HITCH FISHING for Salmon and other Low Water Tactics. PART 1 Salmon Fly Fishing Ireland
Спорт
In this video Salmon Hitch Fishing in Ireland, Fishing Micro Flies and Fishing Sunray Shadow for Salmon.
Salmon Fishing on the Fly during the summer low water conditions can be challenging. During the month of July I faced very low conditions during few of my sessions and applied new to me low water salmon tactics. I have learned plenty, discovered how successful fishing the Hitch Flies for Salmon can proved along other methods. During this video I am sharing what I have learned in the process.
Salmon Flyfishing on the River Blackwater can be exceptional at times. Even in summer low levels, salmon fishing on the fly can be very effective with the right methods applied.
In the process, I have been improving my Spey casting methods, namely the Snap-T Spey Cast you will see in the video and also the Single Spey in the form of an Underarm Single Spey Cast.

Some beautiful scenes on a great salmon river. I laughed when you were quietly speaking to your last salmon, encouraging him to give up and surrender to your net. I could hear you were out of breath from fighting the fish but also out of fear of losing it. I could see myself as I have done the same. I also fish flies but for steelhead in western Canada. There is nothing like skating a fly across a pool and watching a dorsal fin come in behind your offering. My first few times I snatched my tiny mouse imitation right from the jaws of one of the few fish that agreed to come out and play. I have spent many freezing cold and frustrated days on the river but when you finally bring those beauties to the net, we'll there's nothing quite like it. Cheers on a well thought out and enjoyable channel.

Thanks for the nice comment Barney. I respect steelhead fishing, it's the game for the big boys 🎣🎣 would love to do it some time
I wish my river looked like that in low water!

Well done Marcin, good to see you release those beauties back to the river, brown trout, and seatrout fisherman here, love a crack at a salmon.

Lovely and very informative video Marcin. In low water I sometimes fish micro hitch tubes off a 10ft/3m #7 wt single handed rod. I arm the tube with a Veniard sea trout treble - usually size 12. They hook really well and are very light so don't drag the fly under. Best wishes and tight lines. Phil.

Nice video... and unlucky, just not to be that day. When hitching I prefer a small double rather than a treble as I 'feel' that double hook holds better than micro treble.

Good tip! The small trebles are a pain
I've just watched this again - great fishing and really bad luck that so many fish you hooked came off. I've now started to fish the hitch with a 12ft 9in #8 wt plus an AFS 7/8 with floating leader on the business end. It's lovely to fish with and I'm hoping to do well with it on the Spey in June. Best Phil

Thanks Phil. Best of luck. I need to work on my hook set when fishing small hitch
Hi Marcin, Nice Video. You did at lot right because you hooked a lot of fish. You can improve your hook-up to catch rate by using a reel with a better, "gentler" brake. The rod you are using is perfect, as it is not a stiff poker, but a nice medium fast 8 weight spey rod. I would not change that. If possible, use just a litte longer leader or a longer, thinner tippet section which allows for more stretch. I use Maxima in 10 or 8 lbs and it works just fine. Try to wait a second or two longer before you lift into the fish. Let the fish turn with your fly before you set the hook. Hope, this helps...

Hey Mick, amazing, thanks for the tips there. Clearly coming from a very experienced salmon angler. I did notice later in the season waiting the second or two longer does help. The tricky part is to have your nerves in control!! :) Tight lines

@@MarcinKantor Thank you for your nice words. You are quite sucessful at this early stage of a salmon flyfisher, my honest respect! Glenda is a nice person and a good teacher, too. You are a good fisherman, I saw some of your other videos! Nice! What I like most is the way you prepare and change your stile of fishing (fly, leader, depth, presentation), when "Plan A" does not work. That is important! To loose some fish is not uncommon in salmon fishing, nor is it a shame. Believe me, even the most experienced flyfishers loose fish. What I do to prepare and to get my trouty "dry fly strike reflex" better under control - before I fish for salmon in June and July - is to fish wet flies for trout with a 10 feet 4 wt some weeks in advance. You will improve very quickly. All the best to you and your family!
Very well done

Thank you very much
really enjoyed that Marcin and well done on trying different tactics, especially the hitch which is one of my favorite methods :). That was a pity about losing that last fish, always the worst when you lose them 'at the net'! One thing that works for me when netting a fish on your own is to get below the fish and allow the current to bring the fish to you, rather than trying to draw the salmon to the net. Looking forward to part 2 :)

Thanks Andrew, I eventually managed to land a couple in the end. Thanks for the tip, will do that next time I have the opportunity! Do you fish micro hitch usually or larger hitch too?

Hi I’ve been really enjoying watching your videos keep up the good work. One thing When you were fishing the hitch it looked like you were threaded through hole of the tube for the right hand bank while you were fishing the left hand bank. This might just have been the camera angle making it look like that. Anyway even if it was it was still working!! 😂

Good tips!! What about you recommended for me if a lot of salmon are stuck in the pool quite a shallow pool but they are very active and jumping of the water? Very clear water also.

Try all you have up your sleeve. I'd definitely chance the hitch at the start, and go deeper. Perhaps a nymph later if possible to use it

Do you use a tapered leader or is it just polyleader to straight tippet
@MarcinKantor

Floating poly + a thinner than normal tippet
You should not lift the fish out of the water if you are doing C&R
Fantastic information how long do you have your tippet when you use the hitch method please may I ask . Tight lines from England

I had it at 6-7 ft with 10ft of floating poly
