How to finally master the French R sound

French has a few tricky sounds, but the French R is a challenge for most English speakers to
pronounce. English doesn’t have a sound like the French uvular R, and in this video I explain
why it’s so hard to pronounce. There are a few tricks you can use to start practicing with the
French R. Let me know in the comments if they worked for you.

    My French teacher in high school explained exactly how to do it. She said to just pretend you’re gargling but without water. Simplest explanation and it worked.

    Dear Kay Muldoon, After spending, as a young person, a short time in southern France I came back gargling my “r”s. When I noticed this I shared it with my friends. They agreed that it did make my French sound authentic but that they themselves found it too difficult. My answer was to practise it like they might practise anything else.

    Always thought when I was a kid hearing people speak French that the uvular R was reminiscent of gargling, but I offended people when I pointed it out so I kept it to myself. Thank you for the confirmation. 🙏

    not really all chinese dialects have the r sound. if ur referring to the language most people speak in China, that is Putonghua, or Mandarin. The Chinese have lots of different dialects so not really all dialects have the sound. (Cantonese doesnt, at least)

    THANK you. I'm learning German, nor French, but they use the same R so this was very helpful. I can do every other R, trill, tap, and retroflex, but I couldn't figure out the stupid uvular r. I was just using the tap R for German up until now. Again, thank you so much for making this video! It helps a lot with my pronunciation. I'll have to get used to using the Uvular R so it doesn't sound awkward, but it'll be a whole lot easier now that I actually know how to make the sound!

  • @TheTravellingLinguist

    @TheTravellingLinguist

    It's kinda close! The h in English we produce by restricting our vocal cords (with no tongue interference) but with the French R, the back of the tongue brushes against the uvula. :-) The French R is between the English g and h sounds (at least where we produce them in our mouth).

    In Canada we have a stereotype of the Scottish people that they "roll their R's" like in the Tim Horton's commercials where they have a "Roll up the Rim to Win" contest. This French R sounds very similar, but no one seems to mention this similarity. Or is this Scottish R a completely different sound even though it sounds similar to me.

    You grew up with the French R, but everyone who didn't constantly hear it when they were a kid now have to learn in later in life when it is harder to learn sounds. I think it's like how French speakers can't do the American or even British R (Yes, they are different.) yet to me it is very natural and easy to pronounce the American R. It just depends on the sounds you grew up with, unfortunately. D:
