sharing. The glue and baking soda works great. I take my die grinder and grind down into the crack. Then do the baking soda and super glue then grind down the dried glue and soda. But grind twice down a little for extra strength. Have been glueing everything plastic. Car, truck parts, house hold items. Just glued my refrigerator door handle. And works great. Super strong

thanks for the tip, I just undid the bolts on my rear tail light and it's in the middle of Feb, in Canada, the plastic tab sheared completely into. So in the summer I plan on using this technique to repair that broken tab. Thanks again for posting, appreciate that.

What if you use the blue shop towel? It's thicker than the regular paper towel but stronger and absorbs liquid well. Will it make the bond even stronger?

Ok...call me a skeptic...always have been, always will be. Fixing broken plastic with superglue and paper?? YEAH...RIGHT!! Well, I tried it on a broken bumper end on my 2003 Xterra. IT WORKED!! Really strong...I used 3 coats. Harder than the rest of the piece. Thanks for posting this, SPC!!!

Rather than using your tweezers to smooth out the super glue you can use wooden skewers. For small fine jobs a tooth pick. It just means you don’t have to clean the tweezers or run the risk of the glue drying onto the tweezers - potentially ruining the tweezers pints and the ability to grasp fine objects. Also, skewers and tooth picks are great applicators if you need dab small amounts of glue to a small or thin surface. Don’t just squeeze the super glue tube onto the item you wish to glue as you will easily apply to much. This excess glue is hard to clean off with out smearing the glue onto areas of the glued item that you might want free of dried glue. Visible surfaces or areas involving moving parts are just two examples you might not want excess glue to dry upon.

@@SweetProjectCars thank you for creating the “fix it” content and posting it on KZread. it certainly helped me repair a broken oven door with broken screw spacers. It potentially saved me losing part of my rental bond when I move out of my rental property in a few weeks.

So, I had tried to do plastic repair before, but never with adding paper or any other type of material on the break. Generally the plastic repairs I have done in the past consisted of computer case / cabinets / hinges / etc. repair since that is my line of work. So now in the future if I come across a broken part that needs to be repaired you can bet that I'll be adopting this method!

Lightweight nylon fabric works great too...and nylon fabric ribbon comes in loads of widths. I've actually repaired nylon dryer rollers by wrapping nylon ribbon around the worn side and soaking with super glue/ca glue. It polymerizes well and sets harder than the original nylon. Excellent way to repair nylon or plastic hinges too...think glove box and plastic console hinges. Just put a narrow bead line of petrolium jelly at the hinge line to keep it from soaking up the ca glue.

Pieces of yarn also work. You can flaten it out as you go. Carbon fiber is probably best. Fiber glass matt also works.

You can use waxed paper to apply pressure to super glued work. I glued cracked paint back on my bumper and smoothed it down by holding a folded smooth piece of cloth over the waxed paper until the glue set, then wiped off the excess with 90% isopropol alcohol or starting fluid (ether), I forget which. The paint shop was very impressed with my temporary fix.

Why waxed?

Make sure the surfaces to be bonded are flat and clean. Then heat up an old stainless steel knife until the 'bluing' appears. Simply slide this hot knife between both components of plastic, that you need bonding. Slide out the knife and hold both parts steady until cool. That's Plastic Welding, but it doesn't work well on some softer plastics - such as LDPE or HDPE. ABS isn't bad to weld. Sometimes I remove some plastic from the parent material, and then (with heated knife) butter this in to build - up the newly welded parts. In some cases, the weld becomes much stronger than the original.

I did the same thing on a watch second hand years ago. It was snapped in half so I placed a piece of paper under the two parts and super glued them together wth the paper underneath. I trimmed off the excess and It's as good as new and you cannot see its been repaired.

Great, simple, sturdy, easy fix! Thanks. BTW: I saw a KZread video where a guy mixed baking soda with "Super/Crazy Glue" to fill in small gouges in helicopter blades, and other types of materials. He could do this because, when mixed - then dried - these two things bonded into a rock-solid composite via some bonding reaction between the separate substances. I wonder if this idea might be applicable to what you're doing, here...you know - making the repair "weld" spot even stronger? Just a thought. BTW/FYI: You said, "I can use another piece of paper and make it even stronger...do you get my 'just'...?" Actually, it's NOT 'just' - it's 'gist.' Like, "That's the gist of the whole thing." Or, "That's the gist of it." Anyway... Thanks for making/publishing these vids, and PLEASE keep'em comin'!

After subscribing your channel, I've found this excellent video about fixing the broken bumper tab with super glue and paper. How does the glue and paper work together in the chemistry to make it bond super strong? I am trying to understand about this. I also see you have another video about using the super glue with baking soda as well. I will surely try it when the weather is warm. It's because the body kit of my project car honda civic is 4" above the ground only. One day I hit something that both side of front bumper got popped out and the tab where the bolt goes in is cracked. Thank you so much.

There's a product meant for fingernails that is fiberglass (sometimes it's silk) either way it would be stronger than paper. It's applied exactly the same way.

Thank you for this video it saved me from a stupid mistake I made. The only thing I did different was I used a small strip of medical tape the glue helped keep it in place and the mesh material design soaked up the super glue like a resin with the medical tape acting as a kind of fiberglass mat. Worked perfect and dried very strong which is exactly what I needed.

Mark Southern you will be very hard pressed to break it especially if you do multiple coats of paper

Excellent, I just wished you would have shown more detail after 6:20 as to how the upper and lower panel seams are attached together. It looks like a screw is needed from bottom into top panel on the very end, is that correct? I presume that the repair you did was to allow male and female clips to lock together. Need to do my son’s 2009 Honda Civic panels that have separated like your example. Great video, thanks for sharing your skills.

you're just making a cast for it I did that with a couch a small towel and Elmers glue with the Press clamp get the same thing real cool never knew that for plastic thank you

I'm in the same situation. Broken clip in the same spot. Corner end always pops up a bit after I drive. I work on my car quite a bit and have to remove the bumper a lot of the times. Will this hold pretty well after clipping and unclipping the bumper a few times every couple months?

ryan for the cost of the 10 cent repair it will hold very good, if you want an even stronger hold that is more expensive let us know we have that video as well
