This was a big help! I've been replacing the lines on my M-16 scow (sailboat). This will complete the new 7/16" main sheet. The bigger rope is SO much easier to splice than the 1/4" stuff.
This is great! Thanks so much!
I thin the core starting at the third core mark, carefully removing nearly half of the strands, but being sure not to disrupt the braid by removing too many strands from one pull. Thinning the core in this way leaves a much more flexible eye loop for attaching a snap.
Thank you!
Can you make a video how to actually put the popper on? A very hard time after doing this to get a leather piece through! Thank you!
If I’m making reins and I’m do the end splice like the end of the lead in this video. How much rope will I use@. I want to make sure I have 8ft reins when I’m done.
Can you please describe how to actually put the leather popper in the end?
A back splice is only to stop fraying and requires no strength or stitching. As such it is easier to do it with 1/3rd of the dimensions used here. A short fid length (7 X the diameter of the rope or 70mm for 10mm rope) for the extraction point and half a short fid (35mm) for the second mark. The 3rd mark is not even required as all you need to do is exit the fid from the core at a point that is longer than the short fid length of the cover that will be inside it (most people can estimate a minimum of 7cm's). Using these lengths will make the splice easier to do and waste less rope.

As one who splices I agree. However in order for us to be certified by Samson rope company we have specific guidelines we have to follow. We have Samson certified splicers on staff which means they had spliced rope, sent it to Samson, it met their requirements as far as working load on splicing. I agree depending on the application, you are correct! Great comment, Thanks!!
When making the eye splice for lead ropes, I have noticed some of the newer leads are more flexible in the eye in order to attach snaps more easily. It is as if the core is removed in the loop which forms the eye. If this is the case can you give guidance on how to do this?
Do you have any tips for doing this with 1/4 inch rope? I get to the end but the cover doesn’t want to go all the way over the end because it is extremely tight.
I was wondering if you could do a video on splicing the two end ropes of a rope halter into one?

Me too!
I seem to be using extra 14-16" not 7" for my backsplice... is there a way to cut that down? Not sure what I'm doing different.... but i have followed your directions...

Tabby, hey this is Robyn from CBKnopt...We usually on a class one eye splice use 1.5' extra. However their are cheater methods (we call them) - which for some trainers we do, however for a class one in order for us to keep our certifications we have to do it with the additional footage:(
Why would I want to do this to my ropes..???
