HOW TO FIT A SIMPLE SOLAR SET UP TO A VAN... fitting roof bars and wiring up solar panel.

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

How to fit a simple solar set up to a van, fitting roof bars and wiring up solar panel.
This is our simple diy system to get off grid solar power in our DIY campervan conversion, that turned out to be a bit of a van build nightmare!! Another build video to add to our van build series.
We had planned to make it changeable for the future so went with what was meant to be a super simple solar set up... perhaps it was the 32 degree heat but it certainly wasn't as simple as we had hoped!
In this video we fit the roof bars, the solar panel and the victron mppt charge controller.
It's a very long vlog for what turned out to be a longer than expected task but if you have found this video, or any of our van build series videos useful then please consider subscribing to see where we take it now we can travel a bit more freely again!

Awesome. again my sides are killing me the banter and chemistry between you two 10/10. well done getting it done in the heat!!! looks good to me mine are fitted to rhino roof rack. also good having it raised as it lets air circulate around it, panels don't like to be to hot. gotta love free energy!!

Blue sky, something shining in said sky, oh what a difference to today which is freezing grey and miserable. I can remember that lovely sunshine and heat even with my poor memory. Note for the camera crew “ffs stop pi**ing around! Do your job as I love a good hissy fit and I missed it coz of you”. Second note for camera crew “that physical activity malarkey is cod’s wallop. Prior to the invention of C19 the NHS was full of peeps who did that and they ended up in hospital. Why do you think they recommend it? Simples - It keeps them in a job”. Now that they appear to be a little busier and not in need of the business you don’t hear them going on and on about it do you? Lovely video and I really felt for you on that roof. I was meant to repaint the steel roof on my narrowboat last summer but I decided to stay in the shade and think about how to do a good job. I took the process so seriously I’m still thinking about it😁

Hi Lou and Em, thanks for the very informative videos, and the very simple way in which you explain that a van conversion isn't that scary. As a bloke I admire your "reading the instructions" because I always seem to throw them away with the box, so in future I will pay more attention and read first. Once again thanks for the videos and I fully intend to follow your lead on my build, btw AJ looks adorable.

Hi, I had a similar dilemma with my fiat Ducato, solar. Bought the corner fixings, £25, didn't fancy glue, especially as the ridges only provide fifty percent surface area. I imagined it blowing off at 70mph. My solar is about the same size as yours. I bought roof bars, like yours, then got some solar panel mounting bars and fixings, used three, running from front to rear. Fixed solar bars using rivnuts, under the roof bars, bolting through roof bars. Then mounted panel on solar bars. I then made a sort of air fin and mounted at the front to divert air. Result being panel sits low, parallel with roof bars. Looks neat. Just an idea.

Thanks Joe, ours is working a treat so far, was really worried about drag but we don't get any! Maybe as we have the skylight right in front that does enough of a job of acting as a wind deflector. Thanks for the tip, we may rearrange our whole roof set up at some point in the future. Thanks for watching 😁

I totally felt your frustrations there Louise, some jobs give you one problem after another. And fitting the panel to see how it performs first is very wise, exactly what I'd do. Can I suggest not using Unistrut on the next phase though, i know its convinient but it weighs a fking ton. You can buy box or L sections of aluminium that you can bolt together with brackets. Check out Humble Road on YT, his vans are outstanding like Gregs. He did a cool aluminium roof rack on his current Promaster build. Well done great job ☺

I started mine last year by making and fiber-glassing aluminium brackets onto my fiberglass roof, I still haven't got around to putting the panels on. I do that much driving ( split charging ) and don't live in it that i found out that I don't really need them 😆 I could have saved £400.00. Saying that, I'll probably appreciate them when/if I do fit them. On this van or a new build? 🤪 Anyway, you did better than me 🤣 Great you got it all done 👍👍👍 Oh' I know how awkward doing stuff like this is on your own lol, up and down a ladder all day 🔧🔨💧💪😆

Great job, it looks like it will last . Personally i would have fitted the gland first but you don't want to hear that now lol. Also you sure you don't need a rubber grommet where the pV cables come in to protect them from wear? Its funny fitting solar for me was one of the least troublesome and taxing part of my build (Which btw is almost done only have kitchen tile splashback to do and I'm done! woohoo although I am wondering if I even need to bother with a splashback tbh) Although I did only glue my panel to the roof and what you said about it only bonding to the paintwork has worried me a little trouble is I had no other choice has the my Transit had no fixing points like the citroen does. Ah well heres hoping.

  • @campervibe

Yes, I'd be better off with rubber grommets lol, I forgot them, I'm blaming the heat. I'm going to try and split them and slide them up from underneath. Lots of people just glue their panel on, I'm sure it will be absolutely fine. I couldn't do it that way as my panel is so wide and sitting across the width of the van that those corner btackets wouldn't have fit anyway. Congratulations on the near completion of your van 😁😁 hope you can get out to use it very soon 😁😁👍

Yours just seemed to come together really quickly and really nicely. I’m going for a shower room so I’ve overcomplicated it, bet I never even use the thing. Think that’s what I would change if I started again. Strange thing about lock down is, I think it’s made me slow down too much. Can’t wait to see how your solar works, I went for 2, 160 watts from the same company, so I’m really interested in how yours go. Looking forward to your next vid. 😀
