Your reaction to a large attack is based on what kind of music is playing: If it's rock music with japanese lyrics, you can probably just catch the weapon with one hand. If it's epic orchestral, you can block it. It might push you down onto one knee, but don't worry, you'll be fine and it'll look awesome. If it's mostly choir, roll across the ground like a madman because it'll definitely kill you if you don't.

Also, anyone who specifically choose and carries a very large heavy weapon is very likely to know how to use it in close in surprising ways... I spent years training on a 5' long Ram Dao, equal length in blade and shaft, with the tsuba dead center. It was capable of being used like a spear, a glaive, a sword, a staff, or because of its thick spine, a long bludgeon. My favorite way of running it was in a low guard, inverted, similar to how you would hold a garden rake. Surprisingly quick and powerful strikes come from that position. And yes, like Matt said, you can transition very fast to other orientations. The goal is to keep the motions, big or small, defensive or offensive, in a constant circular motion, to preserve as much centrifugal force as possible for the next cut. And there are many ways to prevent someone from getting inside your guard. That's one of the primary benefits of running a larger weapon, not just reach, but control over the space between, always trying to force your opponent into that sweet spot where your weapon is most effective. But perhaps the best use of the very large tool is the ability it gives to be successful against multiple attackers in ways that a one handed blade simply cannot do as well. But yes, get in, or get out, decisively. Because blocking is not a good option. Best bet is to dodge, then immediately bind or grapple at the end of the swing, where momentum has stalled, and pull the large blade past you on the side, then go to furious work with your shorter blade. Hands are a great target, simply because a two handed weapon is a liability one handed. Offend that which offends you most...

Billhook or spear resting over the shoulder closest the enemy and hand right up at the butt translates to a thrust with 3.5m reach if you pivot on the lead foot and allow it to run out to the full one-handed extent. If you carry on the pivot it'll recover very easily too. A one-trick pony, but really catches people by surprise.

Another option from the Dussack handbook: When you slip back, chop at the top of their weapon. On a really lucky day they might stick it in the ground. On a normal day with repeated attacks they will get tired and each time they pick up their massive chopper they will be a bit slower. This might provide another chance to charge in.

Something somewhat related that I have often wondered: Speaking realistically, how could a supernaturally strong warrior in a fantasy setting actually leverage their strength effectively in combat? Aside from the obvious answer of grappling, what would be some ways to really get some mileage out of being vastly stronger than your opposition? This is a pretty common scenario in fantasy setups, where the answer often is "Get a bigger weapon." I'm wondering if that is actually all that useful. If you're a good deal stronger than regular men, and can be almost certain that any human-sized opponent you run into will be a good deal weaker than you, what'd be the optimal way to leverage that? How should Hercules or some other hero like that actually fight?

Two handed weapons, Crushing type bludgeoning weapons with a multi-faceted head like a mace. One of the biggest issues of crushing type weapons with a multifaceted head is that they don't often instantly kill/cripple opponents with blows to nonvital areas unlike slicing/thrusting/smaller headed bludgeoning weapons that concentrate force into smaller areas for deep cuts/penetration/armor breaking. Having an enormous amount of strength would easily push the threshold of a random blow from a mace from moderate injury to severe or crippling or even life ending. The same strength might be wasted on a sword for example, it doesn't take superhuman strength to cut through a limb so having that extra bit of strength is essentially "wasted". At the same time, this takes advantage of the advantage of a multi-faceted bludgeoning weapon, which is that you can hit with any part of its head and deal damage to opponents both armored and unarmored. So essentially, super strength makes weapons like maces able to kill basically anyone, armored or unarmored, while if you had the same super strength with a rapier/axe/longsword etc they would all have some kind of hard counter in armor. Also, a bludgeoning weapon like a mace is far more durable and likely to survive your super strength, assuming we aren't using magical materials and just ordinary steel.

