If you're curious, the reason the cell read 0.0 V was because nickel dendrites or filaments have formed inside the cell over time and use, and eventually one or more reached from one terminal of the cell to the other, causing a short. By applying the external voltage from the battery pack to the cell, you essentially burn those filaments like a fuse, and the cell can operate again. No, it's not a permanent fix, but you can try it whenever the cell reaches 0.0V again. Note that if it doesn't read 0.0V, this trick won't do anything. I'd be leery of applying anything over 12V, and certainly only use DC. You always want to be sparing with applying over-voltages, like he said, just a few touches.

I found it convenient to use a 3-battery holder (of AAA batteries) often found in LED flashlights, for this purpose. Three batteries snap into the holder, producing about 4V at the holder terminals. Install two 4-inch long wires at the ends of the holder (wire ends can be pushed under the terminals with the help of a knife tip). The resulting device can be used as a dead battery shocker, in a way described in the video.

I had a handful of rechargeable AA batteries that I had not used in a while and when I tried to charge them, they would just blink red and had zero charge on them. I was about to toss them out, but I decided to give a quick look to see if there was a way to "revive" them from the dead and I came across your video; I used a 12v AA battery pack I had laying around, loaded up some fresh AA batteries and gave this a try; I was able to save all of them though some of them required about 10 taps or so. Thanks for posting this!

I don't know if those particular Amazon cells are rebrand Eneloops but if they are they shouldn't be completely dead. Unless they were already used alot or they may have been left in a device for too long draining the batteries completely dead. I tried to completely drain an Eneloop, got it to 0.3v for about 15 minutes before it jumped right back to 1.2v

the same trick applies to chargers themselves - as long as they "let in" a tiny bit of charge after "denying" your battery each time you insert it. do this several times, sometimes 5 or 6 (lithium ion for whatever reason - like in the case of power tool batteries - will take tens of times, 20, 30 etc). it will eventually take to it.

This didn't work for me. I essentially tried the same by lining two good batteries plus the bad battery up end to end, then jumping an unfolded paper clip from the positive end to the negative end. No dice. But what did work was putting my bad battery in a charger similar to that in the video, stacking a good battery on top of it so they are side by side in the same orientation. Then I used a paper clip to connect the two negative battery terminals with the charger's negative terminal. Then I used a second paper clip to connect the two positive battery terminals with the charger's positive terminal. Almost immediately the charger gave a reading. Soon after that I disconnected the paper clips and the charger was charging the previously bad battery on its own.

How much did it help medium term? Would it have a similar capacity as expected after doing it? Generally when I have done this the cell would drop again to 0 fairly quickly (i.e. days of intermittent use as opposed to previously weeks of intermittent use)

Hello. Sorry, I'm a little late to post this. Can you please explain why double the voltage/capacity is needed the 'shock' the non-working rechargeable battery back to a usable state? I've seen other demonstrations where they used just one other good battery, touched the positive and negative ends together, and it was rechargeable again.

You are missing one important step when testing the battery and that was you did not put your meter under load. Try using the multimeter that has a battery test option of 1.5V; then you will see the bad battery voltage decreases dramatically from 1.2V after you jump start the bad battery. Here is the video that will show you how to test the battery correctly: kzread.info/dash/bejne/epedzdyGd5rTfbg.html

There are several suggestions for battery reconditioning do not try to do this until you know what you are doing - the acid can burn your skin Test the voltage first - there may be a kaput cell which would waste your time. Check the battery fluid. attempt to fully charge the battery. (I learned about these and more from Jons Mender Guide website )

Hi, I have rechargable Duracell batteries, they don't seem to power anything so I left them in the charger for couple of days. They measure 1.4v but still don't power anything (tried in Xbox controller). They did power a surround sound remote, so seems to be low current output I guess. THANKS -- you just saved my CR123A pack of rechargeable batteries!
Thanks for the advice. I watched your video less than half an hour ago & have just saved half a dozen dead NiMH AAs & AAAs. Instead of using your 2 x 1.5V in series setup, I used a single 3.7V 18650 battery and zapped everything back to life. The revived batteries are all marked with a black X so it will be interesting to see whether they develop any problems in the future.

After reviving several NiMH AA & AAA batteries and using them for a week, one of the AAs & 2 of the AAAs died permanently and couldn't be revived a second time. The other revived batteries are working okay but I will keep them under review to see if they again develop problems..

