You've just reminded me, omg! Random story time! I didn't see the Little Mermaid in full until I was 15 and I could recognise the chorus of "Part of Your World" but I'd basically never heard the song, so for a long time I actually thought "Somewhere That's Green" and "Part of Your World" were the same song. It made sense to me cause, ya know, mermaids don't see much grass. That was the logic behind that strange assumption.

I am going to be in the Little mermaid jr. and I was going to sing part of your world, and I have an alto to soprano range but I want to sing in a mezzo voice but I just can't belt the end. I really want to be Ariel, but it could be too high for me to belt. (Keep in mind I'm 12 and this is for the kids camp at my community theater.)

how do you feel about girls trying out with guys songs? I'm an alto and I do have some songs in mind (There's a Fine Fine Line, Maybe This Time, Nothing, etc.) but I like the way my voice sounds with Stars from Les Miserables. I'm trying out for Beauty and The Beast and Belle is a mezzo part so I'm a bit iffy, but I also am grateful for any part I get. Thoughts?

Hilari Parsons Hey Hilari! 💕 Depends on the audition situation, but in almost every case I'd recommend against singing a male song. Additionally, the personality/musicality of the song doesn't fit Belle. But that's just my opinion! 😊

I'm gonna share my recent audition story in hoping it helps someone else! So I was auditioning for Fiddler On The Roof and I spent FOREVER trying to find 2 songs for the audition. They needed to be contrasting, show off my range and still suit the character (I was going for Hodel). So first I picked Home from Beauty and the Beast, because the slow sad kind of mourning is very similar to Far From The Home I Love, which is the song Hodel sings, and I had recently sung it at a recital so I was very familiar with it. I spent more time trying to find a second song, because it needed to be more uptempo and show more of my upper range (which Home didn't). I looked up shows that the composers of Fiddler had also done together, and found She Loves Me, which I had never heard of, and picked Vanilla Ice Cream because it seemed fun. FUN FACT! When I showed up to the audition, a girl was singing Home to the creative team in the other room, and I automatically knew there was no way I could sing Home and still get the part I wanted. Sooooo I changed it last minute and performed God Help The Outcasts and Vanilla Ice Cream... GOOD NEWS! I still got the role of Hodel :D

Thank you, Emma!! And welcome to the Theatre Thursday Fam!!! 💝💝 Learning about Musical Theatre is a big hobby of mine. I read a lot (both books and internet). A good way to gain some knowledge: play the Wikipedia game. Start with a show you like (for example, CAROUSEL) and then start reading. Once you hit a link on a composer/show/actor/etc. you don't know or interests you, click on it! Then keep going. Also, KZread. Lots of KZread. I always click on suggested videos (Show People with Paul Wontorek on Broadway.com is one of my favorite series)
I love your channel so much! It's super helpful and you need more subs :)) I was wondering how you personally play the villian? I'm currently playing Mrs Hannigan and tips would be great! xxx

You're so sweet, thank you! 😍😍 i'll talk about it more in an upcoming video, but the main thing about villains: they don't realize they're the villain. In their own minds, everything they do is perfectly justified. Like, they're rarely being intentionally evil--their own ideas/motivations just go against the main character's. (If that makes sense haha) And congrats on Miss Hannigan!! 💕

Hey! Thank you so much and welcome to the Theatre Thursday Fam!! If you love the song and feel great performing it--go for it! If you're open to switching songs I would def recommend "When You Got It, Flaunt It" from THE PRODUCERS (other good options include other Sutton Foster rep or other "funny and hot" girl roles--like "Suddenly Seymour" from LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS)
4:00 OMG! So funny! I'm watching this video because I am in fact auditioning for 13!
What would you recommend as an audition song if i’m auditioning for Marta in The Sound of Music and i’m an alto?
How convenient I find this video the day I find out what show my theatre program is doing this year
Omg I love Disney and I did Little shop of Horrors with my musical theater program and never realized that 🤦🏽♀️😮😲
So at my school we’re doing Into the Woods and I want to play the part of Red Riding Hood, Cinderella, or Rapunzel (preference in that order) and I want to sing Santa Fe from Newsies starting from “let me go” so I don’t have to curse. Because it’s at school. And I can’t curse. ANYWAYS I’m not sure if it’s the best. I’m a girl, and it’s sung by Jack Kelley (a boy) BUT I’m very confident while singing it and it’s right in my vocal range. I love singing it. What should I do?