I was at the studio one day and we had a random guy come up trash talking us. He ended up picking up a tree limb ( friggin huge one ) and rushing at myself and several of the other students. My teacher had heard us at this point and come across the yard and the guy took a swing at him with the tree limb. My teacher only had his bokken, but we watched as he stepped out of the way of the limb and let it hit the ground in front of him. Then he stepped on the end of the tree limb, took a few steps along the limb, and disarmed the guy. It was one of the most amazing things I have ever seen in person. It all happened so fast! My teacher then called the police while making the guy sit on the grass and wait. People are crazy, but I will never forget that. It was a David v Goliath moment and just goes to show you the true strength of skill & discipline.

  • @winsunwong5648

    @winsunwong5648

Its because having such a long weapon closes off the line of thrusts from most other weapons to the hand, essentially its incredibly hard to thrust down the blade of a greatsword to hit the hands without getting hit first by the greatsword. Therefore the rings only need to protect against cuts coming in, and the ring essentially provides a large steel plane of defence for attacks that aren't thrusts.

From the experience fighting against huge (and fortunatelly padded) weapons, I would say there is a way to do this (yet it sounds quite complicated) You should move away, but raise your hands as if you wanted to parry the blow. However you don't really parry, but deliberatelly miss with the point of the sword and bind their weapon on the false edge/blunt part. You redirect the blow slightly to the side so you can slip under the blow with step forward. It is super important to keep the bind and control their weapon. Since it is heavy object, it is rather difficult to get it back online. You should not give the oponent a chance to do so. Then you grab their front arm with your left hand and stab them repeatedly to their belly. This is not fool proof solution, there are multiple ways for them to break from this situation, but till now I believe this is the most efficient way of dealing with heavy weapon. (please note this works mostly against weapons that cannot effectively stab. It is rather easy for a skilled fighter with a long/great sword to get the point back online, in which situation you just stabbed yourself with the opponents blade...)

Where you void against their strikes, suppress the weapon, and go in.

I could say so much about this, but the best advice is probably something I heard from some retired bikers I once shared a table with at a favorite old watering hole. They were reminiscing about fights they got into (presumably in the 60s of 70s). The topic of some guy famous for bashing people with a baseball bat whom one of them eventually beat up. His rule of thumb was "when the guy swings a weapon at you, it's his, when he pulls back, it's yours." Aikido is currently much maligned on the internet, but as an art primarily designed to work unarmed against a sword, and they are tops not only for training how to get out of the way, but also when to get out of the way and when to come in.

Thanks for your video Matt. You have no idea how relevant to real life are your advises. Here in Israel, in the town of Elad, there was tonight a brutal terrorist attack in which 3 people, innocent civilians, were slain with axes, and 4 other were wounded. The two that managed to survive the onslaught by the 2 terrorists were two friends that were attacked while they were drinking hot soup in their car. One pushed one of the terrorists and managed to grab the axe haft, the other one threw his cup of boiling soup in the terrorist face. Both terrorists then run away - the security forces are still chasing them. Both young men wrte slightly wounded, but managed to save their lives, by eather creating distance by any means- boiling soup in this case, or closing the gap and grabbing the axe shaft. It's all the way in, or all the way out, and being aware of that is a must in every self defense scenario. Anyway, may the souls of the people murdered today be blessed, and may the brutal murderers be caught and punished

Good advice Matt, personally I would move in as the opponents weapon is being raised, grab the butt of the weapon and push it up above your opponents eye level. This has the effect of preventing the downward swing as the axis of rotation has been moved back behind the shoulder, it will destabilise their footing and if your opposing arm is used it will stop your opponent from spotting the rondel or stiletto being slipped under their ribcage! If a longer weapon is used then slipping the blade up between the opponents arms and using a pull stroke at the crook of the elbow to sever the brachial artery would also work.

Unlike other fantasy beasts, if I were large and strong I wouldn't be swinging a huge weapon, I'd be swinging a regular sized weapon really fast and hard. Wield a greatsword like an arming sword. Wearing full plate the same thickness as a man's, but sized up for my bulging green muscles. While every loincloth troll is swinging cinderblock hammers like a clumsy sack of potatoes, I'm making a name for myself as the fastest troll in the west.

