Caught a 28 inch pike out of my local lake (some would call it a pond lol) using a half ounce swim jig with a kicking trailer. Just swimming it along, letting it get caught up in some grass and pop it out and bam, get hit. Another pike I caught doing the same thing wasn't very long, but it was a fat one. And then got a pretty decent one last night as well with a chatterbait that had a senko worm trailer.

Th key imo to fishing a jig properly is to understand you're not fishing the jig- you're fishing the trailer you put on the jig. A jig alone will very, very rarely get bitten- no one fishes them this way, it's the trailer you put on it that is gonna decide whether or not you get bit and how you need to fish it. A jig was simply made to add secondary action to a plastic- primary action is like the action of the bait flapping, swimming, etc.- but the skirt when it moves in the current while the jig is sitting still, when it flares and rolls while moving it- that's secondary action- it mimics the scales of a fish glinting, their gills moving, a craws appendages shaking and moving as it swims, etc. That's why it catches larger than average fish- because these are the fish that are very picky- they look for that secondary action to determine if something is real or not. So first determine what it is you're trying to mimic- bait fish or crawfish. If you're fishing a normal jig, not a swim jig, then it's probably crawfish so- think craw fish colors and pay attention to water clarity- the more stained it is the darker the color you need. Move it on or close to bottom like a crawfish moves- I like to just crawl it over the rocks and maybe every once and awhile give it a little pop, pop off bottom and let if fall back. Look for rocky bottom that's where crawfish hang out mostly- or around cover like brush piles and laydowns. If you're fishing rocky bottom you want a football head jig, the shape of the head doesn't get caught in the cracks as often- if you're fishing wood or something similar then a pitching jig or Arkie style head works best- if you're in thick grass then a punching jig with a pointed head works best. Pay attention to fall rate which is controlled by the weight of the jig and what kind of trailer you put on it- also pay attention to whether they want something with lots of kick or something that just sits there basically. It all seems more complicated than it really is- jigs are actually pretty simple. There are just several different styles and tons of different trailers so, it's a deep rabbit hole if you want to go down it.
