UPDATE: Didn't get in, sadly, but on the bright side I did nail the high notes in the audition room. I think my look just kinda made me stand out like a sore thumb amongst a couple of other things. HOWEVER...not letting this get me down. been binge-watching your other videos because I want to figure out more about my type and what I can perform so I can go for roles/sing songs that suit me better! Since I bleached my hair blonde it's definitely changed what kind of parts I can play. I'm trying Heathers again now that I've gotten back into theatre and am working on my technique.

My only audition was like 2 years ago and I wish anyone would've told me what it would be like because I went in knowing nothing and left crying because I felt like an idiot. I will definitely take this information with me to the next one.. thank you Katherine!! I love your videos so much and will probably continue to reference them through my time in college and beyond attempting to be an actor💕💕😄

This is such a godsend. I've only really done one audition outside of school, and looking back, I'm pretty sure those were some of the 5 most embarrassing/awkward minutes in my entire life.😅 (Didn't get the part, needless to say) I do have one or to questions though. They may be super obvious but I'm going to ask them anyways.😂 First, talking to the accompanist is the first thing to do when you walk in right? Like you would go straight to them? And second, when would you normally turn in your headshot/resume? The community theatre in my city doesn't require either and often doesn't have an accompanist, but I want to be prepared if I would ever venture on to large opportunities/companies that do require that type if thing. Thank you so much for your videos! They are so helpful to newbies like me, and you are such a fun person to watch! Thanks for blessing KZread every Thursday!

I've found that being younger directors always try to ask me questions, shake my hand and try to get to know me. I feel that they (sometimes, not always.) try to get more invested with kids and younger actors

I learned a bit of this at an Auditioning For Musical Theater Class- it was weird because we were all tweens or younger and she was talking about addressing your pianist...

okay, so quick auditiony question: I have an audition for Jo in Little Women next month. I really want to sing Sweet Liberty from Jane Eyre, but the only instrumental I can find is an out of tune piano. would that be a distraction from my performance or should I not worry about it?

Introduce both at the begging 😊 - “Hi, my name is Katherine Steele. I will be performing SONG TITLE from SHOW TITLE, followed by a monologue from SHOW TITLE by AUTHOR”

Hi Katherine, loved the video! It was so helpful! I was wondering if you thought that saying "just follow me" to the accompanist at an audition was rude? I usually just sing the first line of my song to give the accompanist an idea of the tempo but I've heard some people saying this and it just felt kind of weird and a bit rude to the accompanist, but I could just be over thinking it. What do you think?

+Rebecca Hey Rebecca! I recently sat in on some auditions--this particular accompanist (and many others) don't love it when auditioners say that. It can come off a little rude, but it's mainly unhelpful. They're already following you, they just need a road map--singing a few bars for them and pointing out any tempo shifts should suffice! 😊

I had my first audition this recent Monday for Heathers at a theatre other than school productions and THIS WOULVE BEEN SO HELPFUL AGH!! They said "make sure your music is the right volume and then slate" and i was like - "what.. sorry slate?" and i knew i blew it there then i continued to have a shaky terrible voice #regrets

Another thing for pianists make sure that your sheet music is double sided. I got scolded at my first audition for my music not being double sided and it freaked me out so I didn’t do as well as I could have.

My nightmare audition: It was the Lion King, I was in 5th grade. It was my first audition. Ever. The first thing we did was learn the dance. They asked who had dance experience.... everyone raised their hands except me and one other girl. It was so embarrassing! Oh well, we moved on and then we did a group dance for the judges. A girl next to me went left when we were supposed to go right, bumped into me, and I fell. The casting lady wrote something down with a head shake. It probably looked like I tripped over my own feet! After a long time, the dancing part was done. Time for singing. My forte. We sat in a group and went up one by one. I was feeling confident. I was called up. I gave my slate, and then cued the pianist. She played... and played... and I had missed my starting pitch. The music kept going and I awkwardly tried to sing but it fell apart. It was horrible. After that, we gave our monologues. I gave the first half of my monologue. It was fine. I started the next half. I sneezed, and then I forgot everything. It was so bad. I went home and I never wanted to audition again. I got over eventually , and now I really enjoy theatre! Idk why, I just wanted to share this nightmare of an audition
