HOW TO FIX A FLOOR JACK THAT WON'T LIFT OR PUMP ALL THE WAY

In this video you will learn how to fix a car floor jack that won't lift all the way. If your floor jack won't stay up and keeps going down, it is time to get rid of the air in the floor jack and add jack oil as necessary. This is part of maintenance and repair.

Like others I have this same floor jack . Exact same model too . Great video ! Mine made it 11 years without any issues . They sure do cost more now ! I think I paid around $50-$60 for it ! Today they want what we used to pay for the expensive " race" aluminum jacks !

That's the same jack I have currently. I used to have a real nice aluminum/steel low profile racing one. Then I loaned to my nephew. When I finally got it back, it somehow turned into this cheap Pittsburgh heavy steel one. Like magic! Thanks for the video, it's exactly what I was looking for.

Those Pittsburgh jacks are known to be low on fluid from the factory for some reason. When I got mine the first thing I did before lifting anything was check the fluid level. Sure enough it was not even close to being full. Filled it up and bled it and has been working like a charm.

Thanks, but aren’t you supposed to add the oil in the first port that had the plastic plug? My 3.5 ton Craftsman WAS low on oil, but after topping it off through the rubber cap fill port it still must have air in the system because it jumps up with one stroke, but sags down under weight. I tried pumping rapidly with the valve open as stated by the mfr, and it got a bit firmer, but won’t take full weight. Those screws on mine say “don’t adjust,” so I wouldn’t think to add oil through them. I’ll try removing the oil port fill plug completely and pumping with the system open like you did here.

I do have this HB Pittsburgh ( only 5 years old )but it's the low profile model, I have been using it in a regular basis to do maintenance on my cars, everything works fine , it's just that I recently spotted some oil on the floor where I store it and found out that it's leaking from the twin Pistons or from the so call the Ram or the bottle Jack, now I have to figure out how to fix it, I'm kinda disappointed about this HB Pittsburgh Brand because in so little time it failed.

I opened that filler valve and found that there's a spring, a sping cap, and a tiny steel ball that fits into the spring cap presumably to make hydraulic pressure. All of it was out of place. That's why my cheap Chinese floor jack won't work. They cheaped out on those tiny little yet most important parts.

Does the jack need to be disengaged during the bleed process to work, asking since it was engaged later in the evideo? Great video for sure, if I could suggest a re-shoot...using 1 of the 2 tools "needed" and only mostly as a pry bar until the fill plugs later. got me laughing. "you'll need these 2 things" then proceeds to not use them but 2 other tools unspoken. haha. All in good fun, great video! Haven't tried it on my limp jack but I'll be damn'd if it's not the fix. The country saying is there's more than 1 way to bleed a pig but for sure mechanically that's not so true. might not be the "fix alls" but, you either got a good leak (seals and air) or a slow leak (gradual air in the lines) when it comes to hydraulics. Definitely thank you for the simple video, cross the easiest one off first.

I am not real sure what I did wrong on my jack a week ago. I had half the car off the ground and noticed the jack was running out of ooomph as it got higher. I popped off that rubber plug and added jack oil and it didn't work again. It goes up but won't even lift ANYTHING. It has never leaked, owned since new, about 20 years old and looks like new. Mine is similar to this and the first pump takes it all the way up. However - once ANY weight is on, nothing.

Regular WD40 lasts about a week before it evaporates, as it's a near kerosene chemical. It's a Water Displacer (Anti-rust), not a lubricant. Try Liquid Wrench or Specialist Penetrant WD40, for longer lasting lube. Once freed, motor oil or grease is more persistent and you don't have to free it up so often. Once frozen, there usually is corrosion in the moving parts. Full disassembly and sanding everything smooth makes for real repairs. Use regular wheel bearing grease once it's cleaned up.

I have a brand new Daytona jack, I’ve used it once since purchasing it about 5 months ago, went to do my brakes today and it would move up and down with the handle and hydraulic cylinder movement but shouldn’t stay up even with no pressure on it. Tried bleeding for about 30 minutes and same thing. I turned the handle counter clockwise to crack the valve, took the fill port off and pumped the handle 5-10 times until it was just fluid coming out without any air bubble, refilled with jack oil as it was quite low, and continued to do so until it was just flowing the oil out without any air bubble pushing it out. I then screwed the fill port back on and closed the check valve by turning the handle clockwise. What am I doing wrong?

I noticed that as well butI guess he’s just showing 2 steps you would try to see if you can try to fix it. I have seen so many reviews on floor jacks where there are an alarming number of reviewers who say their new floor jack failed after a few uses. My bet would be that in most cases the jack wasn’t air bled before the first use and those who say the “ piston” leaked oil after a couple uses didn’t check that the usually plastic air bleed plug or the hydraulic fluid screws and O Rings were loose or damaged.