Darth Dog great job. looking forward for your further observation
Thx. Worked perfectly.
Thank you for sharing
This actually worked, thank you.
this one is really useful, thank you.
what a life-saver. thanks
Genius. Thank you!
It works on my dead batteries. Thanks
What’s the name/thing you use to shock the bad rechargeable battery? Where can I buy one? Thank you
Works!!! just do it 10 times 2 secs each time, sometimes if you do it to quick do not works...
Thanks ,it worked for my two one.
Very helpful thanks!!!!!
I think this actually worked... Well done man.... I used my Fluke that worked...
Thanks you SO much for this!
Thank you for the tip! 2 are good to charge, one is dead, better than nothing.
Very helpful!!
great video! big thumbs up
Yes! It worked. You Rock.
That will work, but the batteries will have very high enternal resistance and low Mah of stored energy because they are aged and worn out.

hi everyone ,if anyone else is searching for restore battery try Jons Mender Guide (Have a quick look on google cant remember the place now ) ? Ive heard some amazing things about it and my partner got amazing results with it.
Wow man it worked. Thanks
You made my day, thank you.
the same trick applies to chargers themselves - as long as they "let in" a tiny bit of charge after "denying" your battery each time you insert it. do this several times, sometimes 5 or 6 (lithium ion for whatever reason - like in the case of power tool batteries - will take tens of times, 20, 30 etc). it will eventually take to it.
What set up did you use to shock them? Just a battery pack with testing rods hooked up to them?
Cool! - I've got the same charger - thanks ;)
fantastic bro
U a legend I taped my batteries together one needed to be charged one was ded and it made them both charge
Awsome worked a treat.
There are many types of battery chemistries...does this work on all kinds NICD, NIMH etc?
It would be interesting to mark the batteries in question and see what the service life will be after this test.

+Curiosity thats a good idea. Im not sure which 3 are the bad ones any more, but ill still keep an eye on them and see how long they last.

How did these batteries last ?
Thanks so much for this video -- I was throwing out all the rechargeables that said "null" in the charger. This is so simple and works great! Thanks.
Genius !! Does it work the same way for a Roomba battery regardless of Amperage??
Heck yes!! This is a great technique. I used some clamps and spare pieces of lumber to hold my good batteries together and worked great
yes it works
How much did it help medium term? Would it have a similar capacity as expected after doing it? Generally when I have done this the cell would drop again to 0 fairly quickly (i.e. days of intermittent use as opposed to previously weeks of intermittent use)
Hello. Sorry, I'm a little late to post this. Can you please explain why double the voltage/capacity is needed the 'shock' the non-working rechargeable battery back to a usable state? I've seen other demonstrations where they used just one other good battery, touched the positive and negative ends together, and it was rechargeable again.
I use a trickle charger meant for a 12 volt auto battery to shock my weak nimh batteries back to life.
Thank you so much bro! Bought a 4 pack of rechargeable Phillips batteries and 3 of them had 0 voltage. After applying 5v to them just for a few seconds they are now revived!
What is the name of that holder you are using? I tried looking for it, but all I can see are similar looking holders with loose wires and I'd like to try tapping the way you did.
How to you make or where do you buy that piece you used to "shock" the batteries?
What did you use to combine the 4 AAs?
What is the thing called that you put the live batteries in to shock the 0v ones?
There are several suggestions for battery reconditioning do not try to do this until you know what you are doing - the acid can burn your skin Test the voltage first - there may be a kaput cell which would waste your time. Check the battery fluid. attempt to fully charge the battery. (I learned about these and more from Jons Mender Guide website )
This trick works only with batteries that won't charge at all? What about those which seems to be fully charged but when used they discharge pretty fast? Also, have you tried to do the same thing with 18500 batteries? My rechargable dustbuster works with that kind of batteries
what is the device you used to shock the batteries?
That world for one of my battery, the other wont come back. Thanx for the trip.
Hi, I have rechargable Duracell batteries, they don't seem to power anything so I left them in the charger for couple of days. They measure 1.4v but still don't power anything (tried in Xbox controller). They did power a surround sound remote, so seems to be low current output I guess. Can I do anything with them as they are 2450mah NiMH that are pretty useless but we're expensive.
Can I use a 12volt car or other lead acid battery to "shock" and 'wake up' another type of rechargeable battery?
On small batteries you can also do the same with a 9V Alcaline battery and a standard clip on😀 connector
Is there a limit to how many times you can do this? And if so, is it just gonna become apparent when it's no longer salvageable? Like leaking or bursting or something
