Mike, I'm realising I'm a snail learner on the drums and I don't know why.. Watched your "How Long does it take get drum Grades video (Feb. 2021) Can you clarify if according to Trinity guidelines, it takes only 12 hrs of guided hrs and 48 hrs practice? to take you from ZERO to grade 1 standard? I've been learning for a year and a half (with a break for a broken shoulder) and I'm still pretty uncoordinated and nowhere near as fast as the RockSchool grade 1 . Do some people just take longer to get up to speed on the coordination? Any advice for this? Thanks so much. Love your work!

My best students are the ones wanting and willing to go through the books, not just the easiest 3 to cobble together with rough technique and not a big eye for reading detail. Unfortunately not enough have such a work ethic.😅 It seems like the coasters can scrape through to grade 4 rockschool with that attitude but reckon 5 will be their undoing. I'm going to take them back to grade 2 slipstream onwards and fill in some gaps ! Still think that's the best one of that grade😆

Great video, great honesty, great value to me. Even for us who say “we know it’s hard but we have to keep persevering”… no matter how addicted to drums, everyone has a day or two where they get frustrated, put the sticks down and come back to it tomorrow. But sometimes that’s what makes it stick!

It's one of those intros that you just have to 'feel'
@MikeBarnesDrums2 күн бұрын
Yes, although that doesn’t make this fill different from any others - “feeling it” is always important I’d say, even if we’re also using reading/counting to get our head around it. One of the central themes of this channel is that IMO drummers don’t need to choose between feeling it and reading/counting, they’re both great! And can be used in conjunction. Cheers for watching.

Thanks, glad you dig. And ha, get asked about that quite a bit these days. Football, running, hiking, v basic “bro split” with weights or resistance bands. Just like drums, you don’t need fancy systems or methods, just show up and be consistent, train hard and results come. Cheers.