This made me happy because I'm auditioning for Audrey in December, so the shout-out to Little Shop was great.
Hi Katherine, I was just wondering what type of song would you reccomend when auditioning for a musical like In The Heights? I have a theatre camp to go to in a week and it's mainly about musicals by Lin Manuel Miranda (All they told us is to come prepared with 16 bars of a musical theatre song)
I’m auditioning for Annie the musical tommorow and this really helped Wish me luck 🤞🏻🤞🏻🤞🏻🤞🏻🤞🏻🤞🏻🤞🏻
Hey Kat, I know this video is kinda old now but I’m auditioning for legally blonde JR and really want Paulette (or Elle but I personally think I am more suited to Paulette) and I need to pick an audition song that isn’t from the show. It says to prepare a ballad. It doesn’t specifically say 32 bars but I’ve auditioned for this theatre company before and usually the audition song maximum is 2 mins. I’m thinking along the lines of kindergarten boyfriend or a section of I won’t say I’m in love because it gives me similar vibes to Ireland.
hey katherine, im new to ur page but im obsessed. Ive always been really big into theatre and writing, but terrified of being on stage. That kept me in the "behind the scenes roles" for most of my life. Ur page has given me a new strength, reignited my passion that i didn't realize died out a little. I want to audition for anything, to kind of help me get that fear out of the way, any suggestions? The people i have performed in front of (usually accidentally) say i should go for it. But i dont know where to begin, I want my dreams to finally be realized. even if that just means having the courage to face my fears.
Hey Kath! Know this video is old but I’m going out for an ensemble member, and was wondering what kind of songs to choose for that?
I can’t believe I’m just seeing this now 😂 I wish I had these tips a month ago. I would have sang something from Hello Dolly for an audition if I knew this. Then again the auditioners were two 13 year olds 😂 I love this video.

How do I choose an audition song for a new musical written by a new composer? I have very limited info on the characters/composers, so I’m not totally sure how to proceed. I know it’s a strong female with a legit-style score- any ideas? (I need to find an up-tempo and a ballad). Love you Kat!

This is my first year in musical theater and my school is putting on a production of Once Upon a Mattress. I'm auditioning for Princess Winifred, even though I know I won't get it because it's my first year. Hi is Cups by Anna Kendrick ok for an in addition? It's the best song that gose with my voise. I have 2 days to find and learn a song I'm auditioning for a play but along with my lines they wants us to sing witch I do ok with acting for addition but singing is not my thing but they're making us anyway .
I'm planning to audition for The Greatest Showman in June. The thing is, it's weird and basically, as long as I sign up I will definitely get a part. But I have to have an audition so the casting directors can decide which character I would be best for. I'm probably going to do A Million Dreams from TGS or Waving Through A Window from DEH, because I can sing both of those fairly well (though I'm not a good singer at all lol)
Thank you so much for this! I have an audition on March 10th and I still haven't found a song or monologue 😅 The show is high school musical JR (meaning ages 7-18) what song do you recommend? They said you can do a song from the show but I don't want to be that one person who does the same song as everyone else.
My middle school has an extra after school choir that you audition to get into. Do you think That Would Be Enough from Hamilton would be a good song? I auditioned last year and did hear some Hamilton, but not this song in particular. Love your videos!

What songs do you recommend for auditioning for Something Rotten, my son is 15 not quite fully developed voice so low tenor/high baritone right now. Also has some killer comedic timing. His choreography for anything he is cast in will need to be modified (he has muscular dystrophy. So he really needs to highlight his two best assets strong vocals and comedic timing

I have a question. Should you use, like, “group numbers” if you’re auditioning for a single person? For example, “group numbers” like In from Carrie or Seize The Day From Newsies, that have the whole group singing them, or should you choose a song that is a solo song from a musical?
Should i sing a disney song for a disney audition?
Hi, I'm going to be auditioning for Chitty Chitty Bang Bang and I'm thinking of doing "A Step in the Right Direction" from Bedknobs and Broomsticks. And I was wondering if maybe it's too repetitive or maybe too childish? I'm 17 and I really just want ensemble part, but I still want to do well in all parts of the audition (though I'm most nervous for singing as I'm not much of a singer tbh)
I really like your videos, they're very helpful. You should do a video of you singing.

Thanks, Maddision! 🎉💕🎭 It's mainly a joke, but I sang a little bit in today's video if you haven't already kzread.info/dash/bejne/npd9xsexetLIosY.html&lc=z12xfv2jvobpwh5g404cj3nygtaajl4rm50
Katherine Steele, I'll be auditioning for Peter Pan at my summer theatre camp, and would like to shoot for the main. I have a strong head voice but I can sing alto, and I should sing an upbeat song. What do you suggest? Thanks!
if i was to audition for carmen from fame the musical what songs would you suggest to sing i’m a belter any suggestions would help it’s for my last school production thanks :)
I also have a question for you. What if you’re auditioning for a Frank Wildhorn Musical like Jekyll and Hyde or Dracula the Musical and you’re auditioning for the role of Lucy (Jekyll and Hyde) or Mina (Dracula the Musical)? What should you sing?
Hi! I’m pretty new and just subscribed. I’m an alto belter and my school is doing Mamma Mia, one of the few musicals I could actually belt. I would LOVE to get Donna, as they picked the show for a girl to specifically play Sophie. I’ve loved it since my childhood and i think I’ll be crushed if i don’t get in. My schools theatre program is really competitive and they are casting approximately 12-15 kids. I was thinking about auditioning with 25 bars from nobody’s side from chess, heaven help my heart from chess, or always starting over from if/then. If you had any tips about song choice or nailing the audition i would appreciate it! Thanks
i hope you see this! i am auditioning for fun home and am hoping for medium alison. i am 20 years old, a mezzo/belter, and am stuck on finding an audition song. i have watched your videos over and over and over again (and actually took notes on them), but i am still stuck. the director wants us to pick a song that displays our vocal abilities/acting abilities that is not from fun home itself. i am wanting to sing a song that is similar to 'changing my major'. do you have any suggestions?
What song did you audition for Christine Daae?
