Say Ken. So I just learned something. I have a spare Dietz burner and learned they can easily be disassembled. All you do is grip the top wick tunnel, hold the base, and pull them apart. Mine clicked right off (that gives full access to the spinner wheels) I am brainstorming a double wick modification to the burner for my Jupiter cooker.

I think the double wick would be awesome if you get it going please make a video 👍

As far as repairing the cap I would use gasket materal from an auto parts store and use gasket maker to glue it in. This would make it easy to replace in the future if needed. If the reflector won't polish up, I would just nickle plate it would look cool.

Great idea on the gasket material but for now this is doing its job and easily removable to exchange it out and I actually was able to get a decent polish on the reflector and is looking quite good now 👍

Yeah I haven’t seen many of the beacons but what I have seen they have been painted. Mirror polished would be very cool. I would polish the entire lantern.

Perfect timing! I have an Embury 210 with a half stripped burner, so the wick keeps going crooked up and down. I knew I was going to mess it up if I tried to dissect it - so thanks for the info, I'm going this route.

You can use COMET CLEANSER to clean and possibly shine that reflector. Then if you need to, use a polish. You didn't say if the reflector was ceramic coated or not. Shame manufacturers refuse to make those wick adjusters so they do not fail and can be easily fixed/replaced (the adjuster part). Also a shame they refuse to make them out of thick brass, properly soldered too.

There was no coating on this reflector it was right down to somewhat rusty metal and actually polished up pretty nicely with some Wenol and Flitz metal polish 👍

Love that becan myself. New to lanterns and you're making it an addiction. Bought a few new dietz an a freuhand. I have a few questions. If the font capacity is 31oz can you put 31oz or 80% of 31oz ? Say everything is the same will a cold or hot blast put off any more heat than the other ? I have seen a Rayo lantern cooker at Lehman and curious if it is a far, far cousin to the Rayo you talk about.

Hi and thanks for watching First answer I never fill up my lanterns more than about half way because the fuel could get sloshed into the air chamber and will leak out of the bottom of the air tubes and make a mess and it has happened to me many moons ago when I was inexperienced in using lanterns Second answer is Cold blast lanterns will give out more heat than hot blast lanterns and are also brighter but can generate more odor as well Lastly the Rayo cooker is something I actually don’t have but have seen a few reviews about it and it really doesn’t seem to perform that well either in my opinion and also not a true Rayo because they were out if business very long ago someone is just using the defunct brand name.

Hi Ken. Is KLEAN HEAT odorless ?? I just burn my lamps indoors using Medallion oil..but I would like to use KLEAN HEAT which is cheaper…Should I expect any odor…Thanks

  • @lotsatrains

Hello I would say that the Klean Heat does still burn with a mild odor but it’s probably not any worse than the little odor you get from the Medallion oil but it’s been several years since I used the Medallion oil but I know it’s getting very expensive for this stuff and also the Klean Heat has gone up almost $4 a gallon near me at $17 a gallon I actually am going back to 1k kerosene and just burning my lanterns outside however the hot blast lanterns don’t seem to be too bad at all with just the kerosene 👍
