How to Feel Satisfied After Eating - Therapist Answers

NEVER FEELING SATISFIED WHEN YOU EAT? MENTAL HEALTH THERAPIST ANSWERS
#psychologyofeating #overeating #eatingpsychology
Do you feel like no matter how much you eat it never feels like enough? Maybe a lack of satisfaction is driving your overeating or binge eating. If you suspect this may be you, this video addresses 5 reasons why you may be struggling to feel satiated after eating and what you can do about it.
Are Your Beliefs Making You Hungry Video mentioned at 00:07:25 • Are Your Beliefs Makin...
SATED Mnemonic
S - Shoulds: Are you eating what you want or what you think you should want?
A - Amount of energy being consumed. Is it enough overall? Are you moving in and out of dieting?
T - Timings. How chaotic is your eating schedule? Having structure and eating regularly can increase satiation
E - Expectations. Looking at what you are anticipating and consider how this may be helping or hindering
D - Distractions: Are you always distracted when you eat? Can you become a bit more present?

I am terrified of eating carbs because my binge foods consist mostly of sweets. I can literally feel myself getting bigger when I consume breads, pastas, etc. You mentioned that feeling of “getting bigger” in the video. That was the first time I have heard that others think/feel the same way. You videos are great! Thank you!

Same here. I’ve just binge eat like a maniac all from candy to chocolate and chips. It feels like I haven’t eaten anything 😂 but my face is swollen and so is my stomach, I’ve gotten bigger. I hate this so much and it’s always carbs and sweets I binge eat

Scientifically that makes sense because carbs trigger insulin, which is the storage hormone, and that includes storing water, which makes me bigger. Also bad oils and other ingredients trigger inflammation, part of which also increases the body size. So between both of these factors it makes sense that we actually ARE bigger, as we feel.

You just got me out of a binge!! Been binging for just over a week now since my nan died. Thanks so much!! Just accepting that i dont feel satisfied enabled me to stop trying to eat until satisfaction when already uncomfortably full. You're a star! X

LOL, I see what you did there....S.A.T.E.D! Brilliant and pretty cute too. Once again you brought me back to a peaceful place around food. Gentle reminders are always welcomed. Since stumbling onto you and your videos, one of the very first things that I heard you say, is/was one thing you've used yourself. It's to say that "I can eat ANYTHING I want", (and I added) when I'm hungry. If I'm not hungry just now, I can have that thing when I am. It's been so freeing! No shame, no "bad" foods. That's your first one here "Shoulds". Then it seems that for me all the other's in your mnemonic have fallen into place. (more or less) I do a lot of self talk over food. I find what I've learned through you has been just amazing. I am a work in progress, and I'm just fine with that. Thank you Sarah.

I always feel so greedy. When I was younger I was frightened by the thought of being hungry. If my meal wasn't enough and I didn't know when I would get more, it could make me feel emotional.

Food scarcity (even just perception of) can create so much fear around not enough. You’re not greedy. I don’t believe anyone who struggles with this is greedy. For various reasons are appetite may feel or get disregulated for all kinds of reasons. I did do a video called Am I Just Greedy? You may have seen it but I’ll grab the link in case not ❤️

I can feel the same way sometimes. It's a panicked feeling. Especially when I used to plan a diet or even say the word diet. That meant certain hunger and cravings and I was off on another binge or long term overeating.

Probably in part because of the disconnection that I have with my body/mind/spirit. Thank you again I'll be more councious about SATED. ✌🏽💗🛸

Thanks for the video Sarah. For me I also often eat my supper in front of the television, telly however I make a point of really enjoy my meal and the process of feeding myself and the making of the meal as well. I try to take time and enjoy every bite. I find eating now is more about feeding my body and less about feeding whatever ( mindless) urges I have. When I come to the meal feeling hungry it's just so much more enjoyable. In fact I am now trying to enjoy everything in my day more b/c as we get older I see how the time is slipping away and I don't want to be somebody that's wasting my days, not even one day, worrying about what I ate. I have been a binge eater since I was 14 and now I'm mid 50s so trust me, it's been a journey and it's, as you say, never going to go away it's just how we manage our feelings and our beliefs. Anyways it's a work in progress and somehow it's working for me. Using your various methods has worked wonders. Thanks again and PS I Love the acronyms helps the information to stick !

Perfect timing to get this video in my recommendation list. Just came home from eating out, seriously contemplating to get a chip and a familysize tub of tiramisu, for there is still this unrest of not feeling satiated, which I rarely am because I am so familiar with the feeling of being stuffed to the brim and calling that "satisfied". Mr Creosote comes to mind! ✌️

I appreciated the comment about the satisfaction. I think I had the "expectation" that all food, snacks, and meals should be amazing and tasty and exactly what I want AND that that would be enough. That if I did it correctly, then I wouldn't ever want more than my body wants. But sometimes it just isn't and I will keep craving more and more until bed. I've started asking myself, how will my belly feel in the morning if I keep eating? because "am I hungry" "do I want more" "what am I craving" etc Qs are always yes, more, yep, uh huh! lol! But some part of me at least can tell that my body won't feel good later. That body voice is super quiet, meek, and uncertain, but it's there and I'm starting to hear her! :) And now she knows it's ok if my mind isn't satisfied b/c the goal isn't every meal, every snack, every day. It's almost like satisfaction or pleasure from eating had become a rule and your comment let me know it's okay if it's not 100% of my eating experiences. :)

Thanks for the suggestion. I’m always open to ideas. I’m a bit reluctant to cover this on a video though as it feels like something that is very individualised and is too nuanced a subject for KZread. It crosses the boundaries into medical advice and while I could do a disclaimer, I still have a sense of ethical responsibility in terms of how my words could be interpreted differently from person to person. I tend to point people towards two Instagram accounts for that kind of information - @glucosegoddness and @prediabetes.nutrition. They talk about managing blood sugar from a non-diet perspective and have more credibility in this arena than I do

I would also add that intense appetite can also be a sign of a clinical depression/ a sign of hormonal imbalance in neurotransmitters like dopamine/serotonin and a sign of emotional dis-regulation. From my experience I do better when I eat protein at least with lunch and breakfast and bigger meals around noon

For those who are struggling to feel that satisfaction, they may find themselves overeating/bingeing and STILL not feeling satisfied, which can be incredibly distressing.
