I don't understand why is it that y was given as the subject of an equation, you solve for the same y in the same equation, but get a different expression for y. If f(x) = y and f^-1(x) = x, then we should be solving for x rather than y when attempting to find the inverse of f(x).

For inverse functions, if f(x) = y, then f^-1(y) = x. I will use a simple example. Let f(x) = x + 3, we can set f(x) = y = x+3. To find the inverse, you can solve for x. You would get y-3 = x = f^-1(x). As a final step, you need to change the y to an x. The inverse would be x-3. If you leave it as f^-1(x) = y -3, that wouldn't make sense. x is the input value for the function and y-3 has no x.
