How To Fish The Hitch For Salmon

In this film Peter McLeod examines the intricacies of fly fishing using the hitch method. He discusses the techniques with one of the guides from Laxa I Kjos in Iceland before demonstrating how he fishes a pool using this method. Finally he hooks a salmon using a hitched tube fly.

    Nice video Peter, I particularly like the session on the first pool that showed how much work can go in to this. So many videos make this thing seem easy but persistence paid off. I often think that in Scotland we don't persist enough with the hitched fly.

    Thanks so much! Agree entirely, you have to sometimes cover the fish multiple times to finally get a response..

    I fished the hitch first time last year on the north esk and hooked a couple of salmon , lost them both unfortunately but then fished it on the tweed in late October and managed to get one on the hitch roughly 13 lb . Amazing way to fish for salmon .. fished for salmon near on 40 years and it’s by far the most exiting way to fish 🎣👌

    Salmon fishing in Norway is often a challenge, you can put easy 70 hours of work into the river until you get a strike. Hitching has become one of my favourites - not only because it works - but you can watch the fly searching the river and it's not too exhausting if you use a switch rod. Helps a lot to stay optimisitc!

    I am still not understanding which of the two side holes at head of the tube to insert my leader into depending upon which side of river I am fishing from.

    You should mention which side of the fly to tie the hitch on. I use the Lee Wulff method of pointing the eye of the hook down river and tying the hitch on that side it gives a small vee with no bubbles it’s one of the most important things when fishing a hitch. I don’t use tube flies but I think it would be the same

    Hi Lou, Thanks for the comment, would agree when using singles, with tubes it does not matter so much... although most tube manufacturers these day put holes on both sides just in case....

    Is the fly fished with the fly lying on its side with the hook bend aligned with the hole where the leader comes out? So the leader comes out on the bottom and the hook bend in the same direction as the leader hole? Thanks.

    @AardvarkMcLeodFlyFishing

    Hi, normally the hook will remain at right angles to the hole the line comes out of. The line comes out of the ‘side’ of the tube..

    When he says no bigger than a size 14, what are we talking about, single, double, treble? I don't know of any single hooks smaller than a 14 able to not bend to a salmon. Anyone wanna point me to one??

    Steven I normally use singles these days as I actually think they hook up better… for strength saltwater hooks or carp hooks are best…

    Lee wolf popularized the hitch in Newfoundland. Most Everyone uses when wet fly fishing in Newfoundland except when we use a dry fly bomber