MOVE! Is a primary doctrine in Japanese Jujutsu (and kenjutsu, bojutsu, ...). Never be in that one square foot of real-estate that your attacker wants you in. MOVE, preferably off-line of attack. We even have a walking kata whose function is to get you moving as on-balance and efficiently as possible. It's fascinating how reality based martial arts have very similar principles. Mostly, I suppose because there are only a few ways to do thing correctly and if one's techniques weren't functionally, they didn't live to pass on their techniques.

Momentum and inertia are both weapons and weakness. Once the trajectory is set on a 3m tree it's very hard to change. Also scaling up objects doesn't necessarily scale up the speed. They will swing at the same speed, but have more distance to cover, and take longer to swing. But Matt's advice still holds. 1. Move 2. Stay out of range and snipe (this may need to be a missile weapon vs upscaled opponents) 3. Close, immobilise the weapon and attack (less applicable to upscaled or heavily armoured opponents unless you can swarm them with numbers)

Not quite the point, but this does to soem extent illustrate why a longsword is a pretty nifty self defense carry. The additional mass and the possibility of using two hands bridge the gap to bigger two handed weapons by a bit, while the weapon still can, more or less be conveniently carried on the side.

This is good advice, I learned all this through trial and error fighting pole-ax fighters in LARP. Left out the fact that it is much harder to use larger weapons at ranges shorter than their overall length. So if I'm chest to chest with a pole-ax fighter I'll be able to use my dagger to end them far better than they can use their pole-ax to defend themselves

And as Adam pointed out, it's "in" the knee, not "to" the knee like most people seem to remember it. Edit: Though further research (reading a random comment) suggests there might've been one guard who actually did say "to" the knee.

my advice would be to just run. odds are, just because something is big does not mean they are slow. However, hearts still gotta pump. so moving as fast as a normal sized human an orc probably will tire out way faster to keep up. So ranged weapons, or tire them out.

I always move into the opponent's strike so they don't have the room to maneuver with their big heavy weapon but I do with my short sword. I step into their strike with a parry to force their weapon in the opposite direction my strike is going to hit. I use the momentum of a spin while immediately grabbing the arm on the side of my pending strike to pull them in the direction I just came from to throw them off balance while putting myself either directly behind them or the rear oblique. My strike hits their back if it's just a game, otherwise I'm hitting the back of their legs and up to their arm. I'm making it sound more complicated than it is. It's just step in, parry, grab, pull, spin and slash. All in one movement. I used to be a part of a full contact medieval fighting sport called Dagorhir. It was a ton of fun and I miss it greatly.

Though if my adventurer/warrior was fighting a warhammer fantasy/warhammer 40k type of orc/creature, who has longer arms and are built like a gorilla, then how would you be able to grapple their weapon? They would clearly be able to swat you aside with ease, or grapple the adventurers arm/weapon, mayby even tear it of. Plus they are also fairly fast and have good reaction time. How would you deal with that kind of opponent?

I'd also add staying away from an opponent is great if your plan is to buy time or wait for help. However if you've gotta take them out yourself, meaning no help is coming and there's no environmental factors that could do it for you, you have to close the gap as quickly as you can. In this scenario, they out-range you by nature of your weaponry, so staying where they can potentially hit you and you can't hit them is a super bad idea. The longer the fight goes on, the more chances they have at landing a hit, the less likely you are to survive the encounter. Unless your plan is to tire them out and wait for an opening when they're slow and out of breath. But still.

If there is no time limit and I can dodge the creature fine enought, my logic says to fight defensive until it wears of. A gigant creature should have less endurace because it has a bigger body to move, so it should wear of pretty fast.

Which means that even if you're in armor he's able to kill you with his bare hands. Best choice against an opponent like that is an even longer weapon (like a long spear) or ranged weapons.
