How to Find Crown Land: Overland Map Tutorial

Im often asked, How do I find Crown Land?
On today's tutorial episode, I walk you through how to find Crown Land for recreational and overland use.
Living in the vast and beautiful province of Ontario, Canada offers adventure seekers (and nature loving introverts) endless possibilities for getting away.
From some of the popular, universal tools for location seeking like Gaia GPS and Google Maps (satellite imagery), the government of Ontario makes available, free for use, the Crown Land Use Policy Atlas (CLUPA).
Besides a comprehensive and adjustable layers of map and satellite data, the website offers a searchable "features" database, for locations such as beaches, cliffs, craters, water falls, mountains, rapids, springs and many more.
Each geographical region offers a comprehensive policy report outlining the intended use and details of the land as well as management direction and (most importantly) recreational activities and facilities.
What is and is not permitted is clearly outlined.
With the combination of this CLUPA and the Backroads Mapbook Layer for Gaia GPS, I outline how to find and save those paradise locations, mark them, route to them for your own personal enjoyment!

My screen recorder failed to capture the search feature drop down list for some reason. Have a look at the 11:55 mark to see what I mean. Its a powerful tool you need to check out!

10:09 When satellite imagery sucks, paste the coordinates into Bing maps. You will be amazed how much better it can be. Thank you for your awesome video!

Great tip! Yeah, I do this and Google maps as well. Satelite data definitely varied between apps and region. 👍🏻

The CLUPA map really needs better updates. As I found out, what is marked as Crown Land is true, but won't indicate if it was sold or leased to a local government for their use as a Park. I showed up at a spot only to see signs indicating a change in ownership with "No Camping" signs posted all over the area. In a different area, the local businesses did not like the fact that campers weren't staying at their campgrounds and lobbied the government to change the land use and, again, "No Camping" signs were posted while I was there and got kicked out. CLUPA doesn't handle either scenario well.

This was a great guide to using the policy atlas and Gaia. I’ve tried a few times but just get frustrated lol. My patience is kind of low for online mapping. Thanks for this. Merry Christmas
