How to Find Ursa Major (Big Dipper) Constellation

Ursa Major is one of the most important constellations to know because it points to so many other star patterns in the sky. For those that live in the northern hemisphere, this star pattern can be seen all year round. It is classified as a circumpolar constellation. Ursa Major contains the asterism known as the Big Dipper, and it is one of the most recognized star patterns in the world.

the planetary nebula within ursa major (called owl nebula) is magnitude 9,9 whitch is fainter than some of the galaxies found there, that's another misconception about galaxies being generaly fainter, in fact planetary nebulae are often just as faint in this case you're better off trying to find the nearby Bode's galaxy than this nebula

Escaped salves from the American south used the big dipper to make their way north. They made up a song called "Follow the Drinking Gourd", which can be found on youtube.

These stars are used in Chinese 'Purple Emperor Astrology'; also possibly known as the 'Seven Rishis' in Vedic scripture. The Callisto myth reminds me of the Freudian Oedipus Complex. Alas I live in the Southern hemisphere where these stars are invisible; the Southern Cross adorns our flag and that of our neighbour NZ. The Brazilian flag is most impressive.

Hi This is a great video. The big dipper is of great significance to Hindus. The 7 stars of the big dipper is called "Saptha Rishi Mandal". Saptha for seven and Rishi for Sage. I will not get into details and you can pick up the information in Wikipedia. One of the Saptha Rishi is Sage Vashista and his wife is Arundhathi. He is the 6th of the 7 stars. They were supposed to be an ideal couple. Even today, during a marriage in south Indian community, one of the ritual is for the priest to point out the Saptha Rishi Mandal , the 6th star which is Vashista and a companion star to the couple so the couple can stay united like Vashista and Arundhathi. I understand it is very hard to see the 2 stars separetely . Mizhar and Alcor are these 2 stars. Mizhar is Vashista and Alcor is Arundhathi. We did the same ritual when we got married 35 years back.
