How to Find Hen of the Woods Mushrooms in Fall.

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

It's that time of year again, Fall mushrooms in Northern Indiana. Particularly Hen of The Woods, also known as Maitake Mushroom, Oyster Mushrooms, or by it's scientific name Grifola frondosa. I have heard some people call this mushroom a Cauliflower Mushroom, However, this is not a Cauliflower Mushroom (total different species). This is my favorite wild mushroom and they can be fun to find. Every fall throughout the United States you can find the Hen of The Woods Mushroom. In Northern Indiana, I can start finding them early September. In Southern Indiana, I found them in October. I'm sure it depends on when the first cool early fall nights start in.
I typically locate these mushrooms at the base of Oak Trees with not so thick ground coverings (weeds). Even though I have found these mushrooms around healthy looking Oak Trees, I more often than not find them around dying Oaks, Oaks with Dead limbs, Fallen Oaks, or even Oak stumps.
These Mushrooms obviously grow on the ground so they pick up a lot of dirt, sand, sticks, bugs, slugs, and other things. I demonstrate how I clean them and get rid of bugs outside the house instead of in the kitchen sink.
