How to fit a Cavity Closer

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Windows and doors on new builds need to have an insulated cavity closer fitted before the windows are fitted. If not a cold spot can appear when it’s plaster boarded. See how to fit one.

These modern cavity closers are a woeful piece of modern kit...making the fixing of windows and doors within masonry openings susceptible to poor/loose installation. I got my local BCO to agree on the old way of closing the cavities in my new extension by closing the cavities with block work...a lot better.

Thanks Sam, I’m a retired chippy and want to increase size of our windows and wondered these days how a cavity is closed off, have seen others on here who haven’t bothered, but great job Sam will be following your example and also subscribed

Hi Sam came across your video on how to do it as never done this b4 plus im then installing my own windows. your video was really good and taught me what i needed to do. I will be fixing it with gorilla glue to hold the cavity closures in place i hope that is enough to secure it

Yes nice one, if the block or brick is straight the closer should sit well on them and stay in place

Great video, thank you. I’ve come across a job where the windows are installed but no vertical dpc or cavity closers and they have mould spots on reveals. Is it ok to retrofit cavity closers after the window has been fitted? Will be really disruptive to remove window frames.. Thanks again for the great videos

Jonathan Hamilton you can look at retro fitting a cavity closer but if there is enough thickness on the window frame you can fix a 22mm insulated plasterboard and skim it to blend in.

What do you do when blocklayer has left out the bottom block on the outer leaf for window cill to sit in. Do you have to cut a piece out of the bottom of the cavity closer to allow the cill to slot in?

I have these on my build but some tradespeople have raised concerns. Usually, the vertical dpc covers the small gap between the block work and window frame. With these, what stops damp travelling from the external render to the internal plaster through the gap between the cavity closer and the window frame? Thanks

Hi des, well for one the window is sealed so no water should be coming in, 2 there is a cavity so moisture won’t cross. If any moisture is tracking across the plastic you have a problem, the closer is to stop a cold spot forming as the closer is insulated .

newry123 no there should be a cavity tray above the window and the closers are plastic so act like a membrane if fitted correctly

Hi I'm looking to change my old aluminium windows on a old home. What would be the required steps to make sure cavity is sealed before fitting new windows on these old houses?? Would you recommend installing cavity closers or insulation foam around the window cavity before fitting or is there another procedure? Hope you can guide me in the right direction. Thanks

just had new windows fitted and it appears theres a fair bit of a draft coming from underneath the window in. Should i insist that they make sure this is attended to before signing off on the job and, if so, what should they be using to do this? also, as i did not know of this capping product prior to them fitting the windows...and the house was built to heck knows what standards back in the 1840s for one half and the 1990s for the modern extension, i now have some voids to 'backfill' (mostly the new part of the house) at the point the cavity has been exposed owing to the depth of the new windows being thinner than the original old wooden ones. I have also been left with gaps around the interior edges of the windows behind the sealent thats been used round the exterior edges of the windows. Whats the recomendation to fill these? I take it i wouldn't want to use anything solid like 'gobbo' where the cavity is concerned....expanding foam...any particular type? Good vid by the way!
