Learn the Sky

Learn the Sky

Welcome to Learn the Sky! My name is Janine, and I want to share my love of astronomy with you.

This channel is for anyone who wants to learn how to find the constellations, stars, and celestial objects in the night sky. I also like to mix some ancient mythological stories since it helps us to connect the past to the present. I am a self-taught stargazer that spent 12 years living on the Big Island of Hawai'i, which boasts some of the darkest skies in the world. Hawai'i is where I learned how to navigate the sky.

My day job includes being a middle school science teacher. I've taught just about every science, including astronomy, biology, marine science, geology, chemistry, physics, and human anatomy. I earned my BA in Environmental Biology and Geosciences from Lafayette College and my M.Ed. from Lehigh University. I also volunteer for NASA as a Solar System Ambassador.

My goal is to encourage you to go outside, view the stars, and share your experiences. Keep looking up!

I feel lucky I am able to see these stars (and clusters) most nights because a lot of these commenters wish to see crux. Fun fact 1: southern cross does not set in New Zealand. Fun fact 2: the pointer stars point to crux right? Go the other way and you’ll end up in Scorpio (well, pretty close). I would like to see North star because we do not have a southern equivalent. This is the first video I have seen of yours and am keen to view more thank you.

I live in Ecuador, tonight the stars were particularly bright... So I started to look to the sky to see if I was able to recognize any constellation. I wasn't, then I saw your Crux video and immediately saw it. Then I could also see Centaurus and the Pleiades. Thank you very much, it was beautiful

This video does not even mention how time must be considered regarding right ascension. Earth spins. Therefore, every star's right ascension changes every minute? Is right ascension somehow fixed? Fixed to what? If not, how is the coordination between astronomers achieved? "Let's see the star that will be at XX declination, XX right ascension, at 17:35 UTC"? Also, the figure shows the ecliptic does not coincide with the declination/latitude pattern. How that influences the location of any celestial body that travels that path, specially the ones that have a retrograde movement? Still unsolved mysteries.

Facing Arcturus and looking to the left you will find Vega and between these stars you will find Hercules and Corona Borealis two faint constellations but whenever the nights are clear I try to go out and with the camera get at least a couple of pictures of CB together with other constellations. Thanks Janine.

I understand why Polaris never appears to move on a given night, but does it move (at least just a little) as Earth travels around the sun? There is a significant distance between Earth's positions between, say, the summer and winter solstices.
