How to fill a shape with an image in Inkscape
Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль
How to fill a shape with an image or crop a photo to a shape with Inkscape. Please note that this is an old video (circa 2015) and that Design Space desktop app now has pattern fill. Reposting the video to show how to use clipping in Inkscape in general or for those who might be creating files to use with the Design Space iOS app.

4 YEARS LATER, THANK YOU!!!!
THANK YOU!!!!!!! I just spent the last hour trying to follow a different tutorial from someone else trying to do what you just taught me to do in less than 5 mins! I only wish I could have that hour back 🤣
I think this has been the most informative video I've seen on Inkscape yet!!
Thank you for sharing! I have missed your videos - it is great to have you back!!! 😊👍🏼

How nice of you to say that. This is actually a repost of a video from 2015 but I have some new ones in the queue so stay tuned!
I'm just another grateful Inkscape user. Finally useful manual with a simple but working method.
This tutorial is amazing and simple. Tysm!
I never would have thought it can be achieved with Object - Clip - Set. Thank you!
Thanks you excellent little ditty that does a lot!!
Thank youuuu.... You're awesome
That's great tutorial! Is there any way to "enter" particular shape and edit something within (i. e. drawing, writing, adding another shape or bitmap)?
Thank you so much!
OMG THANK YOU SO MUCH! I've been looking everywhere bout how do I create a new object between an image and a shape. In Coreldraw I can just click on intersection, but apparently I can't do the same with the intersection in Inkscape (In inkscape it only works between vector and vector). Once again thank you!
Hi Kay, great tutorial, thank you. Quick question: At 2.20, I notice that your DS has Basic Upload and Vector Upload. Is that an update for DS, because I don't have it and I'm not being prompted for an upload. Thanks x

Sarah this video is from 2015. DS has not only changed in the upload interface (it autosenses the file type now as you probably know) but it can also do pattern fill. This is really only applicable to those using the iOS app as it still doesn't have pattern fill.
Thank you ma'am.
Awesome tutorial, very helpful, thanks! Just wondering because I can't seem to find it anywhere, is there a way to add a stroke to the filled shape?

Good question. I don't know of a way either, other than duplicating the shape on top with no fill and the stroke you want.
Thanks so much
Great tutorial! Just a question, you can do this in Design Space by uploading your photo as a pattern, does working with Inkscape has advantages that you choose this method?

This video was made before Design Space had pattern fill and was reposted in answer to a question by someone not using a cutter. You could still use this method if you needed to make a shape for someone who was using the DS iOS app. I've edited the description to avoid confusion so thanks for your input.

CleverSomeday oh now i get it! Thanks for your tutorial though!
Thank you for great video. Can you also make a video to insert multiple images in letters please. Thank you ❤️
Thanks, very well explained, but doesn't work on my laptop (Windows) apparently.
Hello, I am trying to figure out how to make a PNG graphic in Inkscape. I want to use already made SVGs. I am needing to take the SVG that is solid black (its the state of IDAHO shape) and put an SVG on it like a canoe but i need the canoe to be see through like a PNG. do you have a video on this or can you make one? :) I am using the file to engrave and cut on a laser. Thank you :)

Sounds like you need to find some introductory resources on bitmaps vs vectors and the Trace Bitmap function in Inkscape. Once you have that understanding, everything else will make a lot more sense.
thank you...
This worked very well, but I'm trying to add a black background behind the letters and when I go to print the project the box of the letter with the fill image turns black, you can still see the letter, but the whole box around the letter is black, this happens when I put the filled letter over the black background, separated from the black background it prints fine. Any ideas as to why this happens?

This is probably one of many print bugs in Inkscape at play. Try saving as PDF or exporting as PNG and then print that.
Thank you You Saved My Ass.... LOL Subscribed
Thankyou
Hello Clever, thanks for the video, I just subscribed! I use Windows, but the clipfunctions doesn't seem to work at all. I tried everything: selected everything, put the background on the bottom, reset preferences, ... what else could i do? Nothing happens.

I just checked and everything is still working for me. I suggest you Google how to use clipping for the specific version of Inkscape you have in Windows 10 and see if there's a bug or different steps I'm not aware of.

fills are changed in Inkscape by clicking the color swatches at the bottom of the screen.

Oh I tried that but it didn't really do anything.Thank you for helping at least! I'll try again tomorrow
It’s easy with text, but what about a letter you import, how do we fill it with a pattern

Path>Trace Bitmap to covert it to a path if its not already, then do the same process.
When I set to clip my image disappears. Am I missing a step??? Pretty new to all this

Wish I knew what I was doing too cause mine does the exact same thing. Just disappears when I set clip so idk what I'm doing wrong

Put the letter or object to be filled underneath the pattern. Once you place the letter where you want it, go to the top bar and click lower to bottom, select both then object, clip, set

@@cleversomeday thank you for your response. It is a a vector shape. I figured it out. I needed to combine my paths.

@@FarmDad great! and thanks for reporting back as that may help someone else
Wish you would have used an actual shape instead of text because this won't work with my logo.

trying selecting create a clip group instead of set clip. When I tried set clip it just went white but creating a clip group worked.
You don't need a fill (or a stroke) to set a clip using a letter..
