What do you do if the hi-hat opens and closes but the pedal doesn't stop in place when the hi-hat is closed??
Thank you, me and my dad were trying to fix it for about 10 mins and then I searched up your KZread to see of you have done a video for it. Thanks Mike!
Thanks Mike! I was so sad because I thought I had killed my high-hat but thanks to this video I figured out my rod had come unattached. So I took the tube off and reattached. Good as new! 😊 You help me so much on my drumming journey. I am super grateful for your videos and all the great content you share. Going to buy you a coffee right now.

I was literally on my way to the store to buy a new DW 3000 hi-hat stand because my pedal was going to the floor. I decided to check good old KZread first, and found your video. I had already checked the clutch but I did not know about the rod coming loose, so spun it to the right, tightened it up and all is well thank you so much!

Mine had been moved around and didn't snap up unless the bottom and top parts moved together. I ended up fixing it with brute force after noticing the cymbals were too low, pulling the middle section up sharply. It had evidently accidentally been pushed down too far and something slipped past its proper position. Maybe now I can get at its guts and figure out a way to prevent this from happening again.
Thank you so much, simple quick and clear. You are amazing!

Hi Mike, i tried both of your tricks and it works intermittently, sometimes it will be fine for a song and other times I need to keep adjusting the the hand turney thingy, and it’ll just keep closing and I’ll need to open it again, happens multiple times a song. Any advice?

Tighten it a little more than you can with your hand - using a wrench or similar. If still coming undone, probably time for a new one!

@@MikeBarnesDrums you're welcome. What are the cymbal stands you are using? Sabian or any others?
A question on assembling the clutch. Mine is very similar with two rubber "grommets" that the top cymbal hat is clamped between, (mines a Mapex clutch). I also have the two chromed, knurled screw clamps and the black plastic bottom screw clamp as well. Pretty much the same a yours. Is there a right and wrong way to assemble the clutch? From the top going down I would have the rod clamp, then a chromed knurled screw clamp, then a rubber grommet then the top cymbal, then the other rubber grommet under the cymbal, then the other chromed knurled screw clamp and finally the at the bottom the black plastic screw clamp. I find this arrangement having two screwed clamps at the bottom, prevents the bottom from coming loose. But am I wrong in doing it this way? Cheers me dears. Great stuff as always.

Thanks, that's my hi hat fixed, easy
Hi there I'm perplexed. I did everything as it should but when i press the pedal both cymbals move up and down together. I'm at a lost.
Thanks man. My high hat is ok now.
I think I figured out what's wrong. I'm using the terminology I saw on one web page. It seems like the rod isn't moving independently of the inner tube. I think it's too tightly connected. I tried loosening the rod. It turns (with a pliers), but never gets loose enough to actually function properly with the pedal. I can physically (and with effort) move it up and down inside the inner tube with my hand, but not with the pedal. Am I supposed to lubricate the inside of it? When I force it, it sounds scratchy.
@MikeBarnesDrums

Hard to say without seeing it, but yes maybe some WD-40 would get it moving?

@@MikeBarnesDrums Thank you for replying. I finally figured it out (sort of) literally last night. My daughter was fidgeting with it and partially unscrewed the rod. I didn't know until I caught her doing it again. For whatever reason, unscrewing it all the way and taking out the tube it goes through, then re-assembling them fixed the problem. When she hangs out with me, she's no longer allowed to sit behind the drums! LOL!
I love you tysm

I'm a newbie, so I'm sorry. I had it set up and working fine. But suddenly a few days ago the pedal and everything collapsed. The bottom moves up and down now too, no matter what I've tried. I tried both of your solutions: The clutch seems fine. The thin rod thing seems tight. But when I use the pedal the whole assembly goes up and down. The bottom and the top just move together. I know it's something obvious to someone else, but not to me. Can someone help me out?

Get a new clutch that doesn’t undo itself? Or (very carefully) put some superglue/gorilla glue or similar on the thread so it stays gripped once done up.
My hihat rod is loose but it is connected to the pedal, Im turning it but it doesn't do anything, and the clutch is all fine.

Is this not the problem and does doing what I demonstrate in this video not fix it?
You might think that finding this info is easy. It was not easy to find for me and this is like one of the few clips that even goes into how to "build" the hi hat. And i did not find it when i was looking for it. Partially due to the title being how to fix a brokenhi hat. I needed to assemble the hi hat. I still dont know for sure but i managed to get it working to a point that it does the job. Is it correct? I have no idea. I cant ask Natal either those chumps. Natal, is a british drum company that manufactures drums. I emailed them asking for assembly instruction and they told me they had no instruction booklet to offer me on how to put my kit together. I asked them if they say the same thing to people who buy their kits new. His response was, yes. They offer no instructions on how to put your newly bought Natal kit togeher. Sheer madness. Stay away from Natal is my suggestion if you are new. They wont help you

What’s the problem?
